I believe the fact that D2 has held so well for so many years has to be attributed to how great its systems are designed. You have to appreciate the effort put into thinking out the difficulty and character progression so there's always some challenge yet it doesn't feel unsurmountable or too easy. The item design is one of the best ever - although, personally, I would for example remove "unthematic" affixes from certain items (because seeing necro wands with + attack rating and +% dmg makes me sad) and tone down runewords to be more in line with the uniques - just the fact that your standard enchanted items can be more desirable than rare, set or unique ones is amazing.
But really, apart from the runewords being too strong all the qualms I might have with items, stats (energy not being useful), or almost any system in the game is pretty much just nitpicking.
It's no surprise that proponents of D3 can be angry with it, seeing how there you had maximum power at a whim with no downsides. You can respec into "meta of the month" build at any time without sacrificing anything for it and all the progression really boils down to: 1. Go up grifts until you're no longer one-shotting everything 2. If you're no longer one-shotting go level below and grind it until you get the same gear but with better stats so you can one-shot higer grifts 3. Rinse and repeat
I don't know, maybe around rift 100+ this formula changes but I didn't really have the patience to go that high and it didn't really seem to change at all. Also, when you're doing hundreds of billions of damage the game looks very much like a joke. I remember I was doing one of the act bosses on Torment 11 or 13 difficulty (that's like Hell times x in D2) and I didn't even get to see him as my random meteor (passive skill that drops meteors at random from time to time around me) killed him before he showed on the screen and his entry dialogue was still playing when I was looting the corpse. What's the point? Where's the fun?

Also a cube recipe to change the color of gems. Not sure what to do with 1 perfect topaz and 10 perfect saphir gems when I want a mf armor (4 perfect topaz at one armor).

I suggest keeping them and then you can make some nice trades when you have quite a lot of PGs. Because PGs have their uses in other cube recipes so people would trade some items they don't need for a bunch of PGs.

Gems can be used to roll Charms.
3 Perfect Gems (of any type) + 1 Magic Item = 1 New Random Magic Item of the Same Type

I must say the way they implemented queues is absolutely atrocious. Wait times are incredibly long (145->86 in 17 minutes just now) and if you happen to crash during the game you go back to the end of line...
I knew they had problems with servers but never thought it was this bad.

You're saying servers, but the problem is just one server. The singleton is the problem and buying more servers isn't going to help them.
I'm starting to wonder how much of it is self inflicted with no more region locking. Their bottle neck in the global singleton instance. If they could have a singleton for each region like old battlenet instead of global that seems like it could solve most of their problems. Problem is you can't really go back to region locking.

Anyone else been having consistent lag problems the last few days? Not bad lag or getting disconnects, just consistent little hiccups
Also my only real complaint with the remake is it seems like there is a lack of connection between your character's weapon(s) and hitting the mob you're targeting, maybe it's just the lag thing but even before the last few days I've been having real trouble looking at the screen and seeing that yes I am hitting this mob. My weapon will swing and other than looking at the health bar or seeing the mob fall over dead I am not sure I am actually hitting this mob. Original D2 I never felt like this was happening

There definitely is some disconnect with the melee animations (like mobs dying even though you've already moved to a different mob).

ive definitely noticed the game is having a lag problem the last few days. mobs are teleporting to me, game feels like it has frame drops, skills are less responsive (teleport is slower now if you click for each teleport rather than hold)

Yep. They've been regularly down for hours at a time on every platform, but console has gotten screwed far harder than PC users.
On PC you can get in sometimes by changing region, but then you have to live with 200ms+ ping and constant rubber bands which is a good way to get to the save quit button when you TP on top of a fanatacism pack of fetish. Fine for summon necro, but not much else.

Fine for summon necro, but not much else. Summon Necro still teleports at the top of the "stack" so they take all the damage at the moment of landing, so no, that is not the case. This happened to me yesterday when I walked down into WSK and while I was still stacked with my summons and merc, I got swarmed by a pack of Extra Strong + Extra Fast Undead Dolls which also had Might, but I wasn't sure if the Might was from their pack or an adjacent one. Literally loaded into death, GFG.

seems like things are getting worse as opposed to better with time....

I was planning on getting D2 for the switch since there isn't any way to play it on my Mac. Does it at least work in single player right now?

1. 1 minute between games time. If I load a character, realize I'm put my mara's somewhere, and go through 3 other characters looking for it, it'll be 5 minutes before I can finally get into game. Either have a menu where you can just do inventory/equipment management from the character screen, or else get rid of the game creation timer.
2. Queues. The position in queue is almost meaningless, and the time you have to wait is pretty asinine. Taking 10+ minutes to login is quite frankly stupid.

The position in queue is almost meaningless, and the time you have to wait is pretty asinine. Taking 10+ minutes to login is quite frankly stupid. What's most frustrating about the 1 minute in between games thing is that if you try to join a game but mistype the password, or even if you try to host a game that is already hosted (which in some cases I strongly suspect isn't actually true), then you have to wait that minute anyway - even though you didn't actually join/play a game. Just *trying* to do so is enough to trigger that delay. That's absurd. For example, I use a relatively unique alphanumeric naming structure which is AAA## and I always pick numbers like 58 and 93 (and the letters aren't AAA they are three unique letters that are uncommon, not ABC or XYZ or CAR or MFS or something). But it still tells me that the game already exists? Suuure...
About the queue, that number is indeed meaningless. They expect me to believe that it takes 30 minutes for 180 people to crash out of the game? That's not my experience. Also, they expect me to believe that the amount of people who want to play vs. the amount of people allowed on the servers is always 10-300 more? Is it regional or something? 10-300 more players who are just in my metropolitan area or something? There is no way there are only 10-300 people waiting to play D2 globally.
|
the queue number is definitely not a global thing. if you try and connect to americas it will show a different number to when you connect to asia. so the queue may or may not be there depending on the timezone for the server youre trying to log into and the number will be drastically different. ive never seen americas queue go above 400 but ive seen asia go above 700. kinda makes sense if you consider the potential population of players.
i dont know if its the new patch, but for some stupid reason my queue number hasnt budged for 30 mins straight. literally didnt drop a digit

Shit is addicting. Hits those reward centers OD.
I was approaching burn out about a week and a half ago, then I went on vacation for 4 days with no PC, then I got slammed by work. The high I got from doing my first Countess run today was alarming, it's like I went on a t-break from weed and smoked a blunt for the first time in a month haha.
