Because honestly the music is very simple. It may sound good but that doesn't change the fact that usually you see 'geniuses' listening to more complex music.
At least that's the theory.

really? Wonder Girls? Yay lets make fun of this guy for liking hot women. i actually was making fun of his music tastes. i'm guess you didn't score 30/30 no that mensa test. lol Wonder Girls are really bad at singing, I won't lie. Can't blame me for liking k-pop especially since I'm Korean. I've lived there for most of my life too. It really doesn't bother me that you don't believe I got 30 on that test, but it bothers me that you'd make fun of k-pop ironically i didn't particularly doubt you getting 30 on the IQ test. I just don't understand kpop. sincerely, i apologize for barging in here and ruining your blog-thread. if you'd like me to edit/delete my posts i will gladly do so.
Why do you keep apologizing and then continue to do what you just apologized for? I find that intriguing.
Wow, I really want to go see my favorite Korean singers live, but I'm in Canada.

really? Wonder Girls? SNSD is better imo. What does that have to do with anything sorry, it's distasteful of me to charge into your blog and to make fun of you. I just truly don't understand the appeal of kpop. It's completely mind-baffling. When i was in junior high school it was annoying enough to see all the popular girls running around screaming about the Backstreet Boys and Spice Girls, but at least they were stupid blonde ditzes, so it didn't really get to me. To see someone with intelligence (or at least implied intelligence) admire/enjoy such shallow empty music is again, baffling. Those girls from my high school had an excuse - they didn't know any better. But with intelligent individuals i'm just left wondering. Shouldn't you be playing mozart or something?
Wow. Seriously? I wasn't going to post anything until what you said in your last sentence.
Shouldn't you be playing mozart or something?
Completely off-topic: Talk about buying into stereotypes. You know, I used (and still do, to some extent) to get the exact treatment that he is getting right now from you. People would always be baffled that I (salutorian at my high school and currently at a Top 10 university) enjoyed RnB or hip-hop and would be outright surprised that I don't listen to much classical music at all. And so I ask, well, why the hell not?
People are so intent these days on categorizing "intellectual" or "intelligent" people that they lose track of the fact that MANY people are in fact - hold your breath on this one - normal!. Who would've thought that the so-called smart people have their own preferences in music, as opposed to what people stereotype their preferences to be! They must not be who they say they are if they don't listen to what they're supposed to be. God forbid, if a supposed "intelligent individual" listens to music by the Spice Girls they should absolutely stop it right at this moment: they should KNOW better than to listen to such trash music!
On-topic: For one reason or another, it doesn't particularly seem like the Wonder Girls have been having too much fun on their North American tour, and I'm not sure their reception has been as good as they perhaps thought it would have been. It's pretty cool that you got to meet them in person though.

You're absolutely right. Everyone's taste is different.
And while i can't say i remotely understand the appeal of kpop (perhaps one of you could enlighten me?), i certainly shouldn't begrudge your listening to it.
I listen to a broad range of artists for a myriad of reasons:
Radiohead: for instrumentals, vocals, lyrics, and general musicality Coldplay: vocals, lyrics, musicality Madonna: to dance to Whitney Houston: because i love her voice Trance/House Music: cause it's the music to dance to Beatles: musicality Souljah Boy: cause he makes me laugh
I don't need to defend what i listen to anymore than you do. Feel free to tear it apart, i guess it's only fair.

Oh yay kpop related blog!
First, grats l10f for getting to see WG in person - and getting a few autographs! Seeing the celebrities IRL is a whole new fresh experience (I've seen a few IRL - and a member of SujuM is a high school friend of mine) and probably a pleasant one overall.
Being an SNSD fan, I am going to say outright that SNSD is better. xD but it doesn't mean if WG somehow shows up where I live, I'm not going to see them - being a fan of one group doesn't make you anti- for all other groups.
I think the reason JYP sent WG overseas is because he saw that with the massive uprise of more talented girl groups in the kpop scene (it was already getting tough for WG to compete against both SNSD and Kara, then now there's 2NE1, 4minute, Afterschool, Tiara, f(x), etc.). Not going to lie, and JYP probably knows it himself, WG is bottom 2 or 3 if a group was judged solely on live singing. Smart business move to get them out of Korea and market them somewhere else, and most of the news so far seems to indicate that WG had moderate success here - I'm happy for them.
For tastes in music - it's whatever you want! There are studies done that say listening to Mozart helps you study better, classical is good, blablabla, but then so what? I'd argue that listening to the music you like is much better for your /whatever purposes/ than any other generic "genius" music (i.e. fugues by Bach, which are structurally "perfect" with some exceptions <- arrr don't pick me on this, I haven't been analyzing music for years). I mean, not to be boastful or anything, but I consider myself a pretty intelligent human being (also happen to have an ARCT for piano performance - it's a music conservatory graduate degree) and I'm a huge fan of Asian pop (K/J/C) and also a huge Muse fan (yay Muse! their new album was sort of disappointing though).

lol at some people being musical snobs in this thread when their musical tastes don't go beyond the very tip of music as a whole.

sorry to get you so riled up.
But i guess to be honest, i think you should listen to classical music. There's incredible beauty and depth found in classical music, and while the taste may be an acquired one, i think it's worth acquiring. I'm not well-versed in classical music, and i'm certainly not trying to hold you up to 'unfair stereotypes' due your intelligence, hell, i haven't even graduated from high-school, so i'm certainly not an intellectual, nor am i qualified to give voice on such matters. But there is value in classical music, just as i think there is similar value found in RnB, hip-hop, and rap music.
I was not trying to create a dichotomy between classical music and everything else, but more trying to (albeit not hard enough, and completely failing to) express that i don't see what the attraction is in kpop. I was presumptuous in my implying that there was no value to be found, when i should have instead asked a fan to explain it to me. I did not appreciate classical music until a few of my friends introduced me to their favourite pieces, and why they were their favourites. The same can be said for my favourite band, Radiohead, who i absolutely despised until i was also encouraged to explore their music further. The same can be said for The Beatles, Pink Floyd, rap, and folk music, among others.
I like all kinds of music except for mainstream country (ie: i love folk music, but hate country), kpop, and teen-pop, pretty much. I just don't understand the appeal of those genres.
Enlighten me.

If you're not well versed in classical music yourself, then you have no right to tell people to listen to Mozart, and the very idea that you think more "intelligent" people listen to more complex music is laughably ignorant. The stuff you have listed yourself are things that the musical zeitgeist have absolutely no interest for when they look for serious music. I mean, you're being some kind of self-righteous snob when your musical tastes are stuff that true musical snobs would dismiss.
Musical taste and intelligence do not go hand in hand. Musical taste is subjective.

They really sold their single for $1? I'm sure they could have charged at least a little bit more and still made a profit. I really hope that was a promotional thing rather than a necessity. Sounded like you had a good time.

Why should we have to 'enlighten' you? Musical preference is personal and often inexplicable to those to whom it doesn't belong. I happen to be a long-time (five years plus.) fan of korean music. I listen to everything from indies acoustic to hip-hop because I enjoy the aural aesthetics of the Korean language and living in Korea it's become my 'domestic' musical nationality.
My favorite classical song happens to be Auf Dem Vasser Zu Singen by Schubert. The genres of Kpop and Classical are not mutually exclusive in the slightest. As people have already mentioned musicial taste is subjective and the property of the individual. If you don't enjoy pop music as a genre then there's not much point in us attempting to induct you into the Korean pop music scene, is there? If you are curious to listen to current releases (and even some older tracks.) then just visit the Kpop Discussion thread in the General forum.
(Damn, I said I wouldn't get involved, but I'm really very, very bored right now.)

I understand if you'd like to retaliate because i was not being very civil earlier in this thread, but could you elaborate on this?
I like every genre of music i've heard, with the exception of pop and mainstream country. You could argue that the rest of musical genres combined are only the 'tip' of music, while country and kpop provide the rest of it's depth, but i'm going to have to call bullshit.
I like death metal, rock, jazz, blues, folk, rap, r&b, hip hop, alternative, opera, classical, britpop, celtic, giddha and banghra, house, trance, techno, electronica, and i look forward to exploring the thousands of other genres the world has to offer.
i have no desire to belong to a group of music/classical music snobs. Nor have i ever voiced having belonged to such. This doesn't change the fact that i [currently] don't like kpop, nor do i understand the appeal of those who do.
for the 4th time in this thread: Enlighten me.
