Before I get to the awkwardness, I would like to share some background information. I am a sophomore in college. Over this summer I hung out with this girl, I liked her a lot and made a move at the end of the summer. She said that she only wanted to be friends. I still liked her, but I was cool with it.
Now for the fun part. You know how 13 year old girls on tv will do weird stuff like write the name of the boy they like in their spiral or call them and hang up before it starts ringing? Well I tried something along that same line. I typed out a text message that said nothing except "Youre beautiful. I love you" with her name in the address bar. I end up clumsily sending the text and I start furiously hammering the cancel button. Initially, I wasn't worried because canceled texts normally don't send. However, about 15 seconds later I get a text message from her containing only a '?'
OOOOOH FUUUUCK. My face was white. I tried to send another text message for damage control, but my hands were shaking so typing was hard. I explained that I sent the text message on accident and said that I was only being dramatic when I used the word 'love.'
She said not to worry about it because it was an accident, that it wasn't a big deal. It might not be, but I feel absolutely retarded.\

Join a gym and get yourself a body that girls will find irresistible, read — read books — so that you'll have something to say to girls (the best way to make girls think you're interesting is to actually be interesting), and get out of the house and do shit — political shit, sporty shit, arty shit — so that you'll meet different kinds of girls in different kinds of settings and become comfortable talking with them.
Some more orders: get a decent haircut and use deodorant and floss your teeth and take regular showers and wear clean clothes. Go online and read about birth control and STIs, and learn enough about female anatomy that you'll be able to find a clitoris in the dark. Masturbate in moderation — no more than ten times a day — and vary your masturbatory routine. I can't emphasize this last point enough. A vagina does not feel like a clenched fist, HUTB, nor does a mouth, an anus, titty-fucking, dry-humping, or e-stim. I think a girl did this to my facebook wall once. I said it was ok and scolded her in a joking manner to not do it again. Don't really think about the occasion too much anymore. She was kinda cute but I think she probably loved some other guys. And I didn't love her back. No regrets.

nice. i did the exact same thing once. However the girl already knew, and it wasnt THAT awkward. I was trying to text a friend named Alex(also a girl,) about the girl Ally. They are 1 apart in my phone book. oops. Played damage control, and then went to visit her at work to blow it over. it worked.

I did something like this once. I got really drunk one night and called one of my friends who just happened to be a girl I was in love with. Her boyfriend answered, he yelled at me, I yelled back at him, then the next morning, I was texting one of my friends and I said something like "I blacked out right after this happened, but I called that cunt Hillary and her boyfriend answered and we got into it." and I was so absent-minded, that I highlighted 'Hillary' when I went to 'Add Contacts' for who to send the text to.
She received it, she replied with a "?" as well, I never answered it, haven't seen or heard from her since and this was at least three years ago

Yeah the advice is pretty bad. A lot of us nerds don't have complete competence when it comes to dealing with the awkwardness with girls, regardless of how good we think we are or how old we are.
I'm being a bit of a hypocrite for saying this but I've settled myself down to the point where I'm having trouble getting that innocent "in love" charm when a pretty nice girl comes by. So dealing and avoiding awkwardness is my strong point =D.
Telling her the truth was the best thing you could have done. Especially if you told her the whole entire truth. It makes you look like a real honest down to earth no bullshit guy, girls like that. If you have confidence to boot, even better. What girls don't like are egotistical or shy generally awkward timid guys (losers in otherwords)- telling her it was a joke, or that a friend did it, gets you started down that path.
