[Nal_Ra's Hallucination] Light[aLive]'s Three Mistakes
▶ 2009.4.13 - Shinhan Proleague 08-09 4th Round
◆ SK Telecom vs MBC Game 2nd Set Outsider Bisu vs Light
If there is a winner, there must be a loser. Although your play might not up to be your standards, its always better to win, than to lose with a perfect game play.
I want take time and think as the position of the loser, and look back at the mistakes the player made, and think about what he could have done better.
Today, I want to look back at the Shinhan Proleague 4th Round, the 2nd match between SK Telecom and MBC game, Bisu vs Light - and take Light's position.
First, I would like to point out 3 things Light could have done better. At the start of the match, Light started off well, cheese rushing Bisu, and successfully taking his Nexus down.
Although his Nexus was down, Bisu probably did think that he could still win. (And the results show he did)
However, it is also true Light, who successfully took Bisu's Nexus down, probably thought more strongly [than Bisu] that he could win.
First, I would like to point out and applaud one of Bisu's moves. Bisu did not use his probes in the nat. expansion to defend the cheese rush, but very calmly made the decision to move them back to his base. This decision to make his probes live was a very admirable move.
If Bisu lost his calmness and used his probes to defend his Nexus [and lose them pointlessly], I believe the probability of Bisu losing the game would have been much
higher.
◆Light taking down Bisu's Nexus with a cheese rush
Now going back to Light, his cheese rush was good, and he accomplished taking down the Nexus. Then, after taking his nat. expansion, he focuses on making drop ships. I want to make a small point here, 'what if he made the Starport in the 5 O' Clock corner, where it would be hard to scout?'
First, lets look at the first mistake Light made. A screen comes out where Bisu sees with his observer, Lights drop ship. Although not 100% sure, if you see, after the drop ship comes out, Light goes to his nat.exp, then changes his course to 7 O' Clock, which indicates Light was aware of Bisu's observer. [You actually have to see the game to understand completely]
Then what if Light made the decision to move his vultures using the 1 O' Clock path and move to the 12 O' Clock area, while he used his drop ship to take two tanks to the 11 O' Clock expansion? (Instead of going to Bisu's base)
Bisu did check the drop ship with this observer, so there were no dragoons in the center, so the vulture would have easily reached the 12 O' Clock area. It would also have been very easy for the drop ship to reach the 11 O'Clock area.
◆The unfortunate Starport positioning
If Light dropped his tanks, then move the vultures [at the 12'O clock position] using his drop ship, he could have harassed behind the 11 O'Clock minerals. It would have been possible to take the 11 O'Clock expansion down.
If Light had made this move and took Bisu's expansion down, the meta game would definitely have changed.
Now lets look at the 2nd mistake. [I'm translating this as a mistake, but its more of a, what he could have done better] It is about 20 minutes into the game. Light's two drop ships fly into Bisu's main base. It was a great timing. Bisu was preparing for a big fight, and therefore all his units were positioned above his own nat.exp.
At this point. With this 2 drop ships, Light is able to do a lot of damage. However, Light here also loses his nat exp. to Bisu, thus what he gained through the two drop ships was lost.
◆Give and Take
If Light was planning to move into the center when his population hit 150, it would have been a better decision to simply block off his nat.exp using simcity. Also, what if his factories were rallied [Light did not rally point his factories toward the nat. exp]towards the nat. exp?
If this was the case he could have lessened his losses, and gained much from his two drop ships. Bisu was already in the center, and even if Bisu went back he saw the drop ship, Light would have profited. Onceagain, this would have changed the meta game.
Let's look at Light's final mistake. Light was a little baffled because his dropship didnt work 100%, but both players were [at this point in the game] playing with the confidence that they could win.
23 minutes, 30 seconds into the game, Light manages to take down Bisu's units at the center. After this point, it is important. [in deciding the winner]
This is a point when 1 second can feel like a long time. That's how much a second is important in this point of the game. Lights decision to move to 1 O' Clock, after taking Bisu's nat exp, was an excellent decision.
But here we can see his mistake. When he entered Bisu's natural expansion it was 23min. 50seconds, and he left at 24min. 17seconds. In other words, it took 27 seconds to take down the Nexus. If Light was more precise with his controls and made his tanks force-attack the Nexus, he would have taken down the Nexus under 15 seconds.
◆Take the Nexus down faster, Light
If Light had done this, he would have had more time attacking 1 O'Clock, and also would have abridged the time it took for him to take down Bisu's exp at 12 O'Clock. Bisu's resources were mainly coming from the 1 O' Clock and 12 O' Clock expansion, so if Light took these two expansions down faster, Light would have had a higher chance of winning.
Becoming Light's position, I summarized three things Light could have done better. Players become better by looking back at their mistakes, and improving upon them.
It must have been a disappointing game for Light, but I believe he earned as much as he lost in this game.
Of course, it is all because of Bisu, who played a calm, excellent game, that Light made these unintentional mistakes.
Although I did look at Light's mistakes, what he could have done better, Light did what he thought was the best action, and I believe he made great decisions.
I thank Bisu and Light for a great, tense game, and I believe that they will show us many more in the future.

* I don't know if its my problem, or Ra's problem, but I simply can not translate some of his sentences. Some of the sentences aren't clear, or redundant. Also, he is assuming you watched the game (which I didn't). So, I shortened the last part a bit, but that's not important.
