News 1: Proleague will most likely have less than 5 games in a week

It is most likely that proleague will no longer be 5 days a week.

Representatives of 11 teams excluding ACE, KeSPA, OnGameNet, and MBCGame met on the 3rd and had a debate about the format of 09-10 proleague.

It was found that every person who attended agreed on changing the 5 days a week schedule for proleague. This decision is not final, but it is most likely that it will happen.

e-Sports fans always supported reducing proleague schedules for the players. Players lost time to prepare for the individual leagues. People complained that having so many matches lowered the hype, and the balance between Starleagues and Proleague were broken.

OGN and MBC are also having hard time scheduling their Starleagues due to so many proleague matches. It looks like 09-10 season will be changed to place more emphasis on the Starleagues. The decision is awaiting approval by the board of the 11 teams and the council of strategy (I don't know how else to translate that group).

News 2: Proleague will most likely not have 5 rounds
[image loading]

In the same meeting of e-Sports related people mentioned in the previous article, most people agreed on removing the 5 rounds system. Instead they agreed on having first half and second half of the season as they did between 2005-2007, with a few changes.

Each half of the season will have two rounds, one with the normal proleague style, and one with the Winner's League format. There will NOT be a finals between the winning team of the first half and the winning team of the second half, meaning this 09-10 season will have 2 winners if this format is approved.

Since there will be less days of proleague, they agreed on having best 4 out of 7 for regular proleague matches as well.

This is also pending approval by the board/council.

News 3: MORE POSTSEASON GAMES!

Decided the same way as the two previous articles, they decided to keep the current postseason format, with a minor change.

They will still have the top 6 teams in the regular season battle it out for the finals, but the matches will be Best 2 out of 3 Matches. Each match will be best 4 of 7, same as they were last season. This is to remove the "Super-ace" format that was debated.

However, they decided to have only 1 match (Bo7) for the finals because a lot of e-sports fans wanted it that way.

They're also thinking about giving an advantage to the teams that advanced in higher ranking by allowing the higher-ranked team decide whether the 1st and the 3rd match will be Proleague or Winner's League format.

Again, this is pending approval by Board/Council.

News 4: Required to send out all races?

In the debate mentioned 3 times already, they are still undecided about the race requirements.

Some proposed ones are:
1. Requiring 2 of every race (Remember it's bo7)
2. Only allowing 3 of each race
3. Requiring teams to even out the races they send out for each map
4. No requirements

The entry methods were also discussed, and it was decided to be kept the same way it was last season.

It is still pending approval.

I know that all of this is pending approval, but I'd put my money on that it will all get passed because it was done in a meeting where all parties were actively involved.

UPDATE: Proleague All-Stars and Ultimate Proleague Championship Finals to be held on same day!

To make the really really long article short, KeSPA decided to hold UPC finals on September 26th from 1PM KST, and then hold Proleague All-Stars on the same day from 5PM KST.

eStro, STX, KT, and MBC are currently in the Ro4 for UPC, and the poll for All-Stars is still going on. (http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=101139)

UPDATE:

THE BOSS SAYS NO!

Basically, everything got denied except the P.O.

1. There will be 5 matches a week
2. It will be 5 rounds with round 3 Winner's league (Bo5 for rounds 1,2,4,5)
3. P.O. has changed to 3 Ro7 matches.
4. Still debating about the Race Requirements.

I hope they cancel Wednesdays. It's the most logical of the matches to be axed because it's always played during the middle of the day so hardly anyone can attend it. As long as the weekends remain untouched I don't really care. It'd suck a bit if Monday-Tuesday matches we broadcast before I get off work (4:30pm) but I don't usually cover weekday events so I'm not too fussed. I agree with evening out the races used as well. It will hopefully lead to more variety in match ups and seeing more of players who don't usually get a chance to play.

There's so much to digest and so little certainty to this I don't know how to feel about it all, but in the end I doubt I'll have any major objections to it all. Thank god the Playoffs will probably Best 2 out of 3 though, the system they had for the last playoffs was just stupid beyond all belief.

Oh, and big thumbs up to more Winner's League style matches, that was a major hit and they need more of it.

How about they just make some balanced maps so teams aren't constantly sending out the same races on certain maps. A team shouldn't be punished because they have alot of depth in a certain race.

No requirements IMO. I would rather see each team have their "signature race combinations". As before, entry method shouldn't be changed (coaches are given the maps for the week and they pick players for the map with no knowledge of who will the others send)

Pretty much all good changes all around, just hoping they don't go with the 2 of each race required or we'll have to watch 2 failzergs everytime skt plays instead of 1.

...and absolutely no depth in another race. I think being punished because you literally have no one of a certain race who can play decently is fair enough.

The team leagues should rewards teams who might not have the best players, but the ones who have the best average standard. If superstars (looking at Jaedong especially) want to crush everyone by themselves, leave that to the individual leagues.

I liked being able to see a new game every day.. but if its better for the players they should cut back on days :l

If its going to be a Bo7 battle, then they should just put a 1 per race required, since a Bo7 can still let you have 4 terrans sent out even w/ the race rule if a certain team wants it that way lol

I really really liked the 5 Round format, and hoped that they would expand upon that by incorporating 2v2 into Round 2 and 4. If they are going to have two rounds though, they should really have a Grand Finals, otherwise its going to be pretty lame just having two champions and not one Grand Champion.

Play-offs format should be kept the same, with replacing the Super Ace with a Bo3 Winners League style ACE instead of having a third game, makes it more fun that way and a little bit more "fair"

Looks like good stuff. Any word on which format round will come first? I'm a huge fan of Bo7 for everything though.

I liked last year's format a ton, but it seems weirder to me that the season is <1month from starting and they haven't decided on a format yet?? Do we know when this is all going to get rolling yet?

This is the biggest news in quite a while.
Most changes are pretty good, my favourite being more winner's league.
Not too sure about the bo7 though.....sometimes for me the matches seem too dragged out. Even watching four games in a row seem to take too much time/gets boring for me sometimes...especially if they're long games.

edit: on second thought, bo7 would benefit the players though. it'll definitely give more chances for different players to come out and really allow the players that aren't the top 4 of team depth to have a chance. this seems a lot better for many teams.
I still think from a viewer's perspective bo7 might be too long

Hmm I liked last year's format fine too. But if the progamers are really overworked then I guess I understand.

I'd have thought GOM going down would have fixed the overworking thing though.

Also less seasons means less FPL seasons

With the best 3o5 format, I favored the requiring using one of each race.
With best 4o7, I'd rather just have no race limitations, since it wouldn't make a terribly huge difference.

Well by doing race balance, it will bring out the full team player's potential out. I hate seeing players that retires because they don't get any play time.

Sounds good for the most part but I'd make a few changes. For race requirements, I'd go for 1 of each race AND no more than 3 of a single race. The two of each race is crazy some teams don't even have 1 quality "insert race" let alone 2.

As for the winners league, I wonder if it'll be too much of an advantage/workload for one-man-teams like Flash and Jaedong. What if the winners could only win a max of two games. Could be a bit more strategic for coaches to figure out the right two map matchups.

l10f, awesome job. Thanks for keeping us up to date on this ^_^.

In respect to the changes, I approve all of them. The race requirements one is a bit tricky though... I'm not sure where I stand on that to make it fair. One of each is fine, but I'm not sure if I want anymore regulations than that.

I really like these changes, especially the change in the PL format. Hopefully games will be more interesting this way.

Also, l10f , you've been a hero these last few weeks, translating all of these articles. Thanks!

I think it would be neat if they kept the minimum one of each race requirement. Let a team send out 4/1/1 if they want to. This would have the effect of letting teams become race-specialist teams. I think it's neat how in football you can have teams that are known specifically for running or passing or defense. Why not have a format that allows a team to become known for their zerg play (for example) instead of having every lineup be extremely similar.

All they really need is a system to make sure mirrors aren't played so much. If they can fix the mirror problem, I will be happy with everything else.

bo7: good. rewards teams with more depth. matches might start earlier, though. or just end way later

race requirement: 2 of each sounds good. 3 max of one race is fine, too. no requirement is not so great

bo3 in playoffs: good. much better than this year's

bo7 for final match: not so good. more chance of fluke win, and not consistency

4 rounds only: good, since there's more winner's league. better if there were intro musics for some players. http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=99912

2 rounds of Winners League will be great... are they the same length as the rounds in the previous season?

Hopefully these changes will allow players to have more time to practice for each game, leading to a higher quality of games overall. I for one could never find the time to watch more than a small fraction of the total games played.

I suppose one trade off will be that we'll see less great matchups in the proleague, with games like Bisu vs Jaedong being rarer simply due to less matches.

This is awesome. We can have both a superstar tearing it up through the rival team and then depth fights.

Just one question: do both rounds have PO? Or are the POs played only after the second round?
I mean, if it is going to be @phase 1: Bo7/WinnersLeague @phase 2: Bo7/WinnersLeague, will be there POs for both phase 1 and 2 or just only after phase 2?

As long as teams have to send all 3 different races in the 3 first games, let each team show their "trademark race" style.

Anyways, a team relying too much on one race for the 4th to 7th game makes it very predictable for other teams to prepare in advance or even sniping.

I like the changes, but I hope the winners league format won't be too hard for the aces though. And I don't see the logic in having three bo7s for each round in the play offs, and then just one bo 7 for the finals...

I am against the race restriction because I think it hurts the teams enough to depend on just one race, the maps are never completely balanced anyway.

You guys who want 1 per race ... you do realize that that's essentially max 3 players per race with the added restriction of you can't play a 4-2-1 or 5-1-1 race distribution right?

3 per race max sounds good. 7 matches sounds fine. I don't like this hybrid league format ... stick to winner's league or the other format ... preferably the other.

Don't count 7 games just 6. Ace games don't count when race is choosed.

I'm in favor of cutting down the number of games played per week as well as making the whole season a bit shorter. Even though Proleague is still more important than the Starleages, I think there should be balance to maintain the "hype" and excitement in seeing a SC match.

I'm excited to see what this season holds!

On a team with Calm, Modesty and hero fighting for at maximum 2 roster spots, not often. On any other team, '3rd/4th best Zerg' would be an insult, though. July's spark is absolutely still there and I would expect to see him get playtime, maybe even in a key role if Protoss rebounds this season.

I think this good because the TEAMS made it, if KeSPA had done it it would be like 7 days proleague bo27 and 5 players of each race.

I think that 1 of each race and no more than 3 is the correct choice.

PD: i forgot to say that u get banned if you breath while playing and you should type "gg" with arial font and 27 lenght. Fuck KeSPA

I have had the impression some time now that July doesn't want too many games in proleague. One of the reasons he said that he liked STX when he moved there from SKT1 was that they let him prepare a lot for the individual leagues.

This is off topic though...

3 per race max sounds good. 7 matches sounds fine. I don't like this hybrid league format ... stick to winner's league or the other format ... preferably the other.

Yeah, we do realize. The point is exactly that. Make the teams send all 3 races in the first 3 games so race depth is taken into account, and once they have complied with that, they can showcase their race specialization if they do have one.

And you're trying to make a sarcastic joke because you think that makes you sound clever. Cute.

Too bad you don't actually understand what he means. Obviously teams aren't going to send the worst players on their team first. Ideas is saying they're going to send the worst players on the starting lineup first. Which makes perfect sense.

You could argue that July is behind Kal, Hwasin, great, and Calm on the depth chart. So they would send him out first and save the best for later.

Get the picture now clever boy?

The BO7 format will be awesome for teams like Oz and Stars basically forcing their lineup to get more TV experience and toughen up, which will also increase win hunger.

I think the future of this format is very good, and most changes (although not written in stone) looks very good.

The only thing I don't like here is the no final between the winner of R1 and R2. It feels inconclusive then with a split title.

Bo7 will be the death of Oz. 2 per race (if implemented) would hurt but not kill SKT.

Way too early prediction: CJ wins a round and the other round goes to SKT if there are no or light race restrictions, and KT FingerRolsterNs if there are.

Less games but Bo7 is awesome. Star players practice less for the PL, yet you still have simliar number of games total. Also allows for new stars to emerge, since in a Bo5 or WL it's rare to see more than one new face at a time(unless the team sucks). And for young kids, TV exposure is apparently very important in their development.

Hopefully no such "2 of each race" restrictions. Since that only encourages mirror matchups.

Some proposed ones are:
1. Requiring 2 of every race (Remember it's bo7)
2. Only allowing 3 of each race
3. Requiring teams to even out the races they send out for each map
4. No requirements

I really REALLY want #3 to be carried out. Dont get me wrong, i like the occasional mirror, but they seem to be really common lately. this could also help to counter one particular race dominating the season over all (latest was Z) and might even avoid another battle royale incident. Of course it may not work out like that but i'm really curious to see what happens.

Star players usually practice more for proleague. JD Always practises more for "team" matches then his individual league matches.

I find it ironic that all of the changes that were denied were those that were beneficial for the players.

I wonder if this was Shinhan Bank`s own decision or did KeSPA have anything to do with it as well?

Wow... this is beyond stupid now. The players and the coaches were crying out for an easier time for the players and they got nothing. I can understand the sponsors not wanting to decrease number of matches per week, fair enough. But seriously, year long season? That one should have gone and replaced with PL/WL =/

Pretty lame that the teams and players aren't dictating more of what they are actually doing. Sure, money talks, but none of this would exist without the teams and players...

I personally don't see why this is automatically a bad thing. It's the TEAM league. If certain teams actually know this *cough*KTOZ*cough*, then no one would ever raise a fuss.

Maybe it's just me following Samsung. Because regardless of how a player's performing or how the team's doing, Samsung players ALWAYS get time off. And almost always when they're stacked with SL obligations. Stork gets days off. Jangbi gets days off. And sometimes they barely practice. Great plays a lot, but he has no SL obligations. While this may not be good for the record(and indeed Khan pretty much sucked last year), at least I like how at least the players are not getting overworked.

In the end, it's not the format that's the problem. It's how coaches view winning over the well-being of their players.
