Regardless of the situation, we will still action upon "dead game" comments. As this is a sensitive issue for SC2 fans, please do not come into this thread and talk about SC2 players switching over to BW. This thread is also not about bashing Blizzard, David Kim, or the WCS system. |
I think we all knew this day was coming. You had to be in denial to not see it.
So many people spent so much time talking about how much better the game was becoming with HOTS and LOTV, while it was bleeding players and viewers, they were just in denial. The game wasn't getting better, it was getting worse, especially relative to other games.
The reason there is no Pro League is the same reason so many people including me, stop regularly playing ladder: the game simply isn't as good as it used to be. People keep bringing up these odd arguments about how the RTS genre dying is what killed SC2, ect... the reason is much simpler, SC2 died because it didn't keep up with the times.
In an era of game design that focuses on reducing player frustration and maximizing fun, SC2 literally did the opposite with anti-fun game design choices.

Here is a excerpt:
Power Without Gameplay This is when we give a big benefit in a way that players don't find satisfying or don't notice. The classic example of this is team benefit Auras. In general, other players don't value the aura you give them very much, and you don't value it much either -- even though auras can win games. As a REALLY general example, I would say that players value a +50 armor aura only about twice as much as a +10 armor aura... Even though +50 is 5x better. Another example would be comparing a +10 damage aura to a skill that every 10 seconds gives flaming weapons that make +30 damage to all teammates next attack (with fire and explosions!). I am pretty sure that most players are WAY more excited about the fiery weapons buff, even though the strength is lower overall.
The problem with using a "power without gameplay" mechanic is that you tend to have to 'over-buff' the mechanic and create a game balance problem before people appreciate it. As a result, we tend to keep Auras weak, and/or avoid them altogether, and/or pair them on an active/passive where the active is very strong and satisfying, so that the passive is more strategic around character choice. For example, Sona's auras are all quite weak -- because at weak values they ARE appreciated properly.
Is there any better example of an overbuffed power without gameplay mechanic than pylon overcharge? Literally press F and click on pylons to hold off early timings. Is it satisfying for Protoss? Not at all. Is it overbuffed? Most certainly.
But what I am most sad and disheartened by is that Team Liquid, after this all time, still can't lay the blame at the feet of the person it belongs. Thus, in the end, Team Liquid is partially responsible for what happened. They should have put their weight behind a new design team long ago, but instead, during the LOTV beta I was asked to tone down my criticism of Blizzard as TL attempted to get Blizzard to change course on the new economy. How'd that work out?
Everyone involved needs to hold themselves accountable for their actions, or lack of actions. This didn't have to happen like this, but did because of the choices that people involved with SC2 made.
Or we can just pretend this was fate, and remain in denial. But just remember, that path is how we got to where we are now.

fuck.
SC2 is just - it's not good enough. It's good and it has good attributes, and I've had a blast with it. It just can't sustain a real competitive scene and fanbase like BW could.
Thanks for all of the amazing hours and entertainment, SPL.
RIP CJ

I don't know what to say. I feel like I just lost one of my best friends.

StarCraft could suffer no greater blow than the loss of ProLeague.
I could never relate to people who watched sports games and followed favoured teams closely until I got hooked into ProLeague.
|
As long as there are people who care nothing is dead. This is not at all good news but the only time I watched proleague with enthusiasm was when EG-TL joined and played. Otherwise I would watch it if it was on when I checked Teamliquid . Maybe it was not a sustainable format . I doubt kespa made a business decision on a whim. I hope this is not the end.

I'm almost scared at how depressed I am over this. I shouldn't care this much but I do

Guys chill, this is just the dark ending. Let this die out like it should so we dont have some half rotten RTS competitive scene. When the void is there and the time is right, the competitive scene will bloom and be incandescent. Just understand loss is part of the cycle...

I which I could, no way I close an eye tonight.

Blizzard should have sponsored proleague instead of pumping money into welfare league. Bad business decision.

Well this bounds to happen sooner or later. As for people think bw is coming back... I don't think it will really grow to be as big as before so long as there is no new players from the younger generation join the fray, the game will probably just be in its current stat and stay alive for nostalgia. As for SC2, maybe it's time for the foreign scene to keep it alive. I am curious what Blizzard plans for the next year's WCS

Supporting them to do what? Proleague's gone (and the teams with it, so there's no reasonable way to start an alternative team league), and the individual tournaments that Koreans can actually play in (both of them) are probably dead as well. Are they just going to play on the ladder all day?
|
This was insensitive comment. I apologize about it.
|
SC2 was pretty much foreign based already after it failed to establish itself in Korea. The game IS much, much better than it ever was before, but Blizzard needs to find a way to reinvigorate the player base somehow. CS:GO was having similiar troubles for a while, but it bounced back higher than it ever was before. I think and hope the same thing can be done for SC2.
This is the shittiest news in the history of the game (SC2) though, by far.

GSL should come back next year + no way they keep the region lock, so if WCS continue there is always that, and also online tourney if those are still around.
