i got to D+ but then again i only won a couple of macro games, the rest were just general rts knowledge (when to expand etc). in sc1 you can literally get to super high ranks by nothing but mechanics

Honestly I've been following and posting here since the start of SC2 beta, and I've never really seen any stunning insight from top players posted here. I've seen top players come and complain about certain features or certain imbalances, but rarely see any thing posted that would actually help even a bronze level player, much less another top player, improve at the game. Oh there's no doubt that these e-celebrities are in a class of their own, but that doesn't automatically result in great discussion or useful knowledge. In fact it almost seems like common sense that the best players are the ones who are spending the least amount of time on a forum when they could instead be playing more games. If you want to give special props and status to top players, great, they've earned it. Ask them to write editorials or articles or give them their own "pro players onry" area. But don't act like the discussion from Diamond level players is some how bringing TL.net down. Most players are not even diamond level, and most diamond level players probably can learn the most from other mediocre players, simply because top players aren't really saying too much that's useful.

What'is interesting in this topic is how can we have some real interesting stuff in the forum because right now with all the new members every thread is flooded by whine and stupid advice : "How can i beat Mutas magic box with Thors" -> "Thors >>> Mutas, you are a noob" etc. Why not create a sub forum with a Elistist Jerk forum rules, i mean not a forum with only Top diamond access but a forum heavily checked by the Mods to ensure whine, spam and already said stuff are deleted/banned ? That would be avoid to read 50 pages to find 1 interesting post. That works quite well for Wow why not for SC2 ?

My faux awesomeness disappeared after they installed the game, played a for a couple weeks, and easily made Diamond themselves.

Even if that was true it wouldn't matter. The top players let their gameplay speak for them, and then their matches and tactics are discussed on death on the boards, so that way the top tier dispenses their knowledge without even having to post a word on the forums. Things are only truly difficult the first time. It took the worlds mightiest power years and years to build the nuclear bomb, now anyone can do it.

I know jack shit of SCII but am doing reasonably good for a casual player just because my mechanics are C- worthy

i'm a pretty bad player and the only 1v1's i win are against noobs. i really don't even attempt to counter my opponent - i just go mass marine/tank/medivac every game and get stomped against decent opponent. there are many many terribad diamond players at >500.

I mean I'm sure it is going to change when the game comes out, but I feel like there are a lot of people in Diamond that shouldn't be in Diamond. Like me. Someone like me who is pretty terribad is in Diamond, and better than a lot of players he faces in diamond. Diamond should be something for the best of the best, and platnum should be standard for everyone else. Hopefully when the game gets out for longer things fix themselves, or blizzard should make some changes.

I entirely agree though that Diamond players are just better players than Platinum, but you know... not everybody can be a pro.

There are the pros, there's bronze league noobs, and there's everyone else. ICCup had it right, most players should be D or D+, the difference between low diamond and mid silver is almost nothing, it's a slightly better understanding of what things are harder for average bad players to counter. (It could also be the decision to play protoss instead of zerg.) Leagues pretty much exist to satisfy the millions of "I'm not even going to make an effort" players, many of whom came over from WoW and rest their fingers on WASD while playing. Figure out a basic game mechanic that's explained in the manual, put a couple of wins together, get promoted from bronze to silver. It's like trying to have accurate rankings of a group of basketball players where you have about 40 NBA players, 500 middle school kids, and 2 million six-year-olds. How do you divide those into balanced groups? You kinda can't.

Right now the rankings on SC2 mean very little. Acknowledging that someone who's >1000 diamond is pretty good at the game is about as far as one can go. Until the game has been out for a year and the player base becomes skilled and very familiar with the game, ranks mean so little because there aren't nearly enough solid players.

and rest their fingers on WASD while playing. Grid style hotkeys exist for a reason. I rest my fingers on WASD because that's where my hotkeys are.
