If you intentionally disrupt this server your actions will be reported to TL staff and action may be taken against your forum account. |
how long has the current world been running and how long do you anticipate staying with it? I played on this one ( http://foo1.shkn.ws/~djr/mc/gmap/ ) for a few months, but everyone on it migrated to another one for PvP (then promptly decided PvP wasn't so cool).
Basically, I like community but don't like having to chase it around and abandoning things all the time. I'd love to play on this one if there's some stability to it.
On the other hand, you have a good number of items banned, rather than banning the misuse of them. That's one thing I like about my old home. No blocks or abilities were off limits, but if someone griefed with them, it was logged and they were banned. I get though that it's a little more work to determine if usage was malicious, so easier to just ban outright.

The current world was generated when biomes arrived. iirc stable beta was serejais goal for the next reset.
|
thank you. will hold off until then at least in that case

I can't imagine "stable beta" being any less than several months from now.

The world will reset when beta starts.
As for banning items and stuff, well... I glanced at your world map for less than five seconds and noticed a giant penis. A few seconds more reveals a giant hole labeled as a vagina, "LOL" and other retarded words/phrases written all over the map, lava griefing, and too many eye-sore creations (such as giant pointless cubes, pillars, etc) to count.
Point being, most people that play this game (yes, even a lot of TLers) are pretty immature and irresponsible. It's a full time job trying to prevent people from doing stupid things, so rules cut down on that a lot. TNT can't be gotten legit anyway since there's not really a way to get gunpowder, so there's no reason not to ban it in case anyone hacks it in. Lava has been used countless times to grief here, so eventually it was outright disabled because we got tired of having to babysit everyone. Flint and Steel is, well... any server that DOESN'T ban it is just asking for trouble. Fire can spread across up to 7 blocks of air, so it's very easy to set your entire server ablaze. Not to mention portals don't work, and leaves drop from trees automatically. There's no legit reason for using fire, honestly. Last but not least, Fishing Rods are banned because they are glitchy and cause extra lag on the server. They also don't function anyway, so again there's no reason to allow them to be used since all they do is cause harm.
So, while I could easily just allow the items and spend hours a day combing through log files... it's much easier to just put a few limitations in place to prevent the issues from arising in the first place. You get used to not being able to use lava pretty quickly.
We have two communities here; a very tight-knit one of people who have put in a lot of effort on the server, and a larger but looser one of people who just play kinda casually. I can't speak for the casual players, but the core group has mostly been here from the start so you could easily connect with them and find a stable home.
Hop on and check it out for a bit. Can't hurt.

Hey Serejai - any idea if/when the server map will be updated? I know you were having some issues getting it to run, but the map that's up there now isn't really all that indicative of the world as it stands, and it would be great to get a better feel for where the big settlements are for building some useful offshoots from the current transit system.

Your server, you run it your way that's cool. So I'm not trying to get you to change your policies here, just want to address a couple things
On December 10 2010 01:21 Serejai wrote: As for banning items and stuff, well... I glanced at your world map for less than five seconds and noticed a giant penis That's not hard to do haha. Not unexpected or lamented. That's actually where all first timers were told to go to place a sign when they joined (shacknews for you). And I don't know of any lava griefing on that server. Any lava you see is meant to be there (like the bit by Bender. As dumb as it looks, the area owner put it there). And sure there are eyesores (the lava cube especially. The stone cube to the SW was at least going to be based on the Vincenzo Natali movie Cube). But am I to understand that the rules on your server go beyond the concrete (no lava, no fire) and extend to harder to define things, like no eyesores?
I think all the pixel art in the northeast is dumb, that's why I live in another corner of the map. Actually, as hard as it may be to believe, this server frowned on pixel art compared to some of the other shackservers. It just wasn't banned. At least giant dirt columns are less of an issue now that falling damage is in. Also: where's the giant hole labeled as a vag? I'm not familiar with that one (and the letters "vag" appear on none of the visible signs on that map, check the html source)
Flint and Steel is, well... any server that DOESN'T ban it is just asking for trouble. Fire can spread across up to 7 blocks of air, so it's very easy to set your entire server ablaze. The linked server hasn't. This was possible though with an active and involved admin / mod staff, who were willing to roll back discrete areas if an important building went up (and were willing to say too bad if a forest went up). The current server has several large forest fires going, which seem to add more character than problems
There's no legit reason for using fire, honestly. other than decoration, same as lava. The burning pyramid wouldn't be what it is without fire neither would my altar
Last but not least, Fishing Rods are banned because they are glitchy and cause extra lag on the server. They also don't function anyway Laggy I can't address, but they do function. Cast in water, bobber drops, pull in fish. Been doing it for a while from the deck of my galleon
So, while I could easily just allow the items and spend hours a day combing through log files... it's much easier to just put a few limitations in place It's not like the admins spent hours every day checking logs, grepping logs was only done when griefing was reported, which was infrequent. I think there were only 5 or so bans from 300+ players. Anyway, like I said, I have no problem with you running your server your way. I'm totally on board with it being easier It would just feel a little restrictive compared with where I came from, but that's my problem.

Hop on and check it out for a bit. Can't hurt. I can certainly do that, be a tourist at the least. Will PM as well for access, but MC name is the same as TL name. thanks to you and everyone who provides a server for this, or any game!

I somehow got interested in designing mazes, so I started building them, a bit northeast of spawn, right near gladiator and the jump challenge.
Right now there are 2, on top of each other. The bottom one is just a standard maze with a few one-directional doors, to make things more interesting (and to prevent solving it by hugging left or right wall). For some comfort you can jump up and see where you are and can make out your surroundings It can help you, but I don't think that it's a powerful method of solving it. Shouldn't be too hard to figure out anyway.
The glass maze is well, out of glass. That means you hardly see the path you can walk on, but always know exactly where you are in the maze. The glass maze has 2 levels, and the path to the end visits both a couple of times. It's a lot harder, but Mr.T told me that it's much more satisfying to beat, and he said that he pities the fool who doesn't try this maze. Hint: Take a look where the exit is from outside before starting, or you might miss it when inside the maze.
I have 1 more unique idea for another maze, which will be similar or harder than the glass maze, and if I have enough motivation, I will build the most insane maze, that no one will ever finish, combining one-directional doors, multiple levels with stairs and ladders, glass and solids, (maybe) dark areas and maybe a secret feature
You can also check out the maze I built in aquamentus, if you haven't yet.

The point being, the harder the line is on griefing, the more confident I am that I can build my 250x250x250 pokeball sphere out of primarily tree stumps and no one will burn the 60 hours of work to the ground in a matter of seconds.
I'm with serej, I can't see flint being allowed possibly being a good thing in a server like TL. If it were possible the item should be impossible to even hold, modded so that it's destroyed as soon as someone creates it.
Lava I'm a little more ambivalent of, definitely it can be used for greifing, but certainly it has aesthetic uses at the same time. Lava lighting has a cool and interesting effect on an area. Lava I kind of feel gets the shit end of the stick. I'd be nice to just make it not burn everything, and be allowed to use it again. It's basically just pretty water on this server otherwise, which I kind of like.

See, I would have banned about 100+ people just from glancing at that screenshot of those signs. I don't allow people to write stuff like that here :o
There is a hole on the map labeled "Someone's mom", which although indirect is still very clearly implying something. As for eyesores, well... let's just say that if you make a giant box for no reason, it's going to be removed. The idea is that everyone has their own interpretation of what looks good, so there are some places on the server that I personally think look like crap. However, they are functional and server a purpose. If you make random pillars that just go up into the air for no reason, or spam tunnels everywhere that have no purpose other than to spam tunnels everywhere... you're gonna be looking for a new server. A major part of this game is the environment, and destroying/griefing it for no reason is a bad thing. If you want to make a giant sphere, fine. But if you make it out of just cobblestone or something and it's floating over someone else's area... it's gonna be removed. If you place it away from other people and actually put some effort into it, such as making a design on it (such as making it look like a pokeball) then it's fine.
Pixel art is an example of something I personally hate, but that is acceptable because it looks good for what it is. We don't really have much, though. I think maybe 6 total? All clustered in one spot.
Flint and Steel deserves a reply all to itself. Here's the thing with Flint and Steel... aside from it being extremely dangerous and not very practical at all (your example is good, but there are implications to that which I will explain in a second), it's also extremely laggy for the server. I'm running a Quad Core Xeon with 8 Gigs of RAM and a single forest fire is enough to cause noticeable lag over time due to the memory leaks it causes having to constantly render. One of my old worlds was actually grinded to a complete stop over the course of about 3 days because of fire.
Now, about the practical uses. Let's say, as your example, we have a burning pyramid. It's extremely easy for a player to walk up to it, lay down a path of wood blocks, and transfer the fire to someone's nearby house or structure. It's actually happened on this server before.
Fishing Rods may have been improved some in recent patches, but I haven't seen any patch notes for them yet. The last patch that mentioned them, they were horribly buggy. They would only cast about 5% of the time, and when they did you couldn't loot the fish anyway. Every cast that didn't work properly would stay on the server, repeatedly trying to update the bobber's location. You couldn't notice the lag in-game, but I could see it while monitoring the server resources. Enough casts and you would eventually start to get some lag, though.
In closing, I have over 1k players that use this server, and about 20 bans. 14 of those 20 bans came from before I disabled lava/fire, and were all grief-related. So yeah, it's more restrictive but it cuts down on the work a LOT. Since banning items lag has been non-existent, griefing has been pretty much removed, and I actually have time to do things other than check logs, rollback areas, fight fires, and cleanup giant lava spills. It's a minor inconvenience for everyone on the server who would use lava/fire in a legit way, but it's a huge time saver for myself and other admins who can focus on improving the server instead of maintaining it.
That being said, I will say that when beta hits there are going to be very large changes, and more than likely lava will be allowed (it sorta is now... if you need some, admins can place it for you for decorative purposes).
Basically, a good rule of thumb is that if you'd get banned for doing something here on TL, you'll get banned for doing it on the server, too. For example, writing "fag" on a sign or building a penis. You wouldn't make a post here with "fag" as the body, and you wouldn't post a picture of a penis without expecting a ban.
Let me know if you have any suggestions/complaints, though.

The pokeball is acctually made out of stumps, not cobble. Someone put a HELL of alot of work into that...
[edit] Serej, please fix the whole in the ground in spawn. I've gotten stuck in it like 3 times
[edit2] Page 69 celebration! woo!

Time to get diggin...
Just posting an update on the Echoing Caves. The caves reached the previous target depth yesterday, and a new target has been set (the level of the notice board). So now we are digging to the plane 20 levels above bedrock, and the chance of finding gold while digging has increased alot.
Come join the project. Its getting closer to completion.

at least some guys on the team apparently are, yes. Well, i guess the chances of having an sc2 follower in a group of 6 geeks isn't too bad hehe

I do believe at least a couple of them use TL, too.
woodzykiler, what kind of network card do you have? If it's an Atheros, that's your issue.
You could also test something out in-game. See if you can run around without crashing. If you crash when you try to place blocks, it's your network card.

I'm going to get around to making that zerg hatchery eventualy. If anyone wants to help, they can PM me. i think we are going to need a lot of dirt.
