I like BackHo, but JulyZerg just saved him from a 3-0 final against Best. But if BackHo was a canditate for a Royal Road, then I'll root for him.
But for now, GO JULYZERG! Get that Golden Mouse.

ANYONE REALIZE THIS MONTH IS JULY? :D

Was Sea in the OSL? Because then he's my vote for the Sync missing in action award. I'm going to get some hate for hating on Sea, I can feel it.
Regardless, great writeup Plexa.

I think you underplay just how far BackHo was ahead in game 1. Julys opening needed to do damage to be worth it and BackHo read it perfectly and countered it perfectly. PvZ on 3 bases and 2 gas each with the Protoss up by 35 psi is essentially over. BackHo had his 3rd cannoned and could have just retreated his zealot reaver to there and settled down to macro. On an equal base count there was no need to attack and his advantage could only increase. BackHos attack in game 1 threw away a won game. You make BackHo sound like a bad player who had no chance against July, rather than a player who put himself into a very strong position against July and then did something incredibly retarded. I think the skill required to get equal bases with July and 35 psi ahead deserves some recognition.

I think the skill required to get equal bases with July and 35 psi ahead deserves some recognition. July was never out of contention in that game at any point. Yes Backho got himself into level footing with July when he took his third (but was completely helpless against mutalisks) but thats nothing. As with all of his other PvZ's Backho had zero sense and marched out and wastes his units in a pathetic fashion. Having sense in the matchup, and knowing what to do once you have the freedom is part of being good in the matchup - just getting to level footing under zero pressure means nothing, any B level protoss could do that. And indeed, Backho followed up by proving that he has B class PvZ and wasted his units appropriately.
His unit combination was off, His unit positions was off, His sense was off,
Backho was indeed the lesser player and July dealt to him.
I sincerely doubt that Backho would have been able to Hold his third for long against July; seeing as July started to power on the units just as Backho broke out. Two or three cannons would have been nice to defend; but once those were down there was nothing Backho could do about losing his units seeing as they were reaver/zealot.
July's opening did not need to deal any damage for him to gain an advantage. Indeed there was nothing that July's opening could do to pressure at all; all he could do was camp. Indeed he did delay the 3rd for a while, but not by a lot. July's opening was designed to stall for time while he got his 3rd/4th online - if that was a serious contain there would have been many more lurkers there with overlords. If he tried to pressure he would've gone around the back to do so.
I'll give credit where it's due, and Backho's PvZ does not deserve credit for something any scrub should be able to muster.
EDIT: oh yea, Backho was only 35 psi ahead before July started making an army (the calm before the storm so to speak). By the time July was hitting 80 Backho was at 100 (just before the first big fight). The screenshot caught backho just after a wave of units came out, and just before july started his batch. But ultimately the gap wasn't as big as you're saying and July was definitely still in the game
EDIT2: In fact, July's build was brilliant. The three lurkers force Backho to invest heavily into a robo/obs to counter it. Backho did perfectly counter it and sunk a lot of gas into getting fast observers and as a consequence his army had a wrong unit mix (ie zeal/reaver). By 'feinting' a hardcore lurker assault and switching to Mutalisk/Hydra July perfectly capitalized on Backho's exhausted gas supply - i mean there's only so much a guy can do off one geyser right? And storm/archons was certianly out of the question
July put the gas squeeze on Backho, abuse the fact, and went away laughing after the fact
holy shit july is a genius o.o i didn't see that until i thought about why backho's unit mix was all wrong and had 0 gas units. What a brilliant build to capitalize on the map

Love your articles, Plexa, keep up the good work!
I find it funny how BackHo's only win was a cheese. It clearly shows the skill difference between the two. Sorry to be biased towards July, but seriously, he's an old schooler that will bring back a lot of happy fans to starleague if he wins. JULYZERG HWAITING~!

Ah good ol julyzerg.... I hope he gets stomped by best

Nice article! Long live the God of War ~~
But I really feel you and many others are underestimating Backhos' play. A guy in the semifinals of OSL does not suck, _especially_ not nowadays. He won vs jangbi for example...
And in the series vs July I if anything got the feeling that backhos's mechanics, and especially his micro was way ahead of July's and that the only thing keeping tushin in the games was his better game sense. (and game sense prevailed just like it should )
As kwark said Backho was destroying july in game one until his game sense failed him and he missed the muta switch.
And in game 4 he was fighting a lost game from the moment he miss-timed his cannons (or more likely july manipulated the timing to make him miss) and he absolutly HAD to cut some corners in order to get back into the game. The guardians were the perfect choice and he got raped. But even so whatching his army just plowing through that huge lurker wall and rallied _cracks_ from 6-8 hatches destroying 6 o'clock and continuing into the third... I am quite sure july would have lost that game if not for the initial mutas.
And don't write off the loss in game 3 as a BO loss either, any zerg opening execpt for maybe 9hatch 9pool is a micro war vs 9/9 gate and july lost.
but again great article please keep writing them

Agreed. Having already watched the games, sometimes reading these battle reports gives you a better insight of what the players were actually doing. And like Plexa said after he made that long writeup on this page, he realized even more of july's tactics even after the fact.
That being said, I hope July gives us a night to remember after the games =)
