A year and a half after my mother's mother passed away from Alzheimer's Disease, I found out just a moment ago that my mother has breast cancer. She will be coming to the city that I am in now to get a full MRI and an assessment on the situation.
Other details:
- My mother smoked ever since I could remember. She quit when I went to China at the age of 19 for about a year. Then she found out I smoked and my sister smoked. I feel so bad for doing this. I think she started because me and my sister started.
- I smoked what I hope will be my last cigarette ever an hour ago. And I am trying my damnedest to quit.
- The doctors who diagnosed her think they caught her situation early.
- Because my father busted his ass in the military for 20-something years, I'm thinking we should have insurance to take care of her.
I lived a relatively sheltered and privileged life thanks to the hard work of my mother and father, and their discipline to me. When I turned 23, my father had a heart attack. He made a full recovery though. Upon hearing this, I will never again smoke another cigarette in my life.
As for my decision to go to Korea next semester... I don't know what will happen. It should be my final semester, and at the very least, I have to stay here, at a university far from home, to graduate.

I'm so sorry dude. I'm just sorry, I know it's just internet words, but I know what that feels like to have a family member with cancer, it's not fun to say the least. I wish you all the best, I hope that if they caught it early that she will make it out as well as she started. Make the changes to your life you need to, my cousin got Hotchkins Lymphoma and had to take a break from Law School this year, it happens, you will return once the ordeal is over, if you have to make a change to your life that is, like he did.

Sorry man cancer sucks, I know. Hope your mom pulls through just fine!

an hour ago, you found out your dad got a heart attack. then a moment ago, you found out your mom has cancer? (not trying to sound like a dick, just trying to understand what happened)

(not trying to sound like a dick, just trying to understand what happened) I think smoking is more notorious for cancer. My father had smoked until before I was born because the military had assigned him to morgue duty. He said he quit smoking then because he saw the black lungs of dead people that had autopsies.
P.S. I'm 24 now. I turned 24 yesterday.

Sorry to hear that bro. My father passed away in Feb after a long battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis. I know how hard it is to work with and help take care of ailing parents.
If you need/want any other insight, read my series of blogs about the situation. Here is the last one, it links back to the previous ones. I hope for the best for you and your family and feel free to PM me if you need anyone to chat with about your fears and emotions.

Good god, that's an incredibly insensitive post on a blog like this. Dreadful stuff.
OP - good luck mate, hope she gets the all clear in the near future after treatment.

I'll be rooting for your mom!

That said, I agree with you on this once considering the OP obviously knows how bad cigarettes are. Just know that TOP's comment still has an ounce of sense in it.

People say "It causes cancer" "It causes cancer" and people hear "it causes cancer" "It causes cancer" a bit like a cliche... but now I know it's real.
According to the doctors who did work on my father, however, his heart attack was caused by Cholesterol. He hasn't smoked for 24 years.

My uncle has cancer as well, just know that if you have faith, you can fight it!
Good luck, TL is rooting for you!

This almost identical situation happened to me while I was in high school(I'm also 24.) My grandma got diagnosed with Alzheimer's in Freshman year, died after two years(it did not go well, she went from a spitfire to a mental wreck in that time. By that I mean she was unhappy with herself, not that she lessened as a person.)
My mom got diagnosed with Cancer in early junior year; looking I back I don't even remember crying about it at all then. Kind of tells you how much it got to me, afterwards I got addicted to WoW for a year or so and my grades/social life/hygiene slipped like crazy. She's still a survivor, it's in complete remission now.
I don't know how this will help you, I just wanted to share. But at least you're more mature now than I was when I was 16, I'm sure you can handle it better than I did back then too. Be there for her, don't become distant like I did!

cancer is a bitch. hope your mom will be ok

The new wife of my dad had breast cancer recently. If that cheers you up, its actually 'easy' (easier) to treat than cancer at any other point in your system. Ofcourse its still a terrible sickness, but they can potentially remove one or both breasts and rebuild them at a later stage. Ofcourse its not nice, losing your breats as woman and hair, but the mortality rate is actually not that high, especially if caught early.
So, good luck to your mom, just don't lose your will, you can beat that cancer bitch
