I'm not going to spoiler anything here, this is aimed to be a discussion for those who have seen the movie. It's one of my favorite movies from 2007 because I think the ending was really great. There are two choices the main character is presented with, and both are easily justifiable. The purpose of this is to create dialogue and discussion about it.
Brief synopsis of the scenario just in case you want to talk about this but haven't seen the movie.
Basically Doyle "kidnaps" Amanda in order to give her a better life, because his own daughter was killed. It's sorta his way of making up for all the other kids he failed to save during his tenure. Patrick figures this out, and at the end, he can either let Doyle keep Amanda, or call the police and return her to her mother (who's a drug addict, horrible parent, etc). His girlfriend wants him to keep Amanda with Doyle because she will have a better life.
He ends up deciding to call the police and give Amanda back to her mother. His reasoning is that he wouldn't be able to live with himself knowing that a girl was taken from her mother, even if she might have a better life, one day she might grow up and wish she knew her mother - and he would have been able to fix that situation but never did. It's basically a matter of principle to him, that he can absolutely never bend... even if it means that Amanda will end up being worse off living with her mother.
Do you agree or disagree with his decision?
Personally, although I would be TORN if actually faced with something like this, I probably would have done what he did. I think that if you don't live by your principles you have nothing. And I also think that at the end of the day you have to do the right thing. What if her mother changes, and ends up raising Amanda well? Obviously the odds are stacked against that... but you never know.
Anyways, discuss!

Giving the girl back to the mother was the right thing to do imo. Even if she would have had a better life with the police chief, who gets to judge parenting ability. As long as the girl gets the required minimum by law, then who are we to judge other parents. Though, it leaves a bad feeling in your stomach. The right thing to do is not always the easiest.

havent seen the movie but thats fucking retarded of course you dont give the kid back to the drug addict

He did the right thing. If the mother is doing a bad job parenting, social services can be called and take the child away legally. Patrick's girlfriend, while hot, was pretty dumb to break up with him over doing the right thing. I thought the real villain in this movie was his girlfriend, who just bailed on him when things got tough.
Something you guys might also not know: Patrick stuck around in the kids life to make sure she was okay. He didn't just leave her with a druggie. When her mother wasn't around, he was.

Here's a side comment. I was surprised when I found out that the actor that played the mother, plays "Holly" in The Office whom has an extremely different personality--good actor, I barely noticed.

You should do some drugs, maybe you wouldn't be so angry.

completely agree. the child is the important person in this scenario, not the retarded drug addict mother.

That's why due process exists. If the cop knows the mother is a drug addict then there are ways to get the child removed from such an unsafe environment that don't involve being a vigilante and kidnapping her.

If I remember correctly, the final scene of this movie was hauntingly depressing... where he visits the mother and sees the daughter being neglected, and he's left with that sickening realization that he might've made the wrong decision--that he'd might've made a mistake by taking Amanda from a perfectly good home... And it was almost painful to see the mother's nonchalance about her daughter's wellbeing as a viewer, knowing everything that had been sacrificed in order for the daughter to be back to where she was now.

The ideal situation is social services takes the child away and then a more fitting parent adopts her. But if you're already in bizarro cinema-land where police chiefs swipe children to raise them better than their shitty parents, you're past the point of relying on due process.

If I were Amanda I would hate Patrick forever and the first chance I would get I would find Patrick and tell him what a stupid fucking choice he made.

the only reason this is how the ending went was to create controversy. i.e. you wouldnt be making this blog had the child stayed with freeman
|
Give the girl back to the mother. It's not his call to change that girl's life so drastically like that. He could of course call child services or something like that directly after, but he can't just let the girl stay with some random guy even if it is better than her current situation.

I love how you say you're not going to spoiler anything, then lay out the whole movie including the ending, lolz.
But yeah, the decision is lame, but so was the kidnapping. And all this retarded shit only happened to make the movie interesting.
In real life, people woulda called the cops on the mother, baby taken away, The End.
