So I did my placement matches tonight after being away for awhile. I've always been 10-15 ranked platinum, so I figured I'd easily place in plat right.
I'm kind of drunk so I wasn't playing THAT great but I mean, I picked veteran, win my first three.. I lose to a baneling bust in my 4th game because I didnt scout it (the guy goes baneling bust in every single match he's ever played when I checked it lol) and then win the 5th. So I go 4-1 picking veteran.. then I get placed in gold. wtf. So one loss to cheese and I get placed in gold. Cooooool.
I don't understand SC2's placement system.
Time to spend the next week grinding my way to plat zzzzzz. Shouldn't have played while drunk.

Always thought it was 5-0 platinum, 4-1 gold, 3-2 silver, 2-3 bronze, 1-4 or 0-5 copper, regardless of the option you choose at the beginning..

I've gone 4-1 a couple other times from stupid losses and placed in plat before. So I dunno. ;(

really it shouldn't take a whole week to get back to plat.. just go like 5-0 or 6-0 and you should be placed back it plat.

I lost to someone who ended up in silver who dual inbase raxed me. I got golded. Won my next 5 games and got promoted.

Oh does it really only take that many matches? My hope is restored. ^_^

I don't understand why people care so much about their initial placement.

^ That, I've been platinum for the past three resets but due to having alot of trouble TvZ I got shoved in bronze. It's not too bad, I win nearly all my games down here so I just need to play my way back up.
I went 2-3, lost my first three TvZ's then won a TvP and TvT really easily.

It honestly doesn't matter at all, even if you get stuck in gold/silver for a while you will still end up being matched against gold/plat almost every time if you are winning. I got put in silver and ended up playing platinum players most of the time...

It's okay Angra. All of us subperform when we're drunk.
Naw, just kidding. Good luck on getting Plat back.

Ages ago when they had 10 placement matches I went something like 6-4 and was still placed in platinum.
I think they use an algorithm that takes into account unspent resources, apm, game length, build order compared to common opening builds stored in the database, etc.

No, I'm pretty sure the wins - losses doesn't have any effect, only the rating of the players you are against. Say you go 6 - 4. Maybe your first match was against a bronze and you won. The system then think "ok, he's way better than that" and pitches you against a low gold next match. You win. The system then pitches you against a high rank platinum, you lose. Mid gold, you win, etc. Win losses numbers don't matter, those numbers are only affected by the type of players the system pitches you against to judge you. That's why you can still end up in platinum and lose almost 50% of your placements match.

That sounds completely logical.

4-1 gold sounds pretty reasonable. I haven't had an issue with any placements. I've always figured that if I went 4-1, then I'd be placed in Gold, 3-2 in silver, maybe gold or bronze, etc.
However, I have gone 5-0 before in 2v2 and been placed in Gold. After winning the 5th one I was like "Oh hey, plat easy right?". Nope, Gold. Was pretty ticked off the rest of the day.

just log out and relog then your account will be reset so you'll be able to redo teh placement matches

I've had my account reset so many times and every time I've gone 4-1 I've ended up in gold, 3-2 has given me silver and 5-0 plat. I'm sure the system COULD be sophisticated, but quite frankly 5 games isn't a big enough sample size for anything. That and you actually do play alot against unranked opponents (esp. after a ladder reset), so win/loss ratio is all the system can rely on.
That being said after placing in silver it took 5 games to hop to gold and 7 to hop to plat. If you're high plat material it'll stick you there pretty fast. I'm more around 30ish plat material, the skill level of which isn't too different from top gold TBH, so if that sounds more like you you might have to play alot of games at the top gold ranks. Not that it really matters, the one thing the system does well is find skilled opponents for you. Even if it doesn't always flatter you with the highest ranking possible.

I made this same blog. Haha, except I had more nerd rage so people flipped out.
5 stars.

has anyone gone 4-1 recently (as in today or yesterday) and still gotten platinum rating? it seems like 4-1 will only get you plat if its right after a reset.
