Original OP:+ Show Spoiler +In light of the response to the recent “ Ultralisk Cake” thread and the emergence of some impressive imitators I propose: A BAKE-OFF. For the next 2 weeks (unless people think we’ll need more time), in this thread, post pictures and a “making of” explanation for any type of baked good...or, I guess, even any type of food for that matter. There can be as many categories of judging as we like, but I propose the following:… …as far as judging, seems we can do it any number of ways. I think the best would be either an elected panel of judges, a poll, or some combination of the two. Since I already baked a cake, I don’t mind entering that one, competing with something else, judging, or sitting out… whatever the TL gods will (though I would love to enter the ultralisk cake… ). After we discuss it a bit, I’ll add a poll to this or whatever so we can start the judging. What say ye? Wanna? Should all kinds of food be allowed? We like the categories? How and when should we judge? EDIT: Deadline has been extended until the end of April. Voting will begin on May 1, when I will post polls under all the categories.
Hey guys, sorry I'm a couple days late. I won my pageant, yay! but it has kept me super busy and this took a while to get together with all the polls. I had hoped to make one more submission myself, but I didn't have time. I guess I'll just have to make it later for fun...not competition.
And now the voting begins! I have added a poll under each category with an option for each submitted cake. Since I was only able to present up to 12 in the poll, I left out:
SoLaR[i.C] Starry Night Cake
Sushiman Tetris Cake
Purthas Apple Tart
I chose these because they were all made previous to this competition, and some didn't have 'making of' pictures. Please feel free to post in a vote for them though, and I will tally and count them in the results. (Sorry guys, it was the only way I could think of to pick any.)

Next, I baked 3 cakes, 2 basic round vanilla, and ...you may be sorry you asked... one chocolate cake in a "Precious Pony" cake shape mold. (My mom had it left over from my 8th birthday. Lawl!) I used the Pony shaped paper insert that came with the pan, and traced it onto newpaper. Then, with a sharpie, I drew an ultralisk over the existing shape, changing the legs, outlining the details, and expanding it to include the spiky hood and the blades. Once I had done that, I cut out the entire thing, and then cut the pony shape out of the middle. This left me with patterns for the shapes of the rest of the cake that would be fitted to the outside of the 'pony.' (sorry, my camera didn't have enough batteries to get pics of all these prelim steps.) Usually, for a base, I would use a platter or a cookie sheet, but those were too small for my monster ultralisk plan, so I covered a cutting board with foil. I used a sharp knife to cut around the newspaper shapes in the vanilla cake, and then fitted them to the outside of the chocolate cake on the board. Then, I had to frost them together, so that you couldn't tell it was different cakes. This took about 3 tubs of frosting. I mixed chunky chocolate and cream cheese to get the bumpy tannish-brown color for the body, and then used food coloring with vanilla and cream cheese frostings to make beige, purple, gray (which my friend who wanted to help kind of turned lavender in the end lol), and dark purple. I ran out like, a bajillion times. I started with the body and the scythes, spreading the frosting with a butter knife. In order to spread it smoothly, I had to regularly dip the knife in a cup of warm water. This was hilarious, because when I was done with the frosting that was to be spread, all that was left of the pony was his happy little face. (At this point in the process, my camera completely ran out of batteries. Sry. If I had known people would have been so interested, I would have more carefully documented each step lol!) Anyway, next, I loaded up 3 cake decorating bags with the beige, purple, and dark purple frosting. They have different shaped decorative nozzles and look like this: Then, I cut up about 4 Hershey bars with a serrated knife (they break if you don't kinda saw them) into triangle shapes. Using the frosting bags, I added the outlines, attached the spikes and the claws, and drew the face. As a finishing touch, I broke some teddy grahams in half, attached them to the board with red gel frosting, and then made some others lying in blood puddles near the bottom. I used the rest of the purple frosting for the words, and then gave them a shadow effect with the rest of the red. The final product was as you saw: and THAT, my friends, is how you make an ultralisk cake for your superstar boyfriend. <3 BUT...I have another something up my proverbial sleeve, so don't rest easy yet... Hmm, I was just thinking, we'll have to add to the rules that there has to be proof that you made the cake...like either a picture of you with it or at least a pic of a handwritten note with your name so that no one can cheat and just post pics off the net.

No sc stuff here, I'm afraid. But I made croissants several days ago if those count. But I put most of them in the freezer, and I could take pictures of some the next time I bake them. How detailed should a making-of be? I could just write the recipe up and explain the process. Too much detail? Not enough?
Also since I'm lazy and might end up not taking pictures, I'll post a picture of an apple tart I did a while ago. The photography isn't the best, and the tart was rough around the edges to start with, but it still came out all right.
Again, how much detail for the making-of? There isn't anything really unusual here, but I could describe how you make a tart (of any sort), I guess. The only additional step for this is "cut a whole bunch of really thin apple slices and arrange them."

@FuDDx, they were tasty but pretty hard. We learned that to get the cookie softness you have to undercook it a bit, but the shaft is vulnerable so you have to leave it in there until that hardens, so I'm guessing 8-9 minutes in the oven next time will suffice.

Ok here it is!!! A bunker!!!!!
I am not very pleased with my decorating of this one.Its the first time ive used royal frosting and now know what I should have.
I did a rainbow cake with Royal frosting (egg whites, powder sugar, lemon juice) It hardens very fast and is a breeze to color. I also miscalculated the size of the cakes I needed so I had to off set the top of the cake in order for it to look good at all so all you get is a shitty frontal of my cake.
Hope you guys like it again I feel I could have done a much better job.
Heres some pics
This is my White base (Next time I need more frosting, in batches, not all at once)
Me working on it.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y162/FuDDx/2008_0516etccookingmore0017.jpg
More working on it
I ran out of my dark gray frosting and my royal icing technique is non existent currently.
Here you can see the colors of my rainbow cake (insides) also a small cake from leftovers etc.
|
FuDDx, that cake looks positively horrible to eat xD
Pholon suggested a Spawning Pool soup - could be easily done to taste nice just with some chicken stock, lemon juice, and green capers if someone who can be fucked wanted to give it a go n_n Also you could make wee zerglings out of toast, making the outline/wireframe of a ling and heating it to burn it into the toast and then float them in the soup or just dip them in
Also, no one has done biscuits? They would be easiest.

none are impossible imo. If your gonna go with pulled sugar etc.I really would love to take some cake decorating classes. Its insane the things you can make.
Humm What would be cool though is a complete scene with a building and troops/peons etc coming out of it.Maybe with marzipan figures haha or something.

Screw you for being the first to post after me hurting my feelings right away
***sob sob sob ***
I wasn't trying to put it down, just that it doesn't look like something you'd stick in your mouth - a compliment seeing it is supposed to look like a grubby, zerg blood-encrusted space bunker n_n
You could be really fancy and take the technique used for making it rainbow in the middle to make some rough shape of wee marines in there so when you cut it there are 'rines standing there Hard to get them to look like marines, though.

A ling/lurker/scourge/defiler(w/swarm) flank on terran M&M, tank, vessel army in the middle of the map (i.e. in between the ramps) Blue Storm. I'd say that's impossible.

So, if no-one minds, I'll enter for competition the ultralisk cake that started this madness. Behind the spoiler are the pics and making of from the ultralisk cake thread.
+ Show Spoiler +As a joke, I told Geoff I would make him an ultralisk-shaped cake in honor of the premiere of WCG Ultimate Gamer. This, he said, was impossible, and bet me that I could not do it. So I did. ![[image loading]](http://photos-e.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs007.snc1/2624_576026206898_19709285_35404540_3980786_n.jpg) The cake was mostly inspired by this picture: And this one, as far as the marines: ![[image loading]](http://www.sc2blog.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/starcraft_samwise038c.jpg) So I started with those. <3
BUT...I have another something up my proverbial sleeve, so don't rest easy yet... ULTRABAKER WILL STRIKE AGAIN

Whoops, sorry, with pageant stuff going on I totally lost track of what day it was. Give me a bit, I'll put up the polls! If there are any last minute submissions, get them in now!

How are the polls gonna work?
Add an option for each question for every cake submitted?
Most SC accurate that actually looks exactly like a unit from starcraft
Most accurately depicted non-SC you can make something that’s not from starcraft…I guess
Most professional looking hax…you called a baker
Want to eat it the most nom nom nom
Masterbaker award the “making of” for this is the most creative/impressive
Most ambitious you really thought you could make a cake of that?
Funniest just makes you lawl
WCG Ultimate Baker the best overall

I don't get why people are voting for SC units/buildings on the most NON-SC cakes. That is just ridic. And I am not convinced that the reavercake is actually a cake, It looks like playdo.
Anyways, I voted the Photon canon as #1 SC unit and the rest I voted myself except the master baker award goes to FUDDx because of all the pics and cakes he did. Hats off guys.

Behind the spoiler are the pics and making of from the ultralisk cake thread. As a joke, I told Geoff I would make him an ultralisk-shaped cake in honor of the premiere of WCG Ultimate Gamer. Ok, OP has been updated for your voting pleasure. I finally got all those polls under control! I had to get rid of the old votes though, so please vote anew if you already did!
Thanks guys, and again, sorry for the delay.

What is the difference between the Master Baker award and the WCG ultimate Baker?
And btw, you forgot the tetris cake and starry night cheesecake. You should link the spoiler in my post above into the OP

Could OP possibly change so it says wadis reavercake instead of ZooG? He just posted it for me since I was a lurker and didn't have an account.

Seconded!
With more organization some of the mods were saying they'd offer up some prizes I think With the kind of dedication some of the tl.net people displayed here.. that wouldn't be a bad idea!
props to the people who baked for this!

With that said I've enjoyed this "season" a lot. Hats off to the people who made the cakes, you're amazing!

Too bad solar[i.c] didn't make the poll, he did an awesome job. And geez the dickerdoodles need more love! They totally owned the "funsies" :p Great contest by the way! I'll do my best to submit something if there's a second round.

How do the SC cakes even have votes in the Non-SC poll? :/

I have completely missed this thread!
You guys are awesome. I love seeing all the little teamliquid families.
Now I have to convince my girlfriend and son to help me make a cake!
I am thinking Defiler + plaguuu. We'll see =).

Yea it is kinda dumb, but its almost unfair to put only some cakes into some polls and leave others out. So just put them all in and ignore the ones that are clearly SC units/bldgs. The biggest question though is why people are actually voting for the SC stuff. That's stupid
