LOL! I'm too from new jersey, do they know of this place?
But in all seriousness, one of my closest friends is indian and his parents are super strict/borderline overboard. Is this common in the culture?
YES,YES THEY ARE!!! The parents that moved to the US(NJ lol) are super strict, they treat their children really strictly because they don't want their time and more importantly money be wasted. My aunt and her family live in Nj(no surprise) and they treat their kids like slead dogs.
but, they also make the best aunts and uncles,They get you almost anything you want if you ask them before coming to India for visits...Free stuff FTW.
Some indians, one a Tamil speaker, the other from the North expressed some strong feelings about how Hindhuism is getting babaric now (a part of the cycles) with this Thaipusam stuff going on.
Is it just these few people?
Or .. is this not the topic of discussion for you?

following Hinduism isn't barbaric, most of the festivals and rituals are harmless and interesting, but people go crazy in the name of hinduism.I had to take to take my grandmother(well she still goes to the temple because of her sister) to the Temple near my house and she asked me to make a donation to the temple and I go to the donation box and try to put my money in with my left hand(i'm a lefty) and this priest is like "YOU SHOULD ONLY USE YOUR RIGHT HAND TO GIVE MONEY!!!",and I said "Do you want the money or not?",and hes like "NO TAKE YOUR TAINTED MONEY AND BEGONE!!",my grandmom was confused but she eventually found me at the front gate.

Retarded, unless a 2 year old sings the song. The song is like 8 years old.
I have this vision that Indian society is heavily separated into castes... is this true at some degree? how do you feel about it? if this is still true, where do you fit? how you relate to others, etc?
well the Melting of Himalayas and therefore the flooding of the most north indian rivers and the islands in the south being submerged, summer are getting longer, drought.Ya its bad.
India is far more fortunate. Many factors are responsible for relatively less negative impact on Indian economy. The slow pace of financial reforms taking place in India, cautious approach towards permitting foreign investments in Indian business sectors, numerous bureaucratic hurdles and regulatory constraints have turned out to be advantageous for India. India has always been criticized for its slow speed in economic growth but in hindsight it’s that very turtle speed has proved to be a blessing in disguise.
Indian financial system has very little exposure to foreign assets and their derivative products and that’s the prime reason India won’t be as adversely affected as other major countries. Revival of world economy will take a long time. Though, India will be affected in certain aspects like, low investments by foreign companies. Many FIIs (financial institutional investors) are heavily selling their holdings in numerous Indian companies and that is reflecting in gloom and doom scenario in stock exchange. Apart, companies, mainly IT and ITES companies whose prime business target is USA are bound to suffer. Also, textile companies will find themselves with low top line and bottom-line growth in their balance sheets because of less demand from foreign countries and consequently less revenue from exports.
Why do the parents keep fucking around having 8 children and them starve them to DEATH would be a better question.

Why is their population exploding? Is it religious doctrine that prevents the usage of contraception, does having lots of kids improve their social standing or is it the 'poverty pension plan' method of having tons of kids so they've got more people to take care of them when they're older?

Also, what's the deal with the caste system?
No,it's sort of religious and a lot of them have this mentality that more the children the more money they can make, and the illiterates that they are forget that they need to also feed them.they refuse to send their children to school too.recently though the government and NGOs have been working on fighting child illitracy,oh did I forget to metion bill gates there?
The caste system is dying...and I don't know much other than that you cannot marry any woman from any caste other than your own.

They definitely do in Tamil Nadu atleast. But the traditional Indian male and female often feel that a condom is something unnatural to the normal process and much rather prefer calendar method as a mode of contraception... The only place they are really used are in the Red Light Areas where it is necessary for protection.
