I love SC2.
9-10 years ago I played SC1 like crazy. I was a high-school student and had a lot of time on my hands, most of which I invested into playing games, especially Starcraft. I remember this period of my life as one of the most fun times I've ever had. Dreaming about SC, waking up thinking about SC, going to school thinking about SC, going home logging on to b.net or going to LAN with friends playing SC, going to sleep thinking about SC and being totally happy and content with doing just that.
There's only two games that had a comparable effect on me, Quake 3, and WoW, which used to be really fun in the beginning too (that didn't last very long though).
Over the years I stopped playing SC but still followed the scene thanks to Teamliquid, because SC as a spectator sport was really fun, too. Over the years things have gotten a little stale though. The game is still amazing but the games started to bore me, the recent trends in BW with all that macro style were just not that appealing to me anymore.
I tried a lot of games in between, 95% were total crap and 5% percent were fun while it lasted. But those games could never ever compare to something like SC or Q3.
But now we have SC2 and it almost feels like 10 years ago. Ah, I really wish I was 10 years younger and could play SC2 all day, go to LANs (or not lol) and just live and breathe the game like I could when I was younger. Unfortunately I don't have the time to do that anymore but still, it's so much fun to play this game, to try out new stuff, to win, to lose and to realize that youre now old and slow and that 16 year old kids own you left-handed with their right hand jerking off to Girls Generation. But that doesn't matter, losing is okay, the game is still fun. And then we have GSL which is really fun to watch. The last time I had so much fun watching live streams was when Savior (</3) played vs Bisu in the MSL finals. While watching you realize that many moves are sloppy, many strategies are not very refined, lots of mistakes are made - all those things make it great to watch in my opinion. The game is so new and I learn so much new stuff when watching these streams. It's just fun to be part of that, just like it was when SC1 was young and people learned the maynard slide or the Grrr.. strat to FE as P with cannons, which was then countered by 2 hatch hydra, which... and and and.
I really don't understand why so many people are so unhappy with the game. I agree on some points regarding b.net 2.0 being crappy as it is, but in my eyes, the game itself is almost perfect. Of course there's still stuff to be done, but that's to be expected and is not any different to SC1 or any other game. I'm actually totally amazed that I like the game this much, I would have never expected the game to be that good right from the start.
This post doesn't really serve any purpose. I just wanted to say that I really like the game and I appreciate Blizzard creating such a great game and I hope they will continue to improve it and I also hope that I'll have as much longtime fun with SC2 as I did with SC1.

Yeah SC2 is definitely underrated by a lot of people. I really swung around quite a bit in my opinion after playing on some SC1 ports with my friends. It really ends up feeling very Sc1-like, and macro games were much more commnon. I think the shitty map pool is really doing a lot to stifle interest in the melee part of the game.

Yes, in the end all the whiners play the game still.... Because it´s FUN

Given that it's so difficult to viably compete as my chosen race, it's becoming extremely dull and at this point I'm about to sell it. I don't see how you can possibly have any fun playing a game with this many issues. Sure they'll be resolved eventually, after I pay another $120 over the next 2 years to have them fixed. Seriously, this is encroaching on the worst gaming experience I've ever had.

I pretty much agree on all counts. Most of the people complaining about the game being dry or imbalanced, broken or whatever are new. If you played BW from the start or so, you notice that it's following pretty much the same path. The game we played in 1999 was different in 2002, and it was different in 2006. I'd imagine styles and shit will change in a year from now too.

I'm pretty sure you CANNOT sell SC2, the cd key is on your battle.net account.

What issues? So many that its unplayable? Weird, I'm not having the same issue.
I remember playing the beta, which was loads of fun. After the beta ended, waiting for retail seemed like forever. When I finally got my hands on it, I was pleased with the polish of the game, and like many people have said, how fun it is.

You make it like it's totally impossible to ever win with zerg... they're probalby in line for some slight improvements, but i'd hardly say that it's that difficult to compete when there are successful zergs.

Refreshing post to read.
Btw, you can GO TO LANS! Please do. LANS make any game (especially SCBW/SC2) about a billion times more fun. Even if you are the older guy you won't be alone in that regard. Please do yourself the favor and put yourself out there!
Ty for the cheery/kind words. Love seeing optimism with SC2 every once in awhile.

I love it too. SC2 ROCKS.

Nearly everything you described is the same for me, just that I lost touch with BW for a couple of years. You sum up my feelings perfectly. SC2 is such a great game (but god damn, Bnet 2.0, unbelievable that they could mess up like this) and there is so much to explore for the pros in the next couple of years. Real maps, refined strategies, expansions, patches.
It will be sweet, and I'll be watching the streams in my armchair as I'll be growing older, and let the young guys duke it out.
Great post.

I am sort of in the same boat for SC2. For BW I was around 14 when it came out so I wasn't allowed to go to any LAN events. Now that SC2 is out I have a job that basically doesn't allow me to travel far to LAN events. I live in a pretty bland gaming region of Canada so there is not much outlet for Local LAN events.
I might try travelling to some Calgary / Edmonton / Winnipeg (From this list of Cities you might be able to tell which area I am from) events though to get in on the TL.net meet ups and stuff. SC2 has been refreshing for me as well but it is now getting hard to balance it out between CIV V, and WoW(I know I know). =) It is only going to get better from here on out though.

I'm not gonna make this dude's blog thread into a QQ session. I'm simply stating my opinion as opposed to his.
EDIT: About selling, I'll change my information and sell it to someone I can trust, but don't necessarily like.

Well, I feel different.
10 years ago BW was fun, because I didn't care about balance. I played melee because I liked it, and when I got bored I played UMS. Same went for Warcraft 3.
To me, this game was supposed to be different. I wanted to play competitively, maybe not with the best for money, but I wanted to challenge people on equal footing. This game, that was hailed by everyone far and wide as being THE e-sports game, THE game developed for competitive play. I along with a lot of people, had huge expectations that were further hyped up by blizz themselves.
Now we have balance problems: ZvT being fucked over early game, balanced(?) late game. ZvP has even more problems. TvP is easy early game but hard late game. PvT is hard early game but easy late game.
Blizz's response to those problems that are plaguing the very players they developed this game in mind with, is a few changes that IMO (because it's yet to be proven) FURTHER skew that balance up. Sometimes, their reasoning makes you wonder if any of the devs ever got out of their placement matches, let alone bronze.
I enjoy playing Z/P. Do I REALLY need to be penalized, and be behind after the 15 food supply mark, only because my opponent is terran?! The maps do not vary in sizes. There is no variety. They never even cared enough to try out big maps the size of python. Blizzard developed this game with competitive gaming in mind, and later hyped it further down that road. They deserve all the shit they get for this kind of balance. The GSL is a mockery, not tournament due to their balance issues that they are having. They had 5-6 months of beta to deal with this shit. They claim to be in contact with top progamers and discuss balance, but they show absolutely no results. The balance was arguably better during beta, than it was last patch. They claimed this game would be e-sports friendly. They sure are moving at a snail's pace to make it friendly.

Yes SC2 has balance issues we all know... but to say it's encroaching on the worst gaming experience you've ever had? Wow.. what games have you been playing that are so awesome compared to SC2?? I mean I'm seriously getting sick of people blowing everything so out of proportion.. saying "how can you possibly have fun playing this game"... give me a break dude.. if you hate the game so much go play something else and stop making ridiculous posts like this..

Agree'd this is a VERY refreshing post. Thanks for posting it! While yes, the game has its issues, it is still INSANELY fun and addicting to play. Most of the posts here on TL are all doom/gloomy/ i hate my life and why is T OP. Some times, you can just play the game for fun and not to win. my 2 cents. Thanks for the contribution!

^fixed.
Honestly BroodWar, Quakelive, and CoD4 Promod are all pretty fantastical. They're just starting to show their age, and I'd really like something new to enjoy. Paying $120 over 18 months after my initial $60 purchase just to have something close to balance is incredibly frustrating. It's not even race specific really, as any drastic changes they make will result in one race being imba, then another, then another in a hopeless cycle. Throw in something as subtle yet amazingly important as map making and it's a recipe for one hell of a time out. Believe me, I'd love to love this game. Blizzard isn't making it easy and it's not totally their fault, it's a lengthy complex process. Although I'd love this game to be perfect it's going to take a long ass time to get anywhere near that. Maybe my expectations were high, but it's big let down to know you're going to have to wait so long for it to reach it's potential.

I feel like some bw players (especially the "old school" ones) for some reason feel the need to excuse themselves for playing sc2. For god's sake, would you just stop it already! I'm starting to think people have some misconception regarding why they actually play the game. You play a game because it's fun or thrilling. If you play the game with nothing but money and eSports on your mind, well, then you're wasting your fucking time. I would actually say the same thing for people jumping on the wagon for the craze of it. Remember that big does not necessarily mean it's good, small does not necessarily mean it's bad - and the other way around. Money competition in any sport should in my opinion always be a reaction to you enjoying the hell out of the game you play. I don't care what game you play, as long as you are enjoying youself. However, this community is for stupid reasons at war with itself. Personally, I believe it's because we're talking at cross purposes. It is totally nonsense to argue which game is better, while only considering why you like it. You have no reason to tell anybody that your game is better, nor do I have reason to force you to like some game that I play. You don't join some Quake community only to argue that that the starcraft universe is better unless you're a major douchebag or a troll. The reason why we're talking at cross purposes is of course Blizzard. This company is in my oppinion the only reasonable thing to discuss in realtion to our beloved game(s). I don't want to mention my position on this issue, I only wonna stress once more that arguing whose game is the most fun to play isn't constructive in any way.
