As I mentioned a long time ago, I was put in charge of a forum and had to increase membership, as mentioned here: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=95867
As you may figure out, I have managed to waste quite a lot of time attempting to convince people to join a forum. My boss is pressuring me on the lack of activity in the forum, despite my best efforts to get friends and people from other places to join. And I don't think it's quite possible to get any more people, either: to put it in the words of one of my friends, he (bluntly) stated: "I don't give a f*** about ******* right now when I have school." It's clearly not that I haven't tried to get people interested: it's just that, quite frankly, nobody seems to give a shit about the topic of the forum, despite the fact that it's actually really important.
The trouble is, I don't know how to explain this to my boss. I wanted to keep this avenue/connection open, but its really taking quite a toll on my sleep. I still haven't asked for payment yet, even though I've worked for probably 50 hours (although I don't feel I've really accomplished enough to justify my effort). /end rant

Uh, you mean you wasted 50 hours of your time trying to attract people to a deadbeat forum without asking for some payment in return? I'm not sure if this connection is worth it. This boss seems like a total idiot that's trying to pursue a terrible idea and has trouble letting go.
I would just ask him for the money and if he'll be an ass about it tell him to fuck off and forget about it like the plague.
If he doesn't appreciate your honesty and bluntness on the matter -he's an idiot. Type out gg and leave.

While I agree he certainly deserves to be paid for his work, its not exactly easy to ask for money while having nothing to show for it. I would be pretty embarassed+nervous to ask (I would demand to be paid, of course).
And by the way, telling someone to fuck off while asking for money doesn't exactly go well together.

And by the way, telling someone to fuck off while asking for money doesn't exactly go well together. You ask first and tell them to fuck off afterwards if they don't Naturally.
If you're too embarassed that you have nothing to show for it, then just tell your boss and quit. Don't let him waste any more of your time without offering some sort of compensation.

Change the topic and introduce Osu to him.

Convincing people isn't about begging though. You have to promote its benefits and make people want to join. No need to tell them about what the forum does, tell them what's new and cool and happening in town when you join the forum.
"Many people are joining, blahblah, cool society, young crowd, benefits of being a member"
Make it sound interesting, people want fun and stuff, when they have those they'll join in any discussion.
Your boss wants results, you manage to give him results, he'll get off your back. But first you have to make the forum sound attractive. How I manage to get people to join TL: "it's the fucking best Starcraft site in the world dude, you're out of the loop if you don't join."
People chase quality and fun, you want them to join, you display that. =]
And your boss - Tell him he can either keep you or let you go, but put it subtly that he'll be put through trouble to find someone of better calibre than you.

It's not like I haven't been trying those tactics either: just nobody believes me or follows up. It's really quite frustrating.

so, what's the forum about? sometimes i'm really into politics (:
|
why not post the link here? a few TLers might spot it and hop over for some posts
|
i'd rather not, i'm going to cut my ties, and its not actually about politics-more along the lines of financial education. Which, although noble, has very little to do with what most young adultish people care about.

Change a job. I say that not because I'm for quick fix. Doing sales really also depends on what you are selling, not just your sales pitch or aptitude. If no one wants something, offer quantity = 1 is also way too much. Demand and supply dude, demand and supply.

then why the hell do you spend your time with this shit? this is the most retarded thing i've read for quite a while. a) you work for someone without having a contract that states when you will get how much money? first lol b) your job is to get ppl to join a forum which obv sucks? second lol c) you are asking friends to join (absolutely reasonable). they don't want and you say that the forum doesn't have any benefits. then why the fuck don't you tell this your boss? d) if you still wan't ppl to join the forum, you will obv have to give them some sort of compensation for the time it takes to make an account there, money f.e. "join the forum, i'll give u 10 bucks" e) i suppose you don't want to pay that from your own money ending up sponsoring the company you work for, so the only conclusion is: tell your boss to fuck off and that you want your money
my god...
