The new generation that has never played BW before. Every new game that shows up in the bnet launcher will have tons of people trying it out.
Exactly. Matchmaking alone makes such a big difference. Simply having to click on a few buttons is just a quality of live feature no game these days can't have if it wants to generate an audience. Higher resolution graphics also surely help a ton. Lot of things which could make it successful (enough)
You overestimate the size of playerbase interested in rts games.
I don't think so. This doesn't need to pull the numbers of a AAA title where lots and lots of people work on for years.

If it doesn't pull enough number then what's the point? We can discuss about how many is enough but I very much doubt that this new BW would retain much of the players that decide to try it at all except the game is heavily streamlined even then I doubt it.

Not even the "overly flirty Flash" thread got 10 pages.

Brood War has as much of a chance of making a come back as Led Zeppelin.

The point is that "enough" isn't as high as you think it is imo. This wouldn't be a project with massive amounts of costs attached to it. Fairly low costs most likely with a fairly big potential in korea and even in the west there surely are people who would try bw if it wasn't so inaccessible. Will people keep playing it? Who knows, the game is pretty good even if it has tough mechanics. The goal surely isn't to beat the popular games these days

It might be low cost if they only adjusted a few things, and maybe it kicks a lot of people to just buy to play the campaign again. We can't likely know why Blizzard decided to do this until we get an official interview, maybe management just loves StarCraft franchise.
If it has a ton of players though, its not like Blizzard is going to make it a "pay to play" so if people keep playing they'd lose money on servers i'd assume...

Yeah, same for me, and the reason why I can't really play BW now unless I would never play SC2 again t.t
How about just setting your SC2 hotkeys to be the same as BW default ones, as your SC2 ones are customizable? (boom problem solved).

In conclusion, Blizzard is Satan.

Just kidding, I want this to be good, but given Blizzard's track record, I highly doubt they are going to do anything other than appeal to SC2/Overwatch/Hearthstone/WoW players and if you think they are going to try to stay true to the original Brood War and what we (as a community) think makes the game great, you're in for huge disappointment. I'm trying not to be pessimistic, as I love this game more than anything. But if this ends up splitting the community because their philosophy of "not changing gameplay" doesn't involve bug fixes, same resolution, or control group selection, I will personally take a shit and mail it to Bobby Kotick.
This is exciting news if its real i think brood war could use an update and it'd be a thrill for the classic players to see the game re released with new graphics, brood war hasn't seen an update since the release of brood war expansion pack itself to support star crafts initial release. Man made mods like ICCUP and fish, other private servers have their weaknesses too a complete battlenet overhaul compatable cross platform would be welcome news for broodwar players, the large grey metal look is definitely a 1998 relic that will look old to most players in 2017
I'd prefer 2 ladder modes. 100% 1998 mode (including 4:3, sprite limitations). But the other mode would be 100% SC2 shortcuts (MBS, smartcasting, etc) with the unbalanced anti-Protoss mess it would create.
And custom mode should include individual dipswitches/toggles for each SC2 style shortcut. If you want to play a casual BW match with your friends with the convenience of just auto-mine (Zerg favoured!) and 16-9 aspect ratio, for example, then you could.

This is my dream.
I have no expectations it will be fulfilled.
But who could argue with this?
I agree completely with you.
Nothing much to say. I really like your Idea and I don't see what would be so bad about 2 different modes as long as we have more people playing the game.
I just have little faith into Blizzard given their track record
Blizzard isn't going to release a game without an early announcement and plenty of advertising. Marketing is a huge part of their business, and a surprise release makes little sense.
Last time the rumors were that it'd be announced at Blizzcon. It's probably not even being made, let alone out in a few weeks.

Yeah I can't Imagine Blizzard selling a game with all the 1998 fun (MBS, automine, smartcast, decent pathfinding, scarab AI (can you believe that back in 1998 I was blown away by SC pathfinding ? Well compared to age of empire or total annihilatio,...)).
Maybe we'll have a "legacy mode" but I doubt it will get much attention. So if they mordenize the game they will need to adjust balance, so how they'll handle it ?
- BW style : adjust shortly after the game's out, once and for all, then leave it to the mapmakers (maybe giving them better tools to handle balance and thus we get more varied maps ?)
- SC2 style : try to control balance and metagame (as if it is possible), loose tons of employes working time and ruin the game with rock, paper, sicsors units bulshit ? ( I might be slightly biased )

Edit: Unless that means they'll include the MM'ing of B.net 2.0 and the daily tournaments then I'll finally accept it but it's still a POS UI/Service compared to 1.0.
Yep. I kinda want to be excited for this, but B.net 2.0 singlehandedly destroyed all the enjoyment I got out of SC2, and I can't imagine it wouldn't do the same for BW:HD.
Yes B.net 1.0 please, HOWEVER I'd love to have Brood War added to the b.net launcher
Lot of people saying that it won't bring a ton of people, or won't hold them..
Well, I'd be happy with an extra few thousand foreign players that find the game as beautiful as we do. There's a reason we keep playing.. not because we are afraid to break on to something new, because believe me, I've tried new games, but because it's an amazingly well constructed competitive arena for very intelligent and strong minded individuals are able to compete safely
Even a few thousand extra players should bump the BW scene atleast 5++ years... can't ask for immortality when the world might not even be here tomorrow.
There is a whole new world with the virtual reality programming that is being produced, as well as the BW AI that people are working on... I've said it before.. Imagine 1:1 Fighting Spirit, but Virtual Reality zooming in on units and battles etc.....
Maybe cell phones will be even more advanced than PCs, and we can play a ROM of BW on our high tech cell phones and play online vs other interested players.
Maybe there's a future for BW that we don't even see coming..? I can only hope we all make it happen. I'm surely not into developing anything but I would definitely consider funding tournaments or backing the foreign scene in some way if I saw it being a worthy investment in the future.
