I don't know if ads are different in other countries, they very well might be, but I'm sure some Canadians will understand me when I say OH MY GOD AIR WICK, SHUT UP!
It's weird to me that they have so few different ads for any particular streaming site. Obviously, people are mostly using justin.tv at the moment, and their demographics are completely ridiculous... I mean, especially for NASL, you would think they'd have ads that are related, but they don't. Here's most of the ads we've been seeing recently.
-Air Wick: Annoying ad, I can't imagine it convinces many people to buy that stuff. -Hands-free soap machine: "never touch a germy soap dispenser" ... Oh my god I'm about to wash my hands anyway! -An automatic air freshener that detects bad odors: Another stupid invention with overkill technology. And what Jtv seems to insist that we smell funny. -Razors for the ladies and Veet hair removal: strongly targets all 5 girls who watch SC2! -Various dishwashing products -French's mustard -Finish quantum -Resolve cleaning -Frank's red hot sauce: "I put that shit on everything" - fine, it's catchy the first few times.
Sure I buy some of these things but none of this targets us specifically - I guess perhaps it's all they've got. There have been a few gaming ads for me but, again.... OH MY GOD AIR WICK. STOP IT.
I'm mostly kidding, but yeah ^^

I used to go on about how annoying some ads were (like the fucking hotel ads during TSL), but then I just started using adblock for streams. Makes it so much more enjoyable.

recently, i get nothing but DUUUUUUUUUDE NO SEATBELTS??? .. and i'm not even in the US, our cops are not even called cops ^^

I want to kill the people who made the "I put that shit on everything" ad. You mute the ad and it plays nothing for 30 seconds (audio-wise) and then right at the end it ignores that the audio is muted and yells "I put that shit on everything" ... like wtf?

I think you need up update your addblock! I use it at home and never get any adds. I don't use it at work to give TL some add revenue.

i wouldn't mind any ads if they didn't have incredibly obnoxious audio. personally i watch most streams muted and just play music, but even when i have the stream muted the audio from the fucking advertisements plays (very very loudly). because of this i choose to adblock everything even though i might disable it for sc2 streams if it wasn't for the sound.

Sheth has been having problems with an ad of some random spanish people having sex.... He's actually stopped playing commercials until he thinks its safe again

Yeah, I think towards there is an even greater argument to be made about fixing the advertisement system all together. I think a lot of the advertising for Justin TV is non-specific as you rightly point out but I don't necessarily think it is because they don't care but rather because there are a lot less contingencies when it comes to the contracts. If JTV can sign bulk ads it will indeed bring down the value of the advertising space but it makes the sales much easier. That model has the potential to make more profit then trying to sell specific ad space because specific ad space while more valuable is harder to sell because often with online streaming it is to niche communities which may or may not have enough advertisers individually.
Also when it comes to the repetition in ads I think it just has to be due to the amount of ad space each company has and the fact that most broadcasts are much shorter than the NASL and thus have less repetition. Don't get me wrong I am not making excuses for why Justin.tv to make watching ads unbearable I am just saying that a lot of what is probably driving their business model is what is easy and most profitable for them. I think it might be good to start some push back and say 'Hey, I watch ads on streams both for the benefit of JTV and the streamer so I deserve some quality control' rather than just turning adblock on.
JTV has a system similar to youtube where they don't target ads which is often is aggrevating for the viewers and pointless for the companies. I think blip.tv has it right in the way they target ads because not only do the streamers and JTV make more money but the companies get actual return on their investment rather than annoying people during long broadcasts. Advertisements are never going to be fun for the viewers but at least they can be made tolerable and profitable for all.
All of this also needs to be put in the SC2 context of a lot of viewers with clear interests and easily definable demographics. I don't know how the SC2 community compares in viewers to other streams but it must at least be up there. Even just the case of the NASL with 15k+ viewers for 4 hours on 5 days of each week has to be a advertisers wet dream. I know there might be a lot of work in getting things started up but a more specific approach would seem to be beneficial even if it is just to gaming content as a whole. As a side note I just want to say that these are my impressions from what I have seen while watching JTV and that I don't have any intimate knowledge of their advertising department.
Personally I would like to see less abusive audio use from advertising, less repetition if possible, and targeted advertising.

Yeah I think you pretty much hit the nail on the head.
And the abusive audio use is especially annoying even though I didn't mention it. It's truly ridiculous that I can't touch the slider during ads. Come on.

I just wanted to make a post about this, but i am suffering the same problem, and it is getting really annoying. I have been working for a big social networking site a few years ago and back then the company cashed in royally on just any contract they got, just by the sheer number of subscribers they had.
And really, in Austria/German Region its the same: Air Wick That damn hands free Soap Machine thingy Finish Quantum - and various dishwashing and plenty other reagents that seem to emphasize the fact that they even remove all these filthy bacteria (or zerglings) that all SC2 players are plagued off.
All this makes me think that SC2 enthusiasts are nothing but filthy nerds that need the aid of corporate brainfucks to get cleaned up.
Seriously, the targeting is BAD. BAD from a recipient point of view, and bad from someone who was working in the industry. IF i would be paying justin, twitch or some company money for this i would be feeling robbed. Because it will turn up in close to 0 ROI.
