Edit: Dems, on the other hand, are facing a similar issue at an earlier stage in the process, so I hope that something a bit more heterogeneous emerges there, say a coalition of broad support that includes folks focused on at least one of a handful of issues like environment, labor, finance/taxation.

But it will all have to wait until Trump is out of office. Nothing is getting done while that man is in the White House.

Unjustified "states of emergency" is a tried and trusted way to destroy democratic institutions. I see nothing funny about this! It's true. Theres a reason our constitution contains no clause providing for its suspension.

It's a Thursday, so does that mean that Trump is pro-choice? Or pro-life? Or pro-life + criminal charges for mothers who have abortions? Or pro-life + blaming the doctors and not the mothers? He's flip-flopped on abortion so many times that it's hard to keep track. This man's word has no value. https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/535441553079431168 Trump is an irrelevance. It's the public embracing of his actions that's the problem. On this site most of the main Conservative posters heartily endorsed Trump using a state of national emergency to override Congress. Figures in the media have done the same (though that seems a bit more muted). That's the dangerous part. Once the standard becomes 'if my side's doing it it's okay' then the entire system is on brittle ground. We've already seen in this presidency that the whole issue with government checks and balances is that the President gets to appoint who is in charge of them. All the machinery meant to keep the President in line can be turned to protecting him. America's got such a history of interaction with failed states and tyrannies, you'd think by now more of the populace would see the warning signs. But I know that's rhetorical. Most of the populace aren't politically engaged and don't do research. You're heading towards a very dangerous place. Still, should be a decent talking point in 2020. The 'dealmaker in chief' couldn't handle the basic process of making a deal with Congress and had to cheat.

I hope the court system and maybe Senate does its job on this, and fast! I would love "gundeath" state of emergency in the future in the face of the Republicans, that is actually a very real problem!

I know he thinks 'signature on something = job done' but even he must understand how this makes the emergency look?
