hi, I've got some questions about broodwar I hope someone can answer them
I'm running windows7 on my pc, 19'' desktop with 1440x900 resolution
1. Graphics, when I watch npnl.fedOr his stream, his colors are just normal when playing broodwar, mine aren't. Everytime I start the game everything is pink, and also when I'm ingame, if I move to the edge of the screen, it gives me strange pink colors :S It's also very hard to take ingame screenshots, but I hope you guys have any idea what I'm talking about. Does it perhaps help to deinstall windows7? Should I install vista instead, or perhaps windowsxp? Is directX causing this? It's very annoying, when I play bw, I just want to play it in normal colors, instead of this pink and lightblue coming up...
2. I like protoss the most, can someone tell me some standard hotkeys? I tryed putting nexus on 4 or 5 like in sc2, robo 5 stargate 6 but it doesn't work in scbw. I don't know if it's appropriate to ask for hotkeys on this site, if it isn't pls tell me and i will edit it.
3. Resolution, on my desktop(1440x900) the screen just completely widens everything, BUT on my laptop(1366x768) the game shows in 1024x768(with black bars at the side), even though I haven't done anything different at my laptop(same windows, same directx) does anyone know how I can have those black bars at the side at my desktop too? It looks much nicer when the screen isn't so spread out. Also I've tryed the ICCUP launcher, and tryed to play it in windowed mode, but the problem is that my mouse sensitivity stays normal as in any other game, EXCEPT for when I start the game, then suddenly it changes and goes much slower. Does anyone here play scbw in fullscreen, or is the windowed mode the standard?
|
1. win7 and bw have never gotten along (well it works for me), but menu colors are generally always fucked up, even when I used xp and vista. There are many threads about this, you could search, but basically one of the solutions was to stop explorer.exe. Also running in windowed mode.
2.I am not a protoss player, but you will only ever need 123 for units, because your race is for skilless chobos. jkjkjk, people often start the game with nexus as 8,9,or 0, and thats all i know for toss hotkeys.
3.playing in windowed mode sucks, but is often the solution to the color problems, on my monitor (1600x900), I changed some settings in starcraft.exe and I think thats what let me play with black bars, alternatively you can change your monitos aspect ratio. Windowed mode is not standard though.

To answer your first question, I think the weird colors has to do with Win 7. There's a workaround to it but it's not really worth it because I think it prevents you from alt-tabbing.
|
|
1. I think it's quite common to get weird coloring when opening the game from the ICCUP launcher (or after a lot of alt-tabbing), but it only affects the menus and when you start a game it gets normal.
2. I would recommend 7-0 for nexus, or maybe 8-0. 4 or 5 is bad since it's quite far from P. Some ppl prefer to use the F-keys instead, but I think as Protoss you can afford to hotkey your nexus's since they are not as hotkey-intensive as Terran, who have their scanners and bigger unit sizes. 5-7 would be the most natural for Gateways, Robotics and Stargates, but sometimes neither of them really needs a hotkey, it depends a lot on the matchup. I would not recommend playing PvZ without hotkeying both the Stargate and your Corsair fleet. In PvP it would be a good idea to hotkey all your Gateways and your Robotics because a short slip in your micro or macro can easily lose you the game in this matchup. So if you hotkey everything, you can focus on your micro, plus it gets easier to rally your reinforcements. And if the game ever gets past 2-base play, which it normally doesn't, you can just transition into your PvT hotkey setup.
3. I don't know the answer here, but I play in fullscreen, and I think most ppl do.

1. Best solution would definitely be reinstalling XP. If you don't have problem with that, everything will work smoothly, I guarantee you.
2. For hotkeys, you should generally use bigger numbers for Nexus (8,9,0), because they're close to letter 'P' which is to make Probes. For units, I personally use 1-2-3 and for Gateways 4-5-6.
3. There should be an option in your Video Card settings to show the black stripes in BW. I don't know where exactly. And for mouse sensitivity, I think you can change BW's mouse sensitivity in Chaoslauncher (ICCup launcher has integrated Chaoslauncher). Go to Starcraft tab in Iccup launcher, click Settings. And under mouse tab you can change sensitivity.
|
2. For hotkeys it is recommended to do what the posts above said, but in all honesty whatever works for you is what you should do. Trying a different hotkey setup takes a while to get used to, and may feel unnatural. I can tell you however, that you should be using all of your hotkeys, not just 1-7.

oh shit i didnt know about that fix lol
i use 8-0 for nexus, 1-4 for units and 5/6 for my gates, 7 for some higher-tech production buildings depending on where i placed them
i think there's a way to make it so theres no black bars but everything gets stretched, ill look for it and post if i find something

Protoss hotkeys are usually 8-0 for nexus, 4-7 for gateways, 1-3 for armies. Lategame, you use all the hotkeys for your army, stop probe production, and click gateways individually. You should probably have separate groups for each unit type. I usually put 12 zealots per control group and 7-8 goons per group(because you micro them more to kill tanks).
|
2. I've seen Bisu games and I've like his hotkey setup.
-Starting game: 3 for probe, 4 for nexus, 0 for nexus. That way you can spam between 3 and 4 to get your building probe and scouting probe, when you click 4 you see how far your probe has finished training, then click 0-P. ---- 5 for your first warp gate, 1 for zealot, 2 for dragoon.
Midgame: 0,9,8 for nexus. 5,6,7 for gateways. 1,2,3 for units. 4,5,6 for special units (reavers, dt). Start using F keys here for rally point and gateway structures.
Late game: 1,2,3,4,5 units. 5,6 for special units (observers, arbiters). F keys for gateway and rally points.
One thing to remember is dont be afraid to constantly change your hotkey group assignment. And dont be afraid to group 2 zealots in hotkey "1" and 1 zealot in hotkey "2" and some dragoons in hotkey "3" it lets you micro better.

wow thanks, that fix did help :D Now I dont have to remove windows 7 hehe Also I just played a guy and he said he used F2 for his gateway as hotkey, but how do i hotkey my gateway to F2? ctrl+F2 doesnt work it seems.
edit, and whats the deal with the F2 + easy rally points? if you have a building to a Fkey can you set the rally point of them all at once?

Good to hear it worked! About f-keys, what he meant was this: You can bind f2, f3 and f4 to a specific location on your minimap by pressing shift+f-key. When you then hit the f-key you bound your screen will return to that location. Others also use this on their expos in case of a harass drop (could be reaver harass) in which case you want to maynard all your probes to another mineral line to avoid economical damage.
edit, and whats the deal with the F2 + easy rally points? if you have a building to a Fkey can you set the rally point of them all at once? Yeah, you can also use the f-keys to rally gateways. Personally I'm not a fan of this method, but here goes: You you have an F-key on your gateways and you have an F-key on the play you want to rally your gateways. Let's say gates are on f2 and rally point is on f3. You then click f2, then click a gateway, then hit f3, then right-click the ground where you want it to rally to. You repeat this for all the gateways you want to rerally.

You can save screen positions to f2 f3 and f4 by holding down shift and one of those buttons. F2 starts out as your starting position automatically.
I believe that the general consensus is to set your bases to the f-keys so you can transfer your probes during harass quickly. So if someone drops a reaver in your natural you can press f3 to go there and select probes and then f2 to transfer them out of danger quickly.

If you don't use F-Keys to re-rally gates how do you re rally? I always use FKeys for gate re-really because its super fast and then after that I can return them to the expos.

back when I didn't use F keys to re-rally I did that and everytime I tried containing someone I'd lose 50 lings before realizing my rally point was in his natural T_T

Yeah I used to have that same problem, and it felt way to slow to have to actually scroll around the screen to get semi accurate rally points. Seems to me like it would be terribly slow and somewhat imprecise but I guess like everything else with practice you get used to it and fairly efficient.
