hihi.
Every Tuesday me and about 7 others meet at a mutual friends house for a poker game.
anyway, long story short I really don't know how to play a mid pocket pair in any position. The table has a fair mix of aggressive and passive players.
please don't link me to liquid poker (even though I just did in my own post :o ) or say something like "play the player not the hand"

play the player not the hand
edit: On a more serious note, I'm bad at poker so all I can really say is gl getting good advice here. :o

theres so many variances on how and when to play a mid pocket pair and in what position. If theres a raise and a check raise in front of you, you probably shouldnt be playing unless you feel weakness. If anything, raise with your hand at the start to see where you fair amongst the others and to get a read.

Honestly an impossible question to answer without knowing: How many big blinds deep are you playing? What has happened before your turn to act (ie did someone raise? did someone limp? etc) How many players are you/what position are you in......
Like really, your question is waaaaaaaaaaay too vague ;p
To make a starcraft analogy.. It's like asking "what do I do after I fast expand?" without specifying your race, the matchup, or what you've seen your opponent do.

ok ok well im obviously going to try and steal the blinds if im in late position, and if im short stacked late game im probably going all in.
the problem i have is that if i call in an early position and gee the flop theres almost certainly gonna be one or two over cards in which case im probably behind (providing most people would call the BB too). If I raise and get called I'm probably behind, at best I'm in a coinflip.
assume im not in too much danger of being blinded out:
Should i fold to any raise infront of me? what should i do if im first to act?
edit: oh crap that was my 500th post.

Should i fold to any raise infront of me? - This is up to how you have read how this player has been playing his hands, how big of a bet he made, if he bet pre-flop, what the flop looks like and on and on and on. This is another impossible question. That's why pros are pros, they have these instincts. If you watch Daniel Negreanu play, he a lot of times calls the other players hand to the number and suit.
what should i do if im first to act? if you check with over cards on the board, you're either trapping or showing signs of weakness. Most likely the other guy is gonna think you're weak and bet.. then you'll be back to problem number 1. You should raise to see how strong of a hand you really have.. with 2 over cards on the board and a check raise to you, he probably has you beat.

asking poker questions on TL.net instead of asking them on LP.net is like asking for a starcraft strategy on GG.net instead of TL.net

renegade, thanks for the advise. i was actaully asking those questions in respect to pre flop, not on the flop, but it seems good advise none the less. the video was very helpful aswell.
I think im going to try and get to the flop as cheaply as possible and hope for a set or 3 undercards then go from there.
Taurent, the reason i asked on TL rather than LP is because i have no experience with LP, i dont know the user base, the forum rules/system/etiquette etc, whereas i have a fair idea of the TL ones. Asking for anything on GG.net is foolish.

intrawebz microstakes poker is simple - open raise/call a raise/fold to 3bet. If you raise, cbet against nits. Even with mid pairs the best you can do is setmine (try to catch 3rd on flop). Any other play is totally dependant on reads...

22-99 just limp early game i'd say, maybe call a small raise with 77+ TT+ is standard raise

In fact, your only plays should be limp, flat call, and fold. Never bet or raise.

This is like asking "Hey I play StarCraft, sometimes I play python. Could you give me the perfect strategy to play on python?"
I think you would get much better replies if you were to describe a game that you and your friends have played before. Maybe pick one hand and tell us how you played it. Otherwise your just going to get a bunch of weird comments, like Chefs.
