Without going into too much detail, my family of four, me, older sister and parents, immigrated to Canada from South Korea when I was a kid. My dad actually had a great career going in Korea, but decided that it would be better for the family's future if we came to Canada. For my sister's and my own education and our future careers.
We've been living here for around 12 years now, and though English is by far my best language, I can still speak enough Korean to have a conversation going. I just don't know a few terms and am very slow at reading/writing. This is thanks to my parents always using Korean at home, despite the fact that they need to get better at English, and ought to use that at home to improve. Instead, they decided it would be better if kept my Korean up to par. Now, I can listen to Korean commentaries while understanding most of what they're saying =D.
My sister is evil, but shares a lot of common interests with me. She does have an iron grip on my behaviour, but we get along pretty well. We argue every now and then, but we just leave each other alone for a while and we both cool off. But it doesn't change the fact that she's evil =D.
My parents are the most awesome parents you could ever have. Unlike most Asian parents, they are very loose about how I go about. I got mostly 70s and 80s in my middle school, but they don't impose any harsh limits on what I do in my free time. Of course, they do encourage me to study, but even so, they give me so much freedom to do as I want.
My dad is the coolest guy ever. Mostly because he doesn't mind if I talk to him like a friend instead of a father. This, of course, leads to funny happenings. When I tag along to his workplace and have lunch with him and his coworkers, a lot of the talk involves me complaining about how my Dad is so terrible at cooking and how he should give me more money. We share a lot of laughs over topics like that. Sometimes though, he does have this air of strictness around when it involves my future, but that's just because he cares about how I grow up and he is a swell guy.
My mom is great as well. She teaches me a lot of stuff, including cooking, a bit of piano, as well as gardening, accounting, whatever. Actually, she teaches me pretty much everything I need. Whenever I need someone, she's there to help. Did I mention she's a great cook?
Whatever I do, my family will support it. Sure, they'd prefer that I do some schoolwork instead of playing Starcraft all the time, but they don't go crazy about it. It's all very lax. Thanks to that, I think I've been able to grow up in a very comfortable position and I think I've ended up with a better view of life than I otherwise would have.
Best Family Ever.
