In the months ahead, the game launchers for StarCraft II, Diablo III, and World of Warcraft will be automatically updated to our new desktop app for Battle.net, designed to improve the launcher experience and streamline your ability to play Blizzard games—but if you’re interested in upgrading now, you can!
The open beta test has begun, and everyone’s invited to download and install the app now in preparation for the switchover. If you’re interested in upgrading in advance, simply click the button below.
What’s this launcher update do? The new single sign-on functionality allows players to log in once to access StarCraft II, Diablo III, World of Warcraft, and the upcoming PC and Mac versions of Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft, and stay logged in for up to 30 days.
Players can also install games directly through the app and, if you choose to leave the app running on your desktop, keep them up-to-date automatically even while you’re away from your computer. Please note that it’s entirely up to you whether you wish to leave the app running—you can exit it at any time, and it will automatically re-launch whenever your standard launchers would.
Once the open beta test ends, everyone’s launcher will be updated automatically when they start up the launcher for World of Warcraft, StarCraft II, or Diablo III. Players will be auto-updated in waves over time, so the exact date you’ll get the update will vary from person to person.
Today also marks the end of our Battle.net desktop app closed beta test. If you’ve already been using the app as part of the closed beta group, you don’t need to redownload or reinstall anything—you’re already good to go. Thanks again for all of your great feedback throughout the course of our testing, and we look forward to hearing everyone’s thoughts on the open beta in the Battle.net forums.
Support Pages

Awesome, downloading now.
EDIT: Upon using it and browsing it for about 5 minutes, it looks really nice and is responsive, but it eats up almost 100K memory in the background which is quite a lot for a "log in tool".

Steam eats 100 mb of RAM too, but yeah, Steam isn't just login tool.

Downloaded, i must say that this thing looks beatiful and it is quite nice to be able to access the game without the launcher, specially now that for some reason it was getting slower and slower to load.
And it would be nice if the added a shortcut to the editor, i mean i have already an icon in my desktop but it would be nicer if i only had to use this new lancher only.

It now automatically launches Battle.net client when you launch any of Blizzard games.

Wow it looks really nice.
|
|
I hope something like this could lead to a better Battle.net.
I don't know if it could be used to create automated tournaments for Starcraft or something, but that's my dream.
As it is, it's kinda interesting. Something I'll probably use.
|
I wonder if they would ever add the older blizzard games. I don't imagine it would be hard for them to add a shortcut to all of them. I just would like the feel of a proper blizzard "portal".

Because I'm lazy to add links of all regions and all 16 languages. You can just change enGB to enUS/esES/koKR in the link or change language via client options.

It's just a box beside the big news box on the game page. If there's no one online, nothing will show.

There's no chat. If there's nobody online in that game, that box doesn't show up at all. It's a really bad implementation.

When you click on that button, what shows then?

Its still pretty bare bones but works great to launch different games and regions.
They plan to add chat via the launcher in the future.

You can't click the button lol. When you hover over it, it just shows battle.net id, status icon, game - server, and time online... basically everything you already see -.-

Is there a news post with links from Blizzard? I feel iffy about direct download from those links without an actual announcement.

The client is quite neat, very clean and one-click to play games. No chat function sucks though.

Would be nice if there was a cross game chat box for my friends list :/ cant chat to ppl online in sc2 from it
|
i would think one of the main features of this would be global chat from the client, but its not there, epic.
|
Anyone else having an issue with it just being stuck on updating agent?
|
Pretty nice they finally have this!
|
I just like the convenience of not logging in anymore.
|
When I put in my username and password, the log in button is greyed out... Checked the settings... nothing.
edit: figured it out, restarted the client and works fine.
|
once chat goes in and they can start looking at game specific stuff (parties, game invites, ladder queuing) this will be great, at the moment it's a very heavy friends list that updates your games.

Yeah, RAM is super tight these days. I am really squeezed with 8GB of ram.

I kept looking for a chat interface. Can't believe this doesn't have chat.
|
Why would I use this if there's no chat and no clan interface(bulletin boards, clan news, etc). Can you even check your own in-game profile?
|
|
there's actually a huge bunch of things they haven't added, hence why it's called beta :p
some things that are WIP
> settings
enable battle.net sounds launch battle.net minimized use proxy server for lan install games after downloading
some annoying things i don't like
so much wasted space at the top banner, all it says is games/news. likely chat should fit up there in the future, and clans or something.
if you click on your sc2 name to get your b.net id, you can't actually copy and paste it (even though if you try it looks like you can for a second). a click event should keep the b.net id open so you can copy&paste.
for some reason you have like 10 things in an option dropdown (patch notes, uninstall, repair, etc), and then randomly Redeem a Code beside the Options button. So inconsistent. should either have more things in that header section, or remove the Redeem a Code and find another place to put the Options dropdown. (i see in other games there's a "Upgrade Available" button, but i'm not sure how Redeem a Code is related to these three. The Options dropdown should be done better though still.
There are way too many external links, etc, options dropdown, reading comments.
This is getting into really anal territory, but in the list of games (WoW, D3, SC2), on the selected game with the blue square, the padding to the left is 4pixels, but the padding to the right of the square is 5pixels. Idk how I noticed that but I did LOL
Also, in the dropdown box you use to select your region, I'm not sure what the option "Live" is supposed to mean.
I'm also not a fan of how Patch Notes are fullscreen attached to the client, but not Settings. A bit more consistent would be nice.

none at all. we were just hoping there would be a cross-game chat system, but that isn't here (yet).
maybe if you want to sign in with a nicer interface, or if you switch logins between blizzard games a lot.
|
|
Its a pretty cool client, but slightly annoying if you are a SEA account holder and play on NA normally. It seems to automatically log you into sea even if your last played region was NA and I haven't noticed anywhere that will let you swap it around unless I am blind.
e. apparently its fixed now? or I was doing something wrong but now it logs in to the appropriate last used realm now regardless of selection in menu

To be honest though, 100 mb of RAM is not much. I gather most people nowadays have at least 2 GB of RAM - SC2 needs at maximum 1 - 1.2 GB of RAM anyway (on Windows 8 at least). If the client helps getting updates faster (by downloading future updates in the background, etc.), this may be worth the 100mb cost.
Also, if it disturbs anyone, you can just shut the program down.
|
Hmm it said I couldn't connect to B.net servers so I guess I'll try again tomorrow but overall I like the way that it looks.
|
if you have two account, this client will be quite troublesome. it automatically log into your account that you used for the b.net client. so if you want to log into your other account, you will have to log out after you got into the game.

The hope is that eventually it'll skip the in-game login screen and let you chat and form parties outside of the game so you don't have to keep the heavy client running just to partake in the social side of it, but it's still beta at the moment so it's just friends list/updater/feed reader.

That's basically all it does at the moment though.

blizzard is really against chat.after years of players requesting chat features and even in the new client they aren't introducing any.
|
Not a bad first effort. A couple more features like chat and this will be super useful to me.
|
I am trying to take blizzard seriously with their "Battle.Net Desktop Client" but when i saw Dota2 in game client for watching tournament, this looks like something you would give your 1 year old kid to play with.
Because i am hopelessly here till i have someone to play with Starcraft, dreaming the day that blizzard do something like dota in game client. Can even imagine how good would it be do watch Dreamhack with that....

The Battle.Net train has derailed in 2010, and all they've done since was just sending more power to the engines.

What is it with Blizzard and not implementing chats?
It is highly confusing to me, how you could think that it's a non-priority feature...

A nice feature to see who is online, now it only needs chat to be useful - and maybe an option to show people ingame that you are only in the bnet client, but not ingame, so that they can contact you. That would be nice and would ease clan administration/playing with friends etc.pp. as i am not always online ingame.

But do you really want client chat?
|
On August 13 2013 17:14 deth wrote: But do you really want client chat?
yes, why not? The game client is quite resourceintensive to be open all the time when you are on your pc, and for me as an clan organizer it would be great to have the option to be able to chat with my friends/players without having the game open all the time.
If you have concerns regarding spam/harrasment, there should be an option to disable messages (temporarily).

An honest question. If you only play starcraft is there any reason to use this?

Definitly missing the main important function of this : chat client !
However, it looks very promising =]

Well if u don't like to type in ur credentials all the time when u login into SC it is useful, since the Battle.Net Client authenticates u

Does anyone know how the authenticator works with this?

yes it works, i have one, else the client would be useless

He probably meant how. And you get asked to authenticate (atleast for the first time) when you boot up the battle.net client, and once when you get into Starcraft. But I'm assuming this happens never again if logging in from the same IP just like before.

Seems for now there is only newer games on it. Which sucks tbh. Although best thing so far is you don't need to type in passwords, once you have ticked for desktop client to remember.

No News ... just a post on TL with links...
ppl saying its linked in www.battle.net and it turns out its NOT until you download the .exe file and fill in your account information ...
... sounds legit ...
I actually want to believe but this is so weird right now °_°

Just grabbed the client, really like the clean visuals. The setting to change the functionality of the X button is also nice. I like that you can set install and download directories, but I wish it had a way to change the directory of a currently installed game. The news reader is nice too (yay comments are hidden).

Should have Battle.net App Beta option after you download it and login (or something like that). It's legit lol

From the comments it seems they are still testing it and to announce it in a month or two. Since I don't really need this all that much, I'll just wait for official release. If I needed it, I'd grab it right now, because it's certainly legit.

It's hosted on dist.blizzard.com.
Unless Blizzard sold "Blizzard.com" recently, then it's legit.

I never install WoW, I simply move the files from HDD to HDD whenever I reformat, so there is nothing in the registry.
This tool still found the game and lets me launch, excellent.

Still pretty sad they haven't implemented the chat yet, It's my only reason for using the thing at all.

Well i guess if you do an update it updates the registry?

So far so good. Looking forward to having chat implemented, hopefully before Hearthstone comes out.
EDIT: Also just noticed the quick region switch dropdown. That's pretty awesome too.

is there a way to change the orders of the icons in the games? right now i have WoW, D3, then SC2 when i want the reverse order since WoW isn't even installed.

the order of the icons represents the games rank of importance (for blizzard), there is no way you can change that
no j/k, there seems to be now way to change the order. I would also like the option to hide games i don't own/haven't installed.
And another question: What are bnet toasts?

I wish Blizzard would use the full potential a thing like this could offer. Think about it, bring the guild chat from Wow to this thing, or have SC2 group chats available with this client. Heck, you could even have it work as a launcher for SC2 games, you could challenge your friends or random people in chat to a game in SC. How cool would that be! It'd bring a whole new social aspect to the game, and you wouldn't have to be sitting in the cold and empty SC2 menus.

Hmm, it started reconfiguring game files and then said it cannot continue because I don't have 19.4GB of free space (my SSD has 15GB free atm).

Lol twitter posts = credibility. Maybe governments should use twitter to address countries.

hm...I have it. It doesn't really help my usability or accessability. Then again, I've been out of the game for the last couple of months. I just don't see how this adds value to my gameplay...

I had problems connecting to the new beta client until I flushed my DNS cache (instructions).

When you log in, it will ask you for your authenticator, after that, everytime you open up this application you are good to go and you dont need to log in again. Press "Play game" and you'll be in whatever game you want to be.
when i initially downloaded the client and logged in i was prompted for the authenticator code. that was like a week ago and i haven't been prompted for a code since (by the client or the individual games). is this normal? my account is setup to "Enter an authenticator code every time I type my credentials in a game client or the Battle.net desktop app". I've rebooted my PC several times and haven't been prompted for the authenticator code since the initial login.

Is the login bugging or is it just me?
