I first heard they were making this show from travis's blog. Given the demographic of TL, I pretty sure most of us love zombies and apocalyptic situations. Hell I bet most of you have read the comic. If not you should do so immediately, and you will realize why if this show is even half as good as the comic, it will be amazing.
Why The Walking Dead is totally sweet:

Zombies. Apocalypse. Atlanta.
No superheroes or super-zombies.
Great interactions between survivors.
Asian character that is important, doesn't do kung-fu, probably doesn't have an accent, and is competent and brave, not nerdy and weak.
Men, women, children, nice people. No one is safe from zombies.
