Whenever i jump on TL i see some thread to which i think i can contribute. I start reading and think "This is it, i can post something, finally i advance from the random live reports i once did and meaningless one liners in LR threads to somebody who has written something smart on TL."
Then something happens though. I start to think, big mistake if you are me and wnat to post. I suddenly get flashbacks of the automated ban list and bad posts. Like a vietnam vet, i start to stare straight ahead and zone out.
In this twilight zone, i feel like Moses wading through the red sea, trying to take my people to their sacred land. Searching for that one truth to post, that might do something good in this world and either enlighten or entertain somebody. Finally after years of living of mana and air i reach mount sinai and a voice from the sky tells me:
"Dude what you wrote there makes no sense and you are just repeating what the other people said. You don't need to post this. Come back when you have something to contribute."
So i leave, zone back into my real self and delete everything i had written.
One day, i will have something good to post, and if i do, you will all realize it happened.

I know this fear, but I finally just started to say, fuck it, post anyway. =)

you actually sound like a cool guy.

I feel like I should have an expert opinion here. - It'd be funnier if I had just hit post right then and let that be. But surprisingly despite the quantity of posts I make I still care every time I post. Sometimes they're good. Sometimes they're bad. I have warnings and I have stars.
Don't let posting fear turn you away from being a proposter. edit- sigh but do hit preview before post -_-; I put a space between jolt and ]. Real men type their own link code thingies.

I think its best to start small. Maybe make one observation, that you know is rock solid and hasn't been contributed yet. And then after that you'll feel more at ease about posting. Good luck...posting gives me anxiety too sometimes, unless I say something completely innocuous . Aah, those are the best posts. Small, personal opinions. No risk
|
I know how you feel. I can definitely say that I have nearly as many posts that I have typed and simply erased without posting than I do actual posts. I have a warning for posting in the wrong thread, a temp ban for being an idiot (which I completely deserved), and another warning for something likely just as dumb. Fear of getting banned isn't there though. All you have to do is not be stupid and/or a jerk to people and you'll be fine. Although posting with a somewhat clean history is fine and dandy, I still would like to be able to contribute something, not just throw words around that very few if anyone actually sees.

Well, we all make our own unique personalities on the forums. Just let loose and find out what happens! It's what I used to do on WoW forums, but now with 1 ID I try to make posting tighter
|
I do this all the time. I lurk mostly but whenever I try to type a reply I'll notice other peoples comments and just feel like I'm not going to contribute anything to the discussion and just erase. I don't really have any ban fear like you (I used to), but I'd rather speak my mind and get red text for it than alter it to something that isn't my true opinion.
|
I regret posting a lot of time when no one responses to my posts. I feel like no one liked it and I didn't contribute well enough. It makes me sad and I cry myself to sleep until I wake up in fear of being banned for bad posting in the middle of the night and then scene my roomie is asleep I watch ponies until my roomie wakes up or I can finally get back to sleep.
so don't post everyone. It will ruin your life. Your family will disown you and you will never know happyness again.
Edit: My feelings are hurt. my youtube is ponies.

I've deleted 2000 word blogs that i've written because I realised how terrible they were.
Feels bad man.

United States335 Posts
I'd say at least 70% of the time I look at a thread and consider making a post, I decide the post either doesn't contribute anything or has already been said and don't post it (about 25% of the time I reach the same conclusion and post anyways, kind of like this time haha). As a result I remain a lowly zergling, recently upgraded from the even lowlier drone, but I also screen a lot of useless posts.
I think that innocuous but short posts that don't add anything of obvious substance are sometimes appropriate, because they are a way of participating in the community. For example posts saying thanks or making some kind of positive response in news posts or other good threads and posts in LR threads individually seem insignificant, but are in my opinion very much worth posting. After all, without any of those sorts of posts LR threads and news posts would be depressingly barren.
I think a certain amount of self-censoring is a good thing. Considering you have over 1000 posts and have been here less than a year, I don't think you need to worry too much that you're overdoing it. Because making worthless posts is frowned upon at TL (an extremely rigorous policy by general internet standards) and the frequency of bans and warnings can be intimidating, I'm sure some people who mainly lurk do have interesting contributions they decide against making, which is a shame. Maybe someone reading this thread right now is about to decide against making an interesting post o_O

Maybe TL needs an upvote function like Digg and Reddit for comments? That way you can contribute without posting.

Occasionally i'll write up a response to a thread and then just abandon the idea of actually posting it. For instance when I see a lot of ignorant ideas being thrown around or when I get the urge to correct one individual among a list of many coherent posters i'll just exit the tab and move along. Sometimes it's not worth posting just to explain, "hey there are actually a lot more factors than what you guys have repeated X number of times over". Or to attempt to explain to an individual why their logic/statements are completely idiotic. Far and away the more common occurence of my typing out a response that goes unposted on TL is when someone says something irrelevant to the threads topic that is just utterly misinformed or generalized that I get the urge to correct their thinking for them. In that sense sometimes its almost therapeutic and a good stretch of the brain muscles; but some of the shit I come up with would just distract from the thread subject. Other times I just dont care enough or feel too lazy to express a more complicated thought I have and I don't feel the thought is 100% necessary for the health of the discussion.

I feel like the ability to actually put a lot of work in and just delete something is something that really separates good and bad posters, if you do that to something that clearly wouldn't get warned or banned but you just didn't like it shows that you're not just putting the work in to get a high post count or something but actually want to make the discussion the best you can.

TL intentionally does not have this feature, as they say it is unnecessary on a well-moderated forum. People have also been warned for asking for such things haha.

Being completed reasonable and having legitimate points that can't be refuted? That sure sounds like Team liquid.

I'm not sure about the details, but I think they also left that feature out because they felt it would hurt the forum if anything.

How could they leave a feature out when TL started way before both of those?
