The game client is quite resourceintensive to be open all the time when you are on your pc, and for me as an clan organizer it would be great to have the option to be able to chat with my friends/players without having the game open all the time. If you have concerns regarding spam/harrasment, there should be an option to disable messages (temporarily).

It remembers your password and can start with Windows/Mac startup, so you just launch OS and launch game, and see no password/login fields at all. Thats usefull. Plus also nicer and more useful interface.

I already have to waste cpu-power and memory for steam, thats enough. Better get used to it, because I'm pretty sure it will eventually become standard for Blizzard games.
