I was contemplating getting a gaming system before I started University a couple of years ago. I did some research on PS3, XBox360, and Wii. I discovered that all 3 systems had pros and cons. I figured that the best choice for me was a PS3 (ability to play all older games, blu-ray/dvd, etc). However, I did not end up buying it.....
Whenever anyone in my family was contemplating getting a new system, I advised them which one was the best for them. Fast-forward to a few weeks ago - a bunch of family members decided to pitch and buy me a PS3 for my bday (since they knew it was the better system for me).
Well, they got me the 250 gb slim version.
I just tried loading up Gran Turismo 4 on the PS3, and recieved an error message - the PS3 does not support PS2 games. I found this puzzling, since when I looked it up previously, they did support PS2 games.
So, I looked it up again. It turns out that the newer versions of the PS3 do not have the capability of running PS2 games. Of course, not being content with that answer, I started looking for ways to run games on the PS3 through other means.
I didn't know they were doing this, and I didn't think that a "newer" version of the PS3 would actually lose some of the capabilities of the "older" versions of the PS3..... Of course, nobody in my family would have known about it either.....
IMO wikipedia has data on that..a lot of the features of the ps3 fat were not present in the slim version...actually some of the "newer" fat ones aren't as packed as the first few fat ones, because my friend has a fat ps3 but it doesn't have the sd card readers and he only has 2 usb slots.,,
I have a fat ps3 that supports backtrack just fine.
Also, my PS2 is kinda broken..... One of the reasons that a PS3 was the idea choice in their minds (since they didn't know that PS2 games are no longer supported).....
I posted this cause that video made me laugh, pretty hard, even though I'm pretty frustrated with Sony right now.....
well my mentality is that I didn't buy a PS3 to play PS2 games... so I'm fine with Sony not including PS2 compatibility. If it's truly cost-cutting as they say then so be it.
Anyways Gran Turismo 5 is coming out November 2nd so you can wait for that!
PCSX2 is pretty good now, I was playing FFX-2 at full speed in 1080p (much better than shitty ps2 resolution). Give it a go if you really want some ps2 action. It isn't compatible with everything but it is pretty damn close these days.

Yes, they are bricking/fucking up ps3s left and right with their updates. So everytime my ps3 tells me to update I do some research first...

I have GT4 also but I have to find it first, I'll see how well it runs.
What kind of controller do you use?
I don't know much about emulation beyond snes/nes emulators. I'd love to play Dark Cloud 2 or something on my PC though. I can't imagine using my keyboard though

Just make sure you read the reviews when buying from them, like people are saying you don't need drivers for that adapter because it is HID compliant. It comes with a "Driver CD", the CD has Malware on it (normal for China). I've recieved one of those "Driver CDs" with a bluetooth dongle I bought so I just tossed it in the bin. The bluetooth dongle works great though
In other news I found my GT4 disc and gave it a shot, it was pretty much unplayable though I only got about 25 fps and it would crash before the race started. Some people have got the NTSC version to run at full speed though. Damn my PAL version to hell.
They removed the backward compatibility to reduce the production cost, which most people were complaining about. Don't worry though, with the new jailbreak following the removal of Other OS, we soon won't be able to play PS3 games on it.
