Well, yeah. But then again the actual matches are played on a P2P basis. The actual servers don't do much of anything and could probably be run on standard consumer grade hardware. Closing those servers would carry unnecessary badwill just to save what, $500/year in electricity and maintenance costs? It's peanuts to them and probably gains them money from being seen as good guys who care about their consumers. Moving everything to bnet 2.0 seems much more likely than closing bnet 1.0 with no replacement. Also they're obviously not using the same "ancient original bnet servers", you think they still have servers from 1998 running the show? They've obviously migrated that shit to more efficient modern hardware multiple times by now. | ||

So true, it's as if people have forgotten all about what splitting the player base means and the detrimental effects it brings, especially to a relatively fragile community such as BW. And I never understood the need or even desire to bring any e-sport to a more "global" level at the cost of the more competitive scene. If the best players are Korean, let me watch Koreans. Those kinds of tertiary factors don't contribute, and can detriment *cough* a game like StarCraft. However, there needs to be something said about the potential growth resulting from a more global source of funding and player talent. Unlikely as hell in this case, of course, but it's still there. I'm sure if foreigners could easily donate balloons (didn't I see something about that recently?) then at least some of them would. That's just a small example. Also, that's a bit harsh on inc, I don't know what he did to deserve that lol ): BW hasn't been known for that kind of mentality for about a decade at least. Check out the infamous SotG episode where he's teaming up with DjWheat bullying Destiny for daring to suggest SC2 isn't perfect.
