Honestly, i really just don't get how you think so highly of it, and don't see the levels of subtlety you do. I'm sure you'll roll your eyes and assume it's because i'm too thick, but honestly, it's just nothing i haven't seen before, done better, with better writing, characters, and humour. That said i haven't seen an episode of the past 3 seasons, and don't plan on doing so. So perhaps it's a very different show these days, but i doubt it

So perhaps it's a very different show these days, but i doubt it Honestly I don't know what the past few years have been like... I go mainly by the first 5 or so seasons. If you were really interested I could pick an episode I liked and point out all the reasons why it was so great, but the hilarity and cleverness will kinda get lost in the transliteration so I'm not sure if it will help. I'm certainly open to differences of opinion where you can say something like "eh I don't really like it all that much" but most of the opinions in this thread have been that it is pretty much terrible, and I am definitely banking on me being right much more than them being right (regardless of bullshittyness)

But i'll try anyways: People argue that Futurama has a plot, has a story arc, and that family guy doesn't blah blah. But when it boils down to it, these are comedy shows. Not dramas. It's not like family guy has incoherent babble and only random jokes or pop references (btw Futurama does the same shit to a lesser extent and fails miserably). There is generally a story in the episode, which is the basis for most of the jokes and such. The story may be basic and not relate to any other episode but who the fuck cares? Simpsons and many other shows use the same formula. The fact that you are watching comedy shows for great story arcs and clever plot lines is as retarded as watching the daily show for your news. So don't come in arguing that Futurama is a better show because it clearly isn't, and you Futurama guys even admit it. The other main point you Futurama fans have, is that FG has the same jokes recycled over and over and that they always do the flashback style random jokes. They have done this often but it's not the ONLY jokes in the show. There are hundreds? of jokes in the episode and you guys single out 1 style of gag and call the whole show bad? How bout if I do the same thing; "Futurama is lame, they always just do jokes about how dumb Fry is and cut him off or ignore him", or "Bender is a robot, they always make jokes about how much he's a stubborn robot", and you can pretty much do the same thing with every character in the show..That is neither clever, funny, or plot related btw. Oh, and guess what? They do this Fry is dumb joke like 10 times EVERY episode, at least. Comedy shows are comedy shows. If the show is not as funny as the other, then it's obviously not better. If you claim otherwise then you are basically saying the show is not a comedy show, and then if you compare it with something that is not comedy, it also loses. So I guess your more "intelligent, acquired taste" show is actually some kind of retarded hybrid that was cancelled and has succumb to making straight to DVD movies that also blow. Have fun watching those, but don't tell me how much better futurama is than any other show, because it is not.

all tv is repetitive, it's written to be that way. the intent of any show is to be consistent and believable, jokes derived from characterizations are always going to feel that way, you play to an audience's expectations, not confound them. if people prefer A style to B style, that's fine.

Wow I cant believe I agree with CharlieMurphy but especially this paragraph is so so damn true. And its even more ridiculous when you watch it from a south park point of view, I mean WHO THE FUCK watches south park because of the great plot and because they are so interested in the development of the story? yup, nobody.
