In light of the response to the recent “Ultralisk Cake” thread and the emergence of some impressive imitators I propose: A BAKE-OFF.
For the next 2 weeks (unless people think we’ll need more time), in this thread, post pictures and a “making of” explanation for any type of baked good...or, I guess, even any type of food for that matter. There can be as many categories of judging as we like, but I propose the following:…
…as far as judging, seems we can do it any number of ways. I think the best would be either an elected panel of judges, a poll, or some combination of the two. Since I already baked a cake, I don’t mind entering that one, competing with something else, judging, or sitting out… whatever the TL gods will (though I would love to enter the ultralisk cake…). After we discuss it a bit, I’ll add a poll to this or whatever so we can start the judging.
What say ye? Wanna? Should all kinds of food be allowed? We like the categories? How and when should we judge?
EDIT: Deadline has been extended until the end of April. Voting will begin on May 1, when I will post polls under all the categories.

Hey guys, sorry I'm a couple days late. I won my pageant, yay! but it has kept me super busy and this took a while to get together with all the polls. I had hoped to make one more submission myself, but I didn't have time. I guess I'll just have to make it later for fun...not competition.
And now the voting begins! I have added a poll under each category with an option for each submitted cake. Since I was only able to present up to 12 in the poll, I left out:
SoLaR[i.C] Starry Night Cake
Sushiman Tetris Cake
Purthas Apple Tart
I chose these because they were all made previous to this competition, and some didn't have 'making of' pictures. Please feel free to post in a vote for them though, and I will tally and count them in the results. (Sorry guys, it was the only way I could think of to pick any.)
EDIT: Thanks to CharlieMurphy for putting together pictures of all the cakes here:

I am not very pleased with my decorating of this one.Its the first time ive used royal frosting and now know what I should have.
I did a rainbow cake with Royal frosting (egg whites, powder sugar, lemon juice) It hardens very fast and is a breeze to color.
I also miscalculated the size of the cakes I needed so I had to off set the top of the cake in order for it to look good at all so all you get is a shitty frontal of my cake.
Hope you guys like it again I feel I could have done a much better job.
Heres some pics
This is my White base (Next time I need more frosting, in batches, not all at once)

I ran out of my dark gray frosting and my royal icing technique is non existent currently.
Here you can see the colors of my rainbow cake (insides) also a small cake from leftovers etc.

My sister and I put together a photon cannon cake!
It was really hard to make - maybe a bit too ambitious since my sister is still learning all the tricks of the trade but we had fun making it.
EDIT: Forgot to mention but the whole thing is edible (except the wire holding up the energy ball - which is made up of cotton candy btw)

So, if no-one minds, I'll enter for competition the ultralisk cake that started this madness. Behind the spoiler are the pics and making of from the ultralisk cake thread.
As a joke, I told Geoff I would make him an ultralisk-shaped cake in honor of the premiere of WCG Ultimate Gamer. This, he said, was impossible, and bet me that I could not do it. So I did.
The cake was mostly inspired by this picture:
And this one, as far as the marines:
So I started with those.
Next, I baked 3 cakes, 2 basic round vanilla, and ...you may be sorry you asked... one chocolate cake in a "Precious Pony" cake shape mold. (My mom had it left over from my 8th birthday. Lawl!)
I used the Pony shaped paper insert that came with the pan, and traced it onto newpaper. Then, with a sharpie, I drew an ultralisk over the existing shape, changing the legs, outlining the details, and expanding it to include the spiky hood and the blades. Once I had done that, I cut out the entire thing, and then cut the pony shape out of the middle. This left me with patterns for the shapes of the rest of the cake that would be fitted to the outside of the 'pony.' (sorry, my camera didn't have enough batteries to get pics of all these prelim steps.)
Usually, for a base, I would use a platter or a cookie sheet, but those were too small for my monster ultralisk plan, so I covered a cutting board with foil. I used a sharp knife to cut around the newspaper shapes in the vanilla cake, and then fitted them to the outside of the chocolate cake on the board.
Then, I had to frost them together, so that you couldn't tell it was different cakes. This took about 3 tubs of frosting. I mixed chunky chocolate and cream cheese to get the bumpy tannish-brown color for the body, and then used food coloring with vanilla and cream cheese frostings to make beige, purple, gray (which my friend who wanted to help kind of turned lavender in the end lol), and dark purple. I ran out like, a bajillion times.
I started with the body and the scythes, spreading the frosting with a butter knife. In order to spread it smoothly, I had to regularly dip the knife in a cup of warm water.
This was hilarious, because when I was done with the frosting that was to be spread, all that was left of the pony was his happy little face.
(At this point in the process, my camera completely ran out of batteries. Sry. If I had known people would have been so interested, I would have more carefully documented each step lol!)
Anyway, next, I loaded up 3 cake decorating bags with the beige, purple, and dark purple frosting. They have different shaped decorative nozzles and look like this:
Then, I cut up about 4 Hershey bars with a serrated knife (they break if you don't kinda saw them) into triangle shapes.
Using the frosting bags, I added the outlines, attached the spikes and the claws, and drew the face.
As a finishing touch, I broke some teddy grahams in half, attached them to the board with red gel frosting, and then made some others lying in blood puddles near the bottom. I used the rest of the purple frosting for the words, and then gave them a shadow effect with the rest of the red. The final product was as you saw:
and THAT, my friends, is how you make an ultralisk cake for your superstar boyfriend. <3
BUT...I have another something up my proverbial sleeve, so don't rest easy yet... ULTRABAKER WILL STRIKE AGAIN
