Actually, I've found Family Guy to be a great test of one's character, to find out if they'll turn out to be a complete twat later on.
Those who hate this show are usually religious, republican, a right wing crack pot, uneducated, gay haters, take being an adult WAY too seriously, hate liberals or democrats, uneducated, white trash or redneck, old fashioned, conservative, or just painfully stupid.
People who enjoy this show are usually educated, fun, intelligent, and live in reality.
FFS. Why do so many Family Guy lovers sound like this? It's absolutely insufferable. So many people defending a show that's LOLRANDOM and claiming they like it because they are intelligent. Yeah people who don't like it obviously don't get it because it's so deep (and lolrandom) and those people are dumb.
You know what else sucks? Are You Being Served. Some people praise it for being different, and British, and if you don't like it you don't get it, and British humor is superior and maybe you have to be smart to get it and blah blah blah. But it's terrible. What does this have to do with FG? Not a whole lot

edit: also most of the people who are accused of 'not getting it' just haven't given it enough of a chance or have the wrong attitude.

You must have missed the majority of the vintage-era Simpsons, because although the nature of the show was in stand-alone episodes, the singular pieces were very plot driven, and almost all the humor in a given episode was derived from the situations the characters found themselves in. Family Guy, on the other hand, is almost the exact opposite. The vast majority of the humor in the show is pop-culture reference, usually unrelated to the specific plot. While the show sometimes does fold in some clever bits, subtle parody and intelligent points, the crux of the formula is that overuse of arbitrary reference and non sequitur. What I don't understand is how people have convinced themselves that obscure references to Rex Harrison, Sandy Duncan, or musical theater are inherently funny or insightful. The real problem with Family Guy is that while it's occasionally wildly creative, that creativity seems to always manifest in the same narrow, constricting box.
The fact that you are watching comedy shows for great story arcs and clever plot lines is as retarded as watching the daily show for your news. So don't come in arguing that Futurama is a better show because it clearly isn't, and you Futurama guys even admit it.
This point of your post was especially baffling to me. You seem to be suggesting that good comedy not only doesn't have good plot lines, but that it shouldn't. The second sentence seems to be some kind of straw-man type shit, but it doesn't even make sense, so I can't respond to that. The constructed narrative and connected plots made the character development in Futurama really incredible.
The other main point you Futurama fans have, is that FG has the same jokes recycled over and over and that they always do the flashback style random jokes. They have done this often but it's not the ONLY jokes in the show. There are hundreds? of jokes in the episode and you guys single out 1 style of gag and call the whole show bad? How bout if I do the same thing; "Futurama is lame, they always just do jokes about how dumb Fry is and cut him off or ignore him", or "Bender is a robot, they always make jokes about how much he's a stubborn robot", and you can pretty much do the same thing with every character in the show..That is neither clever, funny, or plot related btw. Oh, and guess what? They do this Fry is dumb joke like 10 times EVERY episode, at least.
While the "remember when..." flashback scenes certainly aren't the only jokes in Family Guy, they're the most conspicuous example the specious humor in the show. Comparing it to the Fry/Bender v rest of the crew dynamic in Futurama is a bit of a fallacy. See, the repetition of something, alone, isn't necessarily a problem; mindless repetition is. Plenty of brilliant shows made their living with a repetitive callback/callforward style. The Fry/Bender jokes work because they connect an integral part of the character's being to the various stories. They don't serve to say "Hey, isn't Fry stupid?" as much as they do to maintain the fact that the character is stupid (albeit endearingly so), and those two things are different. Conversely, how many times have we seen Joe break or maim his legs at this point?
Comedy shows are comedy shows. If the show is not as funny as the other, then it's obviously not better. If you claim otherwise then you are basically saying the show is not a comedy show, and then if you compare it with something that is not comedy, it also loses. So I guess your more "intelligent, acquired taste" show is actually some kind of retarded hybrid that was cancelled and has succumb to making straight to DVD movies that also blow. Have fun watching those, but don't tell me how much better futurama is than any other show, because it is not.
First of all, "funny" is a subjective standard, and probably not the best rubric by which to judge all comedy shows. A show like The Office (UK) is brilliant, and loaded with dark humor, but it's not a show I'd be quick to describe as "funny". But, if we are to use that notion of "funny", Futurama would still win for me. Futurama is hilarious in such a casual, offhanded way that it's endlessly charming. There are lines that characters drop in conversation that, unless you know the show and the characters fairly well, seem like just standard dialogue. It's when you get into the show that you find all this woven humor, those hidden gems that make you crack up. Family Guy, on the flip side, is essentially a throw-away show, in the sense that I can watch an episode, maybe chuckle at some of the jokes, but eventually forget about it. Weaving dramatic elements or narrative into a comedy show doesn't make it a "retarded hybrid", it makes it richer entertainment in my opinion.
You make some point about Futurama being cancelled and making straight to DVD movies, a particularly odd insult coming from a Family Guy advocate, seeing as they took near mirror paths. After extensive fan support, Futurama is making a comeback, with a whole new season of episodes ordered by Comedy Central.

futurama was a great show i hope the new seasons are as good as all the old ones.i found family guy to be novelty humor in that i can watch a few episodes and find it really funny then get sick of it and the episodes are really hit or miss. futurama is just great and so many times more clever.
oh yeah the gay stewie jokes are so bad too. it's a shame because he used to be a good character

Simpsons had the best parodies, though that doesn't necessarily make it funniest. I can remember certain Simpsons episodes, but I never remember certain family guy episodes, just a few sketches.
What really grinds my gears is how Seth MacFarlane craps on everyone about not being funny when he's not the comedic genius he thinks he is anymore.
