Yeah I'm surprised everyone is misreading resolution scaling with resolution hacks, you won't actually see more it will just appear better on larger screens.
I am strictly against allowing actual resolution hacks as bigger monitors etc. will confer an advantage then, which is stupid. Resolution hacks can be used for OBSing or casting where they have a useful and not unfair role to play.
Custom hotkeys I'm on the fence about, generally I'm against it, but as there are already country variations for hotkeys, I don't think it's a huge issue. I just think it would be much easier to monitor for hacks if there is no alterations to default than if there are millions of different ones.
@Mods I'm assuming that you will still be able to play regular game interface games in addition to Auto-Matchmaking? It would be annoying if you're only playing against the same 10 players over and over because they're the closest to your 'region' and never get to play the koreans or others. Imo this would defeat the purpose of bringing koreans to the server

These features have their place when observing, but not when playing.
What would you call this by the way? Is a resolution change always concomitant with a bigger overview? Or is it because we don't change the sprites that this would be a necessary consequence? In other words, if we were to update sprites and thus create more pixels we could have a higher resolution without having a bigger view in game? I think one major problem would be that you could not just use bigger/higher resolution sprites. It's not just bitmaps stretched out over a more or less arbitrary area as in your typical 3D game but the game actually uses pixels as a native unit for measuring unit positions. So you'd probably at least need a completely new rendering engine to make it work. It would also be interesting to get an estimate on how long it would actually take to remake some ten thousand sprites from scratch.

To your knowledge are any of the changes you are making going to compromise anything used in UMS mapping? At the moment it's completely melee focused (TvB and UMS game types don't even work yet ^^), but this is only true until we make the core features work. A proper UMS system is something that we talked about early in the project and we realize it has potential to become a big part of our server. That's why we're definitely planning on implementing a feature-full UMS system where it is easy to play UMS games, find new UMS maps and perhaps even use matchmaking to play them, if there are enough users active that would make matchmaking worthwhile. As far as the changes, we hope to make only the good ones, that help UMS community. For example, Neive is one of the people that is helping us on the project and we hope to down the line implement his awesome Teippi project directly into the ShieldBattery, which removes the sprite limitations of the game; something that could be very useful to the UMS mapping community. Thanks that's really great to hear. A lot of times TL-based projects leave UMS out in the cold so its nice to be included. Looking forward to this.

Actually, they're planning to make us have custom hotkeys but not resolution hacks.

wow, good news for all bw players! long life bw!!!!!!!

Custom Hotkeys should be allowed. I have a keyboard with which I can rebind all keys and create macros without software drivers (all build into the hardware of the keyboard so it's impossible to detect).
With products like this on the market everyone should have the same chance by allowing custom keyboard layouts. Not only those who can affort expensive 150€ keyboards.
BTW: I already costumized my layout for years because I have the german BW version and I switched the related game files to the english version. Besides: Not being able to change the layout is something that was pretty much unacceptable in games since the mid 90s.

UMS matchmaking is a dream come true.
Btw if you do UMS matchmaking, there should be one version of a map only in order to reduce matchmaking time

well, if they allow custom hotkeys and open source it then i guess the koreans will just make their own server with the software for actual competitive starcraft. honestly, if msl and osl didn't allow custom hotkeys or any version other than english, it kinda blows my mind that people think it's a good idea... custom hotkeys should be considered the same as maphacks considering the potential advantage that they can give
edit software... not wear..

This better not be some belated April Fool's joke. My heart is fragile. How can something this awesome be real?

The sprites were actually made in a 3D program, so if the original models still exist they could be re-rendered in a higher resolution.

Lets go launch the beta go go go

Thx for the all programming work! GJ! I really wonder how the latency(ping) will be managed

how would custom hotkeys be unfair? unlike HD mods, which would favor those with a higher screen resolution, everyone has an equal capability to modify their hotkeys, and they can choose what to change.

Wait is this that Birdie project that I've been saying for 4 years that it ain't happening?

No. Tec's been working on this for a lot longer than Birdie, and it's completely separate.

This makes a lot more sense, I also appreciate that they waited until they had most of the work done before announcing!
I'll totally try this server out, no question about it, playing on ICCup can be a bit of a hassle, I just hope it gets an active player base.
My concern is the playerbase, I wish there was a way to advertise this server and reach people who used to play and would be interested in something like this, but it's a hard feet to accomplish. I think the project is amazing, I just don't know how many players it can pull in.
Has the team discussed how to reach more players?

Personally I do not mind about being able to customise hotkeys. People who has been playing BW won't want to change anyway. BW is extremely hard for new-comers so hopefully this owuld help them give them a little bit of a headstart.
