On August 03 2008 01:13 bluemanrocks wrote: what genre(s) do you like? because ive ACTUALLY seen more than 3/4 of the movies posted in this thread, most of which are meant specifically to be obscure. other than indie/cult films, because most of my suggestions for top quality ones have already been made. 4 months 3 weeks 2 days, lives of others, hidden, head-on are all good european movies. i dont really know about "obscure", but theyre good. bolero/the red violin if youre into european movies and classical music. a personal favorite in general is the usual suspects. its an independent film, its a classic, and its AWESOME. also: pulp fiction, apocalypse now, se7en, american beauty, eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, dr. strangelove, donnie darko, amadeus, the graduate, shaun of the dead, crash/hotel rwanda, and garden state are suggestions that come to mind. also requiem for dream, kill bill 1 and memento, though i didnt like those myself. also, cult films not already mentioned: edward scissorhands, rocky horror picture show, clockwork orange, sin city. in theaters now (in the us, dunno about elsewhere) are a handful of good movies: wall-e was great, kung fu panda was cute, wanted was action-y, and of course the dark knight was pretty epic. also encounter at the end of the world if youre into documentaries. also the new hulk and hellboy 2 were decent action movies IMO. then there are series with the obvious big ones being: indiana jones, lotr, star wars, jurassic park, and harry potter if you like the books. also james bond is kind of a series but more of an endless chain. P.S. IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN MAMA MIA IT'S THE MOST RIDICULOUS MOVIE EVER. EVERYONE IN THE THEATER LAUGHED SO HARD EVERY TIME PIERCE BROSNAN SANG. ahem. oh, and the godfather "series" also. duh. other movies that rereading this post has reminded me of for one reason or another: manhattan, toy story, glory, platoon, forrest gump, rainman, superman, titanic, alladin, adaptation, straw dogs, children of men, chinatown, happy feet, million dollar baby, the philadelphia story, the remains of the day, saving private ryan, the goodfellas, the truman show, some like it hot, time bandits, rear window, notorious, the last picture show, alien, pretty woman, shrek, men in black, gladiator, oh another series is the die hard series (1 > 4 > 2 > 3 though thats subject to change as the one ive seen most recently always jumps to the top). dont think i said citizen kane yet. also, casablanca. those are kind of for reference. lives of others, crouching tiger hidden dragon. theres a LOT of movies, and i have a list which is 28 pages of movies worth seeing (IMO), but i realized that i could be totally off in my suggesting because i dont really know your taste in movies. maybe what are youre favorites and least favorites, and what kinds (genres) do you generally like? I'm honestly ok with any genre, my favorite movies are being john malkovich, demonlover, inland empire, I guess I'm a david lynch fan. And I've seen 90% of the movies you recommended except for some of the classics. I guess I like movies that you have to watch at least two times, something like "swimming pool" etc. But it has to be good.

Human traffic Some classic anime ( ghost in the shell, stuff by miyazaki ... ) O Brother Fargo To Live ( this film is awesome but well you Chinese, and you probably know it ^^ ) Infernal Affairs ( same comment than before, btw it is the original version of the Departed and it is better imo ). Brassed Off ( sad ) Trainspotting Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter... and Spring Less mainstream ( at least outside France/Belgium ) : Bernie ( i dont know if there is an English translation ) Man Bites Dog The two last films are about crazy people and are uber funny if you like dark humor and have some references ( the Petit Gregory cocktail ^^ ) Dont watch man bites dog is you cant stand strong graphic violence ( NC-17 :O ) . http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Man_Bites_Dog_(film) Btw you should just make a super list of films you have already seen because people will still tell you the same films over and over.
