If it's OK I'm gonna take this one. Engineering is one of the two, yes TWO choices that us Indians have. It's either become a doctor or be an engineer. My dad would always talk about how when he grew up in India, every time he came home from college (he was taking computer science, Is a comp programmer) his parents would still be disappointed that he had not become an engineer.

Also, are cities and towns usually have a huge majority of Vishnavites and Shivites or is it pretty balanced?
Vishnavites and Shivites are not really different in a speaking manner, but visually you can notice the difference.there isn't much differennce other than the fact that they have different festivals,(shavaratri(shivites),navaratri(vishnavites) for example). In cities its pretty balanced in towns they tend to skew a bit,but not by much.if you take a bunch of towns together it balances itself out.

Tell us about eve-teasing laws. Tell us about how very little can be accomplished without bribes. Tell us about the dowry your wife's family paid you to 'take' her. Tell us how it's a requirement for every movie to have lots of singing/dancing but the singing is dubbed. Tell us how fucking tasty tikka masala is. Tell us about how the caste system is still very prevelent.

Oh I almost forgot about how many people are run over in Mumbai(Bombay) daily in the commute to work. Yes, people are just run over by busses and everything keeps moving. There is so much overpopulation it's unimaginable.
Just imagine you're HANGING off of the bus to get to work because it's that crowded... the room for you is on the outside of the bus... and that's acceptable. Then, when you hit a bump and fall off you're just run over and your body isn't picked up until later in the day. :S

We have LOTS of indian restaurants in Cincinnati. I do not know why. Around the University of Cincinnati you can find atleast 8 restaurants within a couple miles of campus. In one of the northern suburbs there is a southern indian(vegetarian) buffet restaurant that some Indians travel hundreds of miles to visit. It's funny because you will see 8 dude packed into a 1996 Honda Accord pull up/leave. They serve dosa for free with the buffet and have excellent masala chai.

2)Yes, It is sad that very little can be accomplished without bribes in india, corruption is rampant from the lowest to the highest levels. but u cannot blame them as they are paid so little they have no choice. it also help because goverment employees cannot be fired due to certain laws because india is not a capitalist state, it is semi socialist system so the public servants sometimes forget who the servant is and who the public is :D
3)Dowry was originally given as a means for the husband to take care of their daughter in case of financial emergency or as a a backup in bad times so their daughter would be safe. it has been twisted and manipulated by greedy new generation people and is being abused by even the richest people just 2 exploit people. Much of it is gone in the educated society but even some educated people seem 2 be backward enough to follow it.
4)Yes, Singing is an integral part of bollywood (the indian hollywood) movies !
5) tikka masala, butter chicken, chicken tandoori ! everytime is awesome!
6) Caste system is slowly dissappearing in the cities these days, i havent seem much of it except maybe in the lower strata of society (i hate saying the last 4 words) but in villages it seems 2 be rampant, but thanks to social workers and education, people are realising the caste system was dead 200 years ago...thank the british for bringing it back again ! :@
7) people dont only die under buses, they also get crushed under trains because they are in such a hurry to get 2 work + the overbridges are so packed that people literally cross the railway tracks running and obviously results in , you know what! it is rumoured that the busy stations in mumbai have rooms where body parts collected everyday of the track are kept for the relatives and friends of the deceased may identify their loved ones and claim the body, or whats left of it. but knowing mumbai most of them nobody cares about so they are just disposed of. (i dont know how, probably burnt)

My wife really wants to visit India some day so I have some questions about visiting.
Where would you recommend a tourist to go on there first trip to India? What are some experiences and foods that we shouldn't miss? Is there anything you recommend we avoid? Are there any common faux pas that tourists make that we should be wary of doing?

So I'm a tall white guy, majoring in Computer Engineering, and I'm graduating in May. I've been considering looking for work in India, because I think Indian girls are cute (yeah that's my main criteria on whether or not I would move to a country).
Do you think an Indian family will let me date one of their daughters without getting married immediately? Do you think they would let us get married at all?
How's the sanitation in India? I'd probably be living in the city but my mother (who is a bit racist I must admit) has told me some horror stories about unclean water/food/toilets in an attempt to dissuade me from going to India.
Would I be the victim of any sort of social discrimination because I am white? Would there be any privileges denied me?
What is the Indian view of atheism?
How much of Indian food contains milk? I'm lactose intolerant so this could be a problem for me.

If you're a white guy in CS looking for some asian/south asian womens just move to san jose. All the benefits of living in the US with ample opportunities for a job in CS plus a ton of asian/south asians. Not sure what proportion of those are young/unmarried though...

well for you first time it has to be Goa(MUST),Mumbai(note:you might want to stop at Aurangabad),Jaipur(MUST),Delhi. All these places have a lot of foreginers visiting so you don't have worry about any faux pas.
EAT EVERYTHING YOU CAN!Indian food is extermemly beautiful and exotic, don't judge it by its looks.I suggest you train your tongue for spices.
Avoid beggers,if they come at you don't make eye contact and walk away no matter how bad their condition may seem.
