MCMcEmcee mistook seeing this win Seattle http://www.mtgtop8.com/event?e=4837&d=227938 as meaning the only successful maverick decks were GWB despite the same player not doing as well as Shawn Yu's Nacatle version in the 2nd SCG Seattle tournament this year. Its a common mistake people who don't understand that a deck is not defined by its name, but by its cards. All he had to do was take a look at what cards are played and he would see that Knight+tutor land targets mixed with Zenith + hatebears is a very very common strategy mixed with many colors. I've seen some win by constantly reanimating Elesh Norn after discarding her to Fauna Shaman I've seen some that try to go Natural Order combo into progenitus I've seen some be Bant esque with defensive creatures, Jace, and Brainstorms I've seen some be aggressive with burn and a low curve I've seen some be pure GW And I've also seen some splash black for Thoughtseize and Deathrite Shaman. The base of their decks remain the same. Hatebears plus 1 of lands to be tutored by a Knight of the Reliquary, supported by a card package of choice be it the stoneblade package of Mystic + Jitte/Skull or Thoughtseize/Deathrite, or Punishing Fire/Grove, or etc....

Seriously it takes more than a few shared cards to jam a wide set of decks that play nothing alike into the same archetype. Also ignoring your earlier post that posted a very specific set of cards that define maverick to use a much looser definition is sweet tech. Literally every knight/gsz list is going to have tutor targets for both, that's kind of the point of playing tutors in the first place.

This was your list from pages back On November 17 2013 15:40 MCMcEmcee wrote: Yeah dark confidant, sylvan library, and green sun's zenith are such poor card draw and library manipulation... The only one that is consistenly used by Maverick is Green Sun's Zenith. Unless you think THIS is Maverick http://www.mtgtop8.com/event?e=5213&d=230054 Maverick is a Hatebear deck that uses GSZ to tutor game state specific hatebears and uses Knight of the Reliquary as a finisher, leaning on its size and tutor ability to continue the disruption. Adding Knight to an elf deck doesn't make it a maverick deck without the hatebears. 4 GSZ, 2-4 hatebears 4 Knights 3-4 land targets that totals to 9-12 cards that need to be added to an elf deck. By having Knights you'd need to up the land count on elves from the 15-17 it has to at least 22 both to be able to reach 3 mana as well as to have the lands to sacrifice to the Knight. Thats 15-20 cards needing to be changed in order for Knights and hatebears to be able to be added into an elf deck which changes a third of the deck. So yes, adding Knights and Hatebears to an elf deck would make it more like Maverick. It would also mean cutting a large chunk of the elf deck preventing it from going off making it no longer an elf combo deck as the creatures it draws will no longer be able to synergise with Heritage Druid to fuel the Glimpse of Nature combo. But I have a feeling you didn't actually think about the consequence that happens when card changes are made in a deck. So no, its not as easy as "Add Knights and Hatebears" and you have a Maverick deck because "adding Knights and hatebears" requires more than just adding 4 Knights, 4 Zeniths, and 2-4 Hatebear Targets, 2-4 Land Targets, 3-4 Wastelands, etc... Which is why I constantly have talked about adding support cards to the main cast of Maverick because Maverick's main cards take up 16 cards, 2-4 land targets, and 20-22 lands in order to have the mana to cast cards and sac to the Knight. When half the deck is already taken up by cards needed to fuel Maverick's core, you then have to add cards that support that core. This is usually 4 mana dorks (to match up with the 4gsz + 1 Dryad Arbor), 4 Mother of Runes (to protect the hatebears), and 4 Swords to Plowhsares (for removal) This means that about 40 or so cards in a maverick deck are already accounted for and about 20 or so cards can be shifted. Mother of Runes is not always needed. Reid Duke (for example) used Daze and counters in the sideboard instead of Mothers to protect his creatures. Shawn Yu used Punishing Fire and Lightning Bolts instead of mothers to gain board advantage. etc... Because how you protect your hatebears, and how you clear the path for your hatebears is arbitrary. The core remains the same. Knights + Hatebears + Zenith + Land Targets. How you support that main core changes from deck to deck. Some run thoughtseize, some run Jace, some run Mystics, etc... The core is what stays the same.

Jank includes stuff like silhana ledgewalker, quirion ranger, a giant growth that you can cast by tapping a green creature instead of paying G (its +2/+2 tho), that 2/2 elf that doesn't untap but untaps when you cast a green spell... and like 16 forests lol. It's actually quite interesting and the decision trees are fairly complex. Way more tricks than you'd expect from "green stompy" that runs like 30 creatures.

I played pauper briefly a few months back and I piloted fissure post, the deck was absurdly degenerate but I kept timing out on MTGO (that deck is so hard to play on the beta client) so I quit for a few months and now I have been getting back into the groove. Edit: I durred a card

I'm not but grind them phantom sealed boy. Also know when it's okay not to run good cards because of mana restrictions, I had a BW deck that didn't run Wingsteed Rider or Phalanx leader because I had so much black stuff and it carried me to top 8.

Do you guys have any suggestions in making the pool of cards, that it mimics a normal booster draft (minus the tendency to build around rares), or even how to organize the packs (pure random or spread it out)? I think I have at least 6~8 copies of all the uncommons, maybe 2~4 copies of each uncommon. edit: Maybe 12 commons to imitate a normal pack, and by "spread it out" I mean the quality top pick cards.
