First if all let me say: There is no perfect rule for promotion.
I saw 5-0 and 4-1 -> platinum
i saw 5-0 and 4-1 -> gold
i saw 2-3 and 3-2 -> silver

I was put in platinum pre reset too, going 5-0, but this time i went 2-3, because somehow my opponent were fucking good^^
Was put into silver and went 13-2 from there, making it 15-5, got promoted first to gold during the games and then to platinum at 15-5.

Well i dont really care about the first promotion. If you are in a lower league as your skill lvl suggests, then you will naturally win alot and get in your league soon.

personally, i think there should be 10 placement matches. I won all 5 of my placements because the majority of beta players are noob as shit, so i got placed into platinum. the only problem is, im not a platinum level player. I can take some of the lower rank plats, maybe like 100-80ish, but im definitely more of a gold level player. im doign okay so far, but thats because it just reset and everyone is still 5-0.

so... i dont know. i think there should be a longer placement period, personally. or maybe even no 'real' placement.

i feel a good system would be that you start in copper [EVERYONE] and depeinding on your win:lose ratio, you get promotions. if you go 5:0 in copper, you go to silver, 5:0 silver, you go to gold, 10:2 gold or maybe 11-2, to platinum.

just IMO though. who knows, this current system might just be a gimped version for the beta

My first 5 games of SC2 were placements. i lost my first one, and won the next 4. I got into gold. I wasn't MASS gaming but was playing to keep first. I didn't get promoted.

Then i went 4-1 again, the loss being a misshotkey press leading to me leaving for no reason, so i was in gold. I won 6 games in a row vs Favored opponents and got promoted.

It's just about winning against better players i think.

I went 4-1 as well, lost to a marauder push (still do, lol). However, after laddering in gold for a little while I was promoted to Platinum by my 12thish game. It's pretty easy to get promoted, so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

the placements are sort of weird, for all the other the resets i went 4-1 got put in gold, stayed in top ten gold. the most recent reset i went 5-0, got put in plat and plat is easier than gold ._. wtb iccup rankings

During some of my placements I went up against a few people already in a league. It is possible you lost to someone in a lower league and beat 4 other people in a lower - mid league as well. I did 4-1 and went platinum, the only game I lost was to a very decent player which kind of took me by surprise because it was my first placement game. Haven't done my placements since the last reset (yesterday). When I did my first placements back in Feb. when you needed 10 I went 7-3 and got placed in copper.

Just think of the placements having a hidden rating attached to them. If you go 5-0 and play against people even matched or favoured against you expect to place in platinum, go 5-0 against people who you are favoured against, it is possible you get platinum but gold is most likely.

Doing my placement matches tonite again, I might go 2-3 or 1-4 and see what league I get placed in.

No, I'm pretty sure the wins - losses doesn't have any effect, only the rating of the players you are against. Say you go 6 - 4. Maybe your first match was against a bronze and you won. The system then think "ok, he's way better than that" and pitches you against a low gold next match. You win. The system then pitches you against a high rank platinum, you lose. Mid gold, you win, etc. Win losses numbers don't matter, those numbers are only affected by the type of players the system pitches you against to judge you. That's why you can still end up in platinum and lose almost 50% of your placements match.

That's exactly what I said...the wins/losses have no effect on your placement. It is by some algorithm or system that looks at all the other components.

though what you said also would be feasible too...except when a reset happens no one has any previous records/rating in the database...so that is why I am saying it probably does it by an algorithm that incorporates all the other information i mentioned.

that was the point I was making, it is not just based off of your win/loss record of your placement matches. Otherwise, I would have been in copper the first times when I went 6-4 vs good players. So it is pretty silly to think the win/loss record has anything to do with your placement. I have got plat each time regardless of wins/losses (mainly talking about the first few patches, I lost a bunch of placement matches, still plat tho).

The main problem with placement matches is definitely the quality of opponent. Like, I am sure the system tries to account for that, but yeah.

I just got beta and I was actually hoping to lose a couple placement matches so that I can learn the game at a more relaxed pace in silver or something. Shouldn't be too hard since I am only D on Iccup.

First match was a TvT, I had two marines, a hellion, and a banshee(with two more banshees on the way) in his base by the time he had one marine. I kid you not.
Next match was a ZvZ, guy disconnected.
Next match was a ZvZ. I played terrible since it was my first time ever with Zerg, was mostly learning hotkeys. He rushes for mutas off of two hatches. I simply built a lot of roaches and zealots and sent them in once I saw the mutas and ended up rolling him.

So yeah, I still have two more to go, but the range of skill levels you can get matched up against is so big that I think they could really use more placement matches.

its not that big of a deal to get placed in gold. I went 4-1 and got placed in gold and got promoted to platinum by the time i had played like 15 games. If you are really platinum level it won't take the game that long to figure it out.

If you are actually a platinum player than it shouldnt take more than a dozen games to rank up.

Well they want to test out their placement system in the beta so the best way to get a lot of information is to get people through them as quick as possible, my guess during release you will hopefully need to do 20 or more, but my guess is they will set it at 10-15 because people will get bored of not getting any points.

It is hard to give you quality opponents in placements because well you haven't been tested out yet and neither have they.

Same happened to my friend. I really think that 5 placement matches are not enough. However, we shouldn't be stressing too much about beta folks

They could just be doing 5 placement matches because its beta and they are resetting often. I wouldnt be surprised if they went back 10 placement matches for release.

Patch 9:
Installed and clicked Veteran (afaik, this will first match you with a random/unknown, then a silver, then a silver, then a gold, then a plat. something like this anyways). if you 5-0, there is a good chance you make platinum.
If you got 4-1 (like I did because of a disc) you will land in gold.
When I landed in gold I was asking everyone I played their ranks, and it seemed that whenever I won a game- the next game I played would be vs a high gold or platinum guy. If I lost, it would be vs a low gold, silver, or other random scrub rank occasionally.
I disced 2 or 3 times, which screwed me up a bit, but basically I worked my way up the gold ranks to #1 spot and then played maybe 10 or so more games (mostly with plats) and won the majority of them.
Total record 5-8 zerg (stupid larva bug), 11-4 terran, 5-1 protoss, and then the 2-3 discs. 21-16 record. Odd, I just noticed that my rec is 21-14 so maybe the discs didn't count towards my record, but still towards my placement.

at about 1190 elo gold #1_d3 I played 1 more game and won, (which brought me over 1200) I instead was instantly promoted to rank 9 platinum with elo 0f 1062. I didn't notice the disparity between the #2 guy or most of the rest of the gold so I dunno if that matters either.

It seems that any time you lose to someone that is the league they place you in. So if you lost to a gold, that's where you go etc.
..and then I would, ya know, check em'. (Aka SpoR)

yeah I agree with this. Odds are they placed it at 5 due to the frequent resets, but when retail is released, 10 games seems more reasonable considering the length of time between ladder resets should be at the very minimum a few months.

So CM, you're saying that if I go 4-1 in placements beating a couple golds, a silver, and a bronze, but lose to a copper by some proxy fluke or disconnect, then I'd get placed in copper?

I find it highly unlikely.

Well, I just got placed in platinum after going 5x0 in placement. But that doesn't mean I'm a good player, I'm copper or bronze, maybe silver at most. What happened was that I faced 2 players worse than me and 3 players at the same level and won all the matches. So, I guess it actually takes only wins-losses into account for the placement and, in that case, 10 games would definitely give a more accurate idea about the player's level.
Anyway, I'll just get ready for the incoming rapes until I get demoted at least to Silver.

Excatly what happened to me; I posted here so I'll quote myself xD

I thought I would get placed in sliver (I voted for that too b/c at the time I didn't finish my placement matches) since I suck but I managed to win all five placement matches and got placed in plat (luckily right? or maybe not).

Here's the situation:
2/5 games, the player just left (no reason whatsoever, I wasn't even at an advantage); They were both ranked silver.
2/5 games, the opponent was bronze.
1/5 games, the opponent was unranked. (EDIT: Don't know about now but he/she was unranked when I faced him/her)

So now I'm gonna be stuck in plat. The strangest thing is that I never even faced any plat or gold players so how did I get placed in plat?

EDIT: For some reason, I can't view other people's profile anymore; I tried to check up on the unranked player but couldn't
