It fucked me up big time. It's haunting, exquisite, artistic; I had to make a post about it. Oh God, and the music! It gave the film so much life.
So the movie is the true story of a romance between a French girl and a Chinese man in 1929 French Indochina (Saigon). The girl (Marguerite Duras), went on to become a famed and celebrated writer in France. She wrote two books about this time in her life, one of which (L'amant, 1984) won the highest literary prize in France, the Prix Goncourt. The film, which Duras was heavily involved in producing, is based on this book.
Here are a couple of clips from the film:
If you decide to watch it, or are interested, please note that this is a "foreign" film (though the language spoken is English): don't expect a Hollywood plotline, or extensive character development. This film is a recollection of a someone's true past. It's more true to real life than it is to film notions, and is very much an "art" film.
Hopefully this blog causes someone to watch it who wouldn't have before. Enjoy!
