So the title isn't exactly indicative of my feelings towards the Master League, but rather the visualization of it.
Now, I will probably never get into the master league, but my feeling is that for those who do/are that the icon is kind of a visual let down (assuming they even care). I liked the use of the star (following military rank) but the rest of the layout seemed too foreign, so I went ahead and played around to see what it might feel like being more in tandem with the other leagues...
The result, well i'm not sure, clearly they doesn't really follow the design aesthetic other than the general layout, but I was curious to see it conform a little closer nonetheless. A note about the designs, the first (right) was for a more polished look whereas the second (left) the idea was for it to be more 'battle-worn' and tarnished.
Also, after looking at the icon more and more, I feel less antagonized by it (though the lower leagues still look horrendous).
[current icons as of patch 1.2 for reference]

I like your designs a lot better than the actual one, nice job. It would be cool to see all the icons with the tattered war look

Your icon is over 9000 times better than the current icon.

Don't worry they already said they're going to change up the icons making them look better depending on your division rank. When they announced Masterleague and Grand Masterleague the icons looked way better.

So you mean by where you are in your league, your icon will be different (e.g.100-67, 65-33, 32-1), like adding additional graphics the higher up you are? how did I miss that?
I definitely saw those when they announced the m&gm leagues but figured they were preliminary designs when they released them... though I'm wondering if they won't do another overhaul for when they add the GM league?

You made a beautiful icon.

Yea the reworked icons are on the way. I think they mentioned them during blizzcon.

How many levels of league will they eventually implement?
I may be completely uninformed on the topic, but would a ranking system like that which ICCUP uses be applicable on a large scale like this? Do the numbers still work when applied to that many people?
If you saw someone with a B+ or A on iccup, you instantly knew, "holy crap they're good at this game." Seems less so with everyone and their mother, (and myself, lol) getting into diamond or master's league with seemingly zero effort. Will GM league simply be the next hurdle to climb?

I have to admit that they do a good job of romanticising the different positions.
Haemonculus, I think with the iCCup ranks the reason B/A was so prestigious is that you literally had to win more than you lost just to keep gaining points... So those ranks were really hard to keep. Lets see... B rank vs B rank is 100 for a win, 100 for a loss. A rank vs A rank is 100 for a win, 140 for a loss (130 for a win if on MOTW).
So yeah, A rank is just insane on iCCup. Not to mention you had to build up all those points over a single season... You could just be placed into it for SC2.
I think the fact that you are so isolated from players who are better than you also makes the ladder easier... When climbing iCCup you will meet people who are on their way to the top who you have no chance against... That will cut against your win ratio a lot. People complain about this, but it really shows the separation of the best from the... not best. You get a sense of just how steamrolled you are against the greatest players.
That and the fact that SC2 popular strategy is not so difficult to execute for any seasoned BW player makes it difficult to legitimize the highest ranks.

They should give icons the tattered war look after players played a certain number of games... and give you a secret option to 'polish' them. Hey, blizzard loves putting in stupid stuff like this so why not? =p

It would be interesting if they had different icons (graphics only, same leagues) based on what your most played race was. The reason I thought this was because I feel the "tattered war" one (as many people are calling it) would really fit a Terran more than it would fit a Protoss/Zerg.
Probably would never happen, but just sayin.

I'm really enjoying OP's redesign. It's much more consistent with the other icons, which I guess is somewhat important for the OCD. Although the rest of SC2's visuals and designs are well polished, I'm surprised to see Blizzard stumbling around with the league icon designs. Hopefully, they'll eventually settle down on an idea that everyone can accept.

Just with B+?
Hell if I saw a B- I immediately thought DAMN that person is good.
I like the way the Iccup ranking system worked. Once you hit the B levels you absolutely had to win more than you lost or you wouldn't be getting any higher in rank.

Thanks everyone for the compliments!
I'm wondering in tandem with a single rank gradation, like iCCup or ELO, why blizz didn't go that route overtly, especially considering that military ranks tend to be small additions as you advance. Also, this kind of makes me want to fabricate a more streamlined visualization for the ranks, more akin to the ELO distribution.

i still don't understand why plat gets an eagle.

i still don't understand why plat gets an eagle. I'm guessing because Blizzard was kind of following army officer ranks whereas an eagle is a colonel, and the star would be a brigadier general, but everything gets completely skewed because they also tried to merge typical alloy nomenclature, and a diamond would be closer to first sergeant which is a lower rank than colonel. It's all really a jumble as to why plat. ended up that way, but that is my best guess.
