Archaic Battle system, same rehashed pokemon, ugly sound, stupid grindan, etc etc.
I remember it like yesterday, I was in Korea and my friend gave me a copy of Pokemon Blue. It was in Japanese so I had no fucking idea what it said, but being a kid that I was I just had alot of fun with it.
My very very first starter was a Squirtle. I remember choosing a squirtle over a Charmander because all my damn friends had charmanders and I wanted to stick out a little more. And the fact that Wartortle looked so fucking badass.
I wish my Squirtle was this cool
After couple years, I heard news of this 'new' version of pokemon. I was shocked to hear there were over a 100 MORE POKEMANZ for me to catch! I was shocked and so excited for this new version. A crocodile water pokemon (crocodiles are still the coolest thing evar btw), a fucking badass flaming porcupine, and some retarded looking plant thing?! FUCK YEARH I needed this game bad. I had to buy it
After a long and painful wait, I finally got my hands on a copy of Pokemon Gold for the Game Boy Color. And let me tell you the second I turned it on I was fucking pumped as fuck.
Like every immature 5th grader I proceeded to name my character Analdick and started my epic journey to the lands of Johto, and holy shit was I impressed. Day and Night system, genders, fucking berries, more skills, CRAZY POKEMANGZ, badass rivals and so so so much more! And to top it all off, the ending you fight the one player you never dreamed of meeting; Fighting 'yourself' from Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow.
It was insane. I have never felt so alive at that age. Everything I did felt like a huge accomplishment. My life felt so complete! I just knew that this version of Pokemon will always be the best in the series.
So anyways, the nostalgia factor for pokemon gold/silver is huge for me. As I downloaded bought Pokemon Heart Gold and started playing it, old memories from my past rushed through me and made me feel happy for a while now.
If you own a DS, go play this right now. If you loved Gold/Silver like me then this is your calling card back the Planet Nostalgia.
yeah I remember buying my Pokemon Silver used off Amazon. I didn't realize it at the time, but the cartridge I was playing was a pirated copy I just ignored the fact that the cartridge had no label and thought the fact that my 100+ hour save file suddenly erased was normal (I was up to ~225 on my Pokedex, I even managed to catch all the legendary dogs myself).
I've played a Pokemon in every iteration. Nothing matches the epic scale of Gold/Silver

but that would mean they would have to make a good game D:

and then they told me to take the 'train' to Kanto
My balls were on the ceiling man, for me it was the most epic thing ever
I just hate how I don't know any of the pokemon. I'm not going to figure out what pokemon are really good and what pokemon are really bad, I can't even remember the type charts anymore.

FUCK YEAH
going back to kanto, even though they fucked shit up like viridian forest, was pimp. i didnt like the music however
If I have one complaint about this game it would be the high random encounter rate
When you're on your bike on tall grass, it literally takes 3 steps for a pokemon to appear EVERY DAMN TIME. It's like they're forcing us to play the game without a bike

Pokemon fuck yeah! Yeah gold/silver was a pretty awesome jump from blue/red as far as everything but the pokemon went. Nothing can replace the first 151. I'm mad they made these for the ds and not gba

This game is good, I have platyed it and beaten it. Its sexy and all of the changes made (especially how much they focus on the touch screen) are awesome.
IE You can skip the intro by just tapping the touch screen, there is never a time where you MUST press start/a/b to proceed forward (which you had to do in platinum). You have AUTO-RUN, no more holding down the B button while running long distances You can move Pokemon in the boxes with TOUCH screen, I know what you're thinking tiny pokemon fat finges sounds like a beetch? It's not, it moves smoothly without w/o a touch 'tensil thingy. Gary is still a cheater, so you can fight the gym leaders again and they come back in their 70's, but gay fucking oak is level 80. What a douche. Lugia-Ho-oh are the biggest bitches to catch, even if its a STAGED fight it doesn't matter if you've drugged them so up theyd agree to do it with their legendary mothers. THEY WONT STAY IN THE FUCKING BALL.
Seriously though, awesome game, the minigames are sick too.

I preordered soul silver (mildly excited). I hope new graphics, extra content, and slight changes are enough to make it worthwhile.
I think he's talking about the first generation namely red blue and yellow. For me i have like 500 hours played on silver. I think I just might get this to rekindle the passion

I was responding to him calling later games "lame". RBY was in his quote, so I decided to add a "U" to talk about 3rd generation series.
pokemon is one of the reasons I have a ds. gf claimed heartgold so i'll be playing soulsilver =)
The RBY wild encounter battle music is the ringtone of my phone. People who don't know think its just another ringtone, people who do know have epic jaw dropping moments when they hear it.
I kinda fell off after RBY so this will be new to me lol

Heart Gold/Soul Silver come out in Aus in like 1.5 weeks and I am sooo pumped. I can completely relate to all the feelings of playing the original pokemon games, all my mates and I, who haven't played pokemon since then, are going to hit it up on release date, epicness will ensue!!!
Man this game brings back memories... I can't believe I actually woke up at 5 am just so I can get a haircut from one of those brothers in goldenrod city. This is on my spend-time-to-look-and-download list.
They should just make another game, max level 300, you start from Gen 1 -> 2 -> 3, etc. That would be such an epic game. Though it would probably require more than one cartridge.

The Worst part was how the Johto gyms and the elite 4 didnt go above level 50. The gyms alone in RBY were pushing 60~

Shit, back in the days when I had my Crystal version I put like... I want to say around 800 hours into it? And that's a very conservative estimate. I was on my way to completing the Pokedex and had trained about 2 full boxes of level 100s, and after catching everything in Crystal I started trading for stuff only findable in gold/silver and using the time machine. However, on my last Pokemon (Remoraid, I think), the person who I was trading with didn't inform me that he had hacked it before he traded it... and then it corrupted my file.
I never touched Crystal again
On March 14 2010 01:10 Murderotica wrote: Yellow is the best <3
This. (At least 1500+ hours logged with Yellow... so good for the long trips my parents used to go on.)
RBY and G/S/C were good. Anything after that started to get extremely bland for me. The pokemon lost their distinguishing characteristics the first two generations had and it just got old.
But holy balls was 1st and 2nd gen epic. I would still buy a new pokemon game in this day and age if it features real time battle...
Also Red is a bad ass, everything Ash wished he could have been.
Y'know I've always thought that's what the Pokemon Stadiums should've been. Like, instead of pressing the C-arrow buttons to select what attack to use, it's an FPS sort of thing and pressing the C button corresponds to shooting that attack. That would be badass.
Silver and Crystal were the shiznite, best music too. Gen III is just terribad in comparison, and time consuming (damned EVs...), never even tried Gen IV. But I don't own a DS, so it looks like I'll have to wait till DS becomes outdated and just download the ROM for SoulSilver and DS emulator off the interweb for a small fee of zero pesos.

fuck I remember waking up at 5 fucking AM to use the first hint of daylight playing that game battling that girl with a Milk Cow thingie FUCKING rollback attack imba stack LOL!!! Ninja hiding GB from mom, wowowowow that was some awesome times!!
I played the hell out of Red and Yellow. I bought Red/Blue at the same time, and could never convince myself to play Blue after I had put so many hours into Red, but as soon as I had my hands on Yellow, it's all I played. I would probably still play it every now and then, but I dropped my Yellow cartridge in the toilet when I was like 10.
I always named Gary ASSMONK.
I had Gold at one point, but for whatever reason I didn't get into it as much as I could the original games. Same with Fire Red. I have it, and have played a good deal through it (3-4 gyms), but just can't get myself to play it for more than 20-30 minutes whenever I boot it up.

SHit!!!
Whenever I was sick, it was a strict rule that I was essentially not allowed to do anything. I couldn't play video games, I couldn't go on the computer, I couldn't go outside, etc.. I was allowed to read, but the GBC was easy to hide, and the better choice. It was even better when I got an SP
I'd pretend to be sick (I was most of the time, but there were a few times I just didn't feel like going to school), cover myself from head to toe with blankets, turn the sound down on my SP, and go at it.
Three of my friends got HG/SS and are loving it. If you're into competitive battling, I think Platinum/Diamond/Pearl offers more in terms of easiness in training/breeding/etc.
Which means they're always asking to borrow my cartridge =.=
There is really nothing new to HG/SS if u played Pt/D/P, aside from pokemon u've alrdy seen b4. I don't think I'll end up buying it ^^

It's like asking why do people play Starcraft if they aren't worried about skill?
There's more to it than battling you know. That, and when those games came out there were no other generations to grade them by, so they were as awesome as it could get.
Plus, for some reason, I feel like they play out faster, even though they're ugly now.
But I definitely bought HG because Gen 2 was my favorite. It just felt amazing to play again! Especially after my mixed feelings about Gen 3 and 4. Plus they made Kanto more in depth this time around, so it's a more complete experience altogether.
I propose you all to take the HARDCORE Pokémon challenge.
THE RULES: 1) You may only attempt to catch the first pokemon you encounter in an area. If you fail to catch that particular pokemon, you may not attempt to catch anymore pokemon in that area.
2) If a pokemon faints, it cannot be used in combat again.
3) No buying items from the pokemart.
4) No trading (with friends or npcs).
5) It goes without saying, but no using save/loads after a particularly disastrous battle.

Have fun with saving antidotes, boys.
Nuzlocke has so many variations. This one is a little different than most I've seen too.
The original idea, I think, is just the first 2 rules, only able to catch the first Pokemon you see in any area and if one faints, it must be released.

Again, this is based solely off of hundreds of hours of Pokemon Crystal, but there are Growlithe in the grass that you can find directly between the Sudowoodo and Violet City. I'd always catch one there before even going for the Zephyr Badge.
Like a lot of you, Pokemon has a heavy nostalgia effect on me. I pretty much bought a GBA solely to play them. However, I believe my tolerance for grinding has disappeared with age, as I can no longer foresee myself playing through one of these games without cheating especially as I take a rather completionist attitude toward gaming.
I still got the battle BGM in my head, even after all these years. I remember everyone would bring their GBA or Color to school during my elementary years, all playing Pokemon(I had the Red Version). I lost interest after Silver or Crystal, though it was a great time killer.
My little brother recently purchase both SoulSilver and HeartGold(I dont know why he got both), he also got some a tiny Lugia? toy. I cant believe the massive amount of consumers still purchase it when its almost the same thing every time they release a new or remade version. D:
Hey uhhh I just got to Vermilion and apparently I'm supposed to meet Suicune but I didn't...? I met him already at the top of Cianwood and at Mt. Mortar...

Lol, you beat me. I only made it to the first gym before I realized that I was just repeating myself for the 99th time.
Nintendo has this awesome intellectual property that they refuse to ever innovate or expand upon, and instead just remake the same game for one and a half decade with scant differences between each game.
I have gold, and I've tried to play it, but the problem is that the memory device inside is all jacked up. Every time I save, it doesn't work, IDK why. I never really got to play it, but I liked what I did get to play, so this is a perfect reason to go buy this.
I agree they haven't expanded drastically, but there were some changes pretty significant to the metagame (I think, not a huge fan) like special/physical move division, new pokemon (duh), expanded movepool, etc.
Right now I play this thing to get a taste of competitive pokemon. From reading some boards, lot of people are quite into it.

I thought pokemon was basically rock paper scissors on steroids.
From what I've read, there is certain luck element (% chance burn, paralysis, LINEUP), but a good amount of strategy involved. You have to predict with evidence given, balance a lineup, and decide accordingly.
I'm wondering if there should be a bench system to add further depth into the metagame.
Competitive pokemon is awesome, I dunno how many people actually play the games competitively though. Most just use battle simulators to get perfect IVs/EVs etc. because IV/EV training in the actual games is a royal pain in the ass. But yeah once you get over "lulz pokemans" it's pretty interesting.

If you go to the IRL competitions or play online, they apparently have means of checking for doctoring. (edit: I'm unsure as to whether they have the same for online completitions)
There are people who obsessively breed for perfect IVs and train for EVs.
Different games have different breeding mechanics and IV transfer processes, making this process a whole lot more complex.
I was once one of these types, but I've since quit; I just battle on Shoddy Battle these days.
But Pokemon remains easily the most complex RPG; the metagame is astoundingly diverse.
