The thing is which plot because there are about 12 running side stories that are varying levels of interesting.
I feel like the mangaka lost his magic after around vol 40 of the manga. Most of the stories just feel like fillers, I only buy it because it was an important part of my childhood, and there is only one volume a few months.

I think there has been one significant plot section(re:BO) in about 200 episodes which is an unusually long time even for Gosho.
Love the anime but stopped watching after those fucks(FUNimation Entertainment) forced them(DCTP) to stop subbing them. Not like everyone lives in NA, right?

At least they still subbed the movie. I believe they released the 16th one awhile ago.

Yeah, there's only a volume per 3 or 4 months in our country, which is such a long time to wait (And I admit, I buy it for the same reason as you, although I've already read all the chapters online ). I've always enjoyed the filler cases, but I must agree that Gosho should focus more on the main story right now, too much side stories are never good (I quit reading Naruto because of that)

Oh well...
well that is the fun of it. I totally enjoyed this when I was much younger, and I still do now. I do ask questions about the realistic aspect of the manga like yours when I read it now, but who cares seriously? Most of the manga/anime out there have the unrealistic aspects but that is not the main point. The main point here is how the cases are solved, which is pretty damn amazing and innovative. Who solves it doesn't matter.
To the main topic, welp the fillers make the whole thing quite boring after a while. I hope the main story can progress a little bit faster, although I can't even think of a proper way for Conan to get back his body, if it ever happens at all T_T
i remember being pretty surprised when i watched detective conan back in the day for liking it and some episodes being pretty fucking eerie (decapitated murder victim)
This is one of my favourite for sure. I really enjoy it when he is batting out with Kaido Kid and Hattori haha. I don't exactly enjoy those 1 episode filler, some are really bad imo. The Baker Street Movie is probably the best <3
Oh boy, I have more than 50 Detective Conan volumes on my shelf... One thing that I like is that sometimes I can even guess who the culprit is.
Some curiosities! 1 Ai was supposed to be introduced early in the story, but the editor suggested Aoyama to delay. And that's the reason why he created Heiji Hattori! Iirc the anime fucks up a little because they had showed Ai's sister storyline as if she was a normal "culprit" for a "normal" case, so when Ai was introduced they basically had to remake a very similar episode... years have passed however so I can't be 100% sure.
2 When I was younger I used to count every episode that had snow in it. That's because if we excludes episode that have something to do with skiing, this is a good way to determine how many winters have passed since the start of the series! Considering that Ran still goes to high school, this implies two possible outcomes: -some cases are flashbacks from the past, or most likely -Ran and the kids must be terrible at school and keep repeating years ^^
3 There's a Detective Conan cameo in Takahashi's "InuYasha" (another work I used to read in the past): apparently he goes on Kagome's school! I still have to find if Kagome ever appeared in DC as a cameo.

especially the bi yearly cases that have kid in it.
I think the director once said he wanted to stop the series but the fans won't let him.
Kindaichi Case Files (another super popular detective anime/manga which is more realistic) had a special anime movie featuring both detectives working together.
personally I prefer Kindaichi Case Files because while the art work isn't that good, the stories are written by two of the better detective novel writers and so the story is more serious and interesting
I've been watching Conan for like 12+ years, every few months I'd randomly some episodes then hiatus for a while then repeat lol, I'm on like ~550 still not caught up, I think we're up to 700? xD
