i'm amazed at how terrible TL advice has gotten, I understand this isn't a mecca for relationship advice but come on, is anyone even thinking? HERP DERP SAY WRONG NUMBER HURRRR
if this is a legit thread and you said that you told her how you feel, then good for you, thank god you did that and didn't listen to some of the shitty advice here, grats.

Yeah the advice is pretty bad. A lot of us nerds don't have complete competence when it comes to dealing with the awkwardness with girls, regardless of how good we think we are or how old we are.
I'm being a bit of a hypocrite for saying this but I've settled myself down to the point where I'm having trouble getting that innocent "in love" charm when a pretty nice girl comes by. So dealing and avoiding awkwardness is my strong point =D.
Telling her the truth was the best thing you could have done. Especially if you told her the whole entire truth. It makes you look like a real honest down to earth no bullshit guy, girls like that. If you have confidence to boot, even better. What girls don't like are egotistical or shy generally awkward timid guys (losers in otherwords)- telling her it was a joke, or that a friend did it, gets you started down that path.
