I've watched the whole series up to the season 4 finale over the course of a couple of weeks now, and I've got pretty mixed feelings. Season 2 was just awful at times, and was basically a never-ending penis measuring contest between two meatheads who were incapable of making even the slightest logical and good decision (made worse by Lori, who is the most annoying character I've ever seen in any series, ever). I hated it when they killed off Dale, who was by far the best character in the series and the only one that still acted like a human being, not a wild animal. Season 3 was slightly better, but again there had to be a penis-measuring contest, but this time less meatheady (but still lots of lives were lost due to completely nonsensical decision-making. Season 3 also ramped up the violence to almost unnecessary levels, which took away a lot of the tension present in the first two seasons. Instead of running away from the zombies, they now just ran at them with knives (incl a 12-year-old with barely any muscle in his body who survived getting shot in the stomach not even a few weeks ago). I didn't really know why there were still zombies in the first place, they were hardly a threat anymore and if people still got caught by them, it was due to their own stupidity.
Also, can anyone explain to me how, in season 3, Rick's group suddenly had silenced guns and assault rifles (i.e. very specialised military equipment) whereas in season 2 they left with barely any bullets in their weapons and hardly any fuel in their cars?
I get that the authors probably want to portray what humanity is like once it's faced with certain death and impossible odds, but I highly doubt that we'd lower ourselves to the level of animalistic behaviour of the majority of Rick's group. Humans are social animals by nature who will form groups to find safety in numbers. They will not scare away others just because they may pose a threat. Meatheads like Shane and Rick in season 2 will not be tolerated as leaders because they cause more tension than they solve problems. Just imagine the people from the Prison forming one big group with the Woodbury Folk and the soldiers further down the road. They could have turned the whole area around Woodbury or the Prison into an impregnable fortress. But no, instead we have two groups of idiots who'd much rather kill and torture each other than come together and find a way to survive.
Don't get me wrong, I like the series - I wouldn't have watched it if I didn't - but sometimes the stupidity of some of the characters makes suspending my disbelief very hard.

The show skips winters (in between seasons 2 and 3, and in between season 3 and 4) since filming occurs during the spring/summer. So you could assume that all that ammo and equipment just came from scavenging during the winter. It's a shame because winter is one of the most interesting scenarios you could put your characters in.

I was in the same boat where I caught up on all of this over the past month or so with my gf. Honestly, the tail end of season three is the only one where I was just like, that's fucking stupid. Really only the last two episodes there.
Overall, I mostly liked it.
The silencers and other shit is just assumed to have been scavenged when we don't see. I don't think that's a reach. I also think the actions of most of the chars are realistic, short of the governor mowing everyone down in 3 but even then, I don't think it's really out there.

I'm going to cut you off there, because I think that right here is where a lot of your trouble lies.
Between the end of Season 2 and the Start of Season 3, 8 months have gone by. It's mentioned one time during the first episode of Season 3.
Watched last episode. Good one and overall good season. If Part 2 of season 4 is on par it may end up being the best season imo with the first. And we all know how terrible part 2 of season 3 was so let's not get too excited I guess.
Damn what a relief that episode was. At first I was SOOOO worried they were going to redo season 3 again, but everything got done in one episode good job. And on top of that: The governor is finally over. THEY ARE FINALLY OUT OF THE PRISON fuck yeah.
Hershel's dead was one of my favorite character Guess I'm back to digging for Daryl.
Series is still full of what the fuck/this is dumb/etc. moments but by season 4 you're supposed to be accustomed to it. At least this season so far offered good development most of the episodes and the only one I found terrible was the second or third can't remember. Zombies had a better role in the later episodes of this season but it's still pathetic and I'm still disappointed the series moved so far away from what made the first one interesting.

Black Friday is people's greed getting the best of them. Survival forces people to group together. Humans are incredibly low on the food chain when they're unarmed and in small groups.

i dunno much about black friday, but i think survival forces even worse behaviour than greed.
Especially considering that most people are utterly useless because they are weak and scared and cant even defend themselves. No one was really successful to make use of all those people in a productive way so they are mostly just a burden and a liability when they die.
You can rationalize raiding other camps by saying its either them or us that can have those supplies and who can make better use of them? the weak or the strong? The weak gonna die anyhow so you might as well take their supplies before they waste it.

People that think like you died in first few weeks so that only left "meatheads" like Shane and Rick to run the show.
What you say would be true if there was enough resources for everyone, but when there is no food, clothes or weapons producing systems in place and you cannot even hunt for food without a fear for your life from a group of zombies all your unrealistic expectations about humans fall off. Tribal wars in Africa are a reality of how it would look but worse as in Africa there are no zombies, only wild animals and a serious lack of resources.
In my experience people from rich Western countries got too soft from easy life and think that what Western culture accomplished is somehow connected with anything more than being rich and not needing to fight for survival each day. All the morals and progress fly out the window the moment all the richness disappears. Why do you think rise of crime in countries is directly connected with rise of poverty?

In fact, most of the show so far has been showing the exact opposite. There are many examples of "weak" people surviving while strong people get killed.

Because they were cowards that stayed in their house and never went out to face the new world. They did have a good excuse with pretty ill father but they would have died as soon as their father died as they didn't know shit about zombies. They got saved by Governor, as in a strong person. All the weak people in the show got saved by the stronger people that either cared enough or considered them useful enough.

One of the things Viktor Frankl talked about in his book Man's Search for Meaning is that the "weaker" (physically speaking) people who were more intellectual actually survived the Holocaust better than those who were more physically capable. One of the things we could kind of speculate is that everyone eventually got physically equal with each other, just through sheer hard work, lack of food and having to run and lift heavy stuff all day. There are some cases of people who were considered "strong" even before the zombies (Daryl, Merle, even Shane and Rick to an extent) but a lot of the people that were in their group weren't what I would consider badass. Andrea made it to season 3 and was a lawyer iirc.

Don't get me wrong, I like the series - I wouldn't have watched it if I didn't - but sometimes the stupidity of some of the characters makes suspending my disbelief very hard.
same complaints this entire thread has been filled with. but your opinion is welcome.
also, LOL at thinking people will remain civil in post apocalyptic scenarios. seriously, have you seen people during black friday?
Black Friday is people's greed getting the best of them. Survival forces people to group together. Humans are incredibly low on the food chain when they're unarmed and in small groups.
Before the rise of agriculture, small tribal groups of people was the NORMAL lifestyle of the human, often with regular conflict between other local tribes. It's like people who think like you believe our entire history started just a couple of thousand years ago.
It's amazing what a little wealth and technology can do to a species' "fitness" levels.

I'm pretty sure people don't criticize "regular conflict", but "batshit insane leaders who want to kill everything". There's a difference.

There certainly have never been batshit crazy leaders in human history, nope, never. I mean there have been insane leaders in our life time, in RECENT history. Let alone if you can use your imagination to go back in human history, 500, 1000, 10000 years. I can't even begin to fathom the nutjobs that have controlled regions, tribes etc., the governor is probably a pussycat. There are likely warlords in central and northern Africa that would but the governor to shame existing right this very moment.
