Hey hey -
So, not related to my mission to masters but I had a few ideas I wanted to fire out quickly... Slasher threw up a great article about esports on Gamespot.com, one of the larger gaming review sites. The Gamespot.com community poured a fair bit of hate onto esports in general and I just wanted to toss out my support for Slasher and my thoughts.
Take a look at the article- http://www.gamespot.com/features/the-state-of-esports-2012-6350990/
and show him your support in this thread:

I noticed a theme in negative comments and I just wanted to type quickly type up my thoughts, as I’m passionate about esports First off, most of the people (in a gaming community no less) looking down on esports and posting silly comments would watch pro poker players on tv...
And if you're willing to do that then it's just a mental semantics game, in fact even if your not willing to watch poker it’s really just the same game. It’s the: ‘This is something new and I don’t understand it and I will look down on it based on 20 year old stereotypes and my general dislike of things new’ game... (Please stay away grammar police)
Grr it's not a sport - is figure skating? curling? is skateboarding? is chess? Pick whatever activity you personally aren't engaged with and it's easy to look down on it. Get over it. You can argue back and forth about it the word 'sport' but really doesn’t matter… someone wins, someone loses, some people care about it. If you have to call it a game do so it doesn't hurt anyone, move on.
Grr they have no lives - actually most do have lives because gaming is their job, not an addiction. I think you have to be a certain type of jaded to look down on someone following their true passion (sorry your dreams were crushed man). Yes, some may play games 12 hours a day but anyone near the top in the world at anything has to over commit compared to the norm... it's how you become the best in the world, doesn't mean they are not living healthy lives.
Grr That game is a horrible game and shouldn't be played - games are supported by their fans, if there was no one watching it, it wouldn't be play on stage in front of lots of people... pick the game you like and move on, just like watching the Olympics, we pick our events and move on.
Grr I am a Gamer and anyone not playing games THE WAY I DO IS WRONG ... Is there really a need to respond to this... open your minds just a little, you already game, take your defensive walls downs, there is clearly more than one way to have fun.
Really, this is part of the growth of anything new. We have to get over the mob mentalities that keep the status quo and push back against anything new - once you've gained enough traction the SAME people will be dumping just as much hate against anyone that looks down eports.
Keep gaming.

They aren't sports. They are esports.
Figure skating is a sport, League of Legends is an esport.
Curling is a sport, Starcraft 2 is an esport.
Figure skating will never be an esport, League of Legends will never be a sport, the square peg will never fit in the round hole. Deal w/ it

I noticed this as well and was surprised at how many negative comments where there.
|
Gamers =/ esports fan. I would say that that is surprising but I've seen it a ton in the past so...
Probably some kind of "oh, pardon me but I HAVE A LIFE and only play for fun from times to times" elitist attitude.

I don't understand how they can be so negative about something that they do as a hobby. People play sports for a hobby, people play games as a hobby. Some people play pool for a job, some people play games. Why do they not realise sports=/=esports

This pisses me off to no end. Gamers call us elitist assholes and then they point to console players, most of them time I just say those kids you hear on halo or cod are usually NOT THE COMPETITIVE GAMERS.
Also the big thing I hear is, "I play the game for fun". WELL SIR ITS FUCKING FUN FOR US. Urgh its just so annoying because i have many non "gamer" friends who LOVE the idea of esports or are more open to it. Then you have our gamer kind who fucking hate it? Where does it even make sense...

If the round hole is large enough, the square peg will fit.

This piece has a lot of information but none of the paragraphs flow and the punctuation is awful. Many of the points could have been tightened up as well. If you can overlook that, then it's an accurate assessment of the esports scene. At least I think it is accurate.

I find it funny how the idiots making negative comments about having no life are reading stuff on a site called "gamespot". Of course, I'm not really quite sure we need hypocritical lunkheads like them in our community, anyways. Do we really want people with an IQ of around 70 posting on TL?

Most people don't really think that video games require athleticism in the way that (almost every popular) sport does, but they're reacting to how people accept sports as perfectly normal and esports as deviant. Do people grasp at straws trying to equate sports with esports? Sure. But it's not like they're completely unjustified.

As long as Call of Duty is an MLG game, Esports will never make progress towards being recognized in US.
It was a good article, and doesn't deserve the hate, but as long as their is no differentiation between games, Esports is an inaccurate term. Unless of course, you do consider COD an Esport, which I'm perfectly fine with.
Honestly though, Slasher should talk about the "bigger Esports" scene that is in Korea. There are several professional Brood War gamers that have a $300,000+ USD equivalent yearly contract. As long as Brood War lives, it's proof that Esports is here to stay.
