A year and a half after my mother's mother passed away from Alzheimer's Disease, I found out just a moment ago that my mother has breast cancer. She will be coming to the city that I am in now to get a full MRI and an assessment on the situation.
Other details:
- My mother smoked ever since I could remember. She quit when I went to China at the age of 19 for about a year. Then she found out I smoked and my sister smoked. I feel so bad for doing this. I think she started because me and my sister started.
- I smoked what I hope will be my last cigarette ever an hour ago. And I am trying my damnedest to quit.
- The doctors who diagnosed her think they caught her situation early.
- Because my father busted his ass in the military for 20-something years, I'm thinking we should have insurance to take care of her.
I lived a relatively sheltered and privileged life thanks to the hard work of my mother and father, and their discipline to me. When I turned 23, my father had a heart attack. He made a full recovery though. Upon hearing this, I will never again smoke another cigarette in my life.
As for my decision to go to Korea next semester... I don't know what will happen. It should be my final semester, and at the very least, I have to stay here, at a university far from home, to graduate.

I'm so sorry dude. I'm just sorry, I know it's just internet words, but I know what that feels like to have a family member with cancer, it's not fun to say the least. I wish you all the best, I hope that if they caught it early that she will make it out as well as she started. Make the changes to your life you need to, my cousin got Hotchkins Lymphoma and had to take a break from Law School this year, it happens, you will return once the ordeal is over, if you have to make a change to your life that is, like he did.

an hour ago, you found out your dad got a heart attack. then a moment ago, you found out your mom has cancer? (not trying to sound like a dick, just trying to understand what happened)

(not trying to sound like a dick, just trying to understand what happened) I think smoking is more notorious for cancer. My father had smoked until before I was born because the military had assigned him to morgue duty. He said he quit smoking then because he saw the black lungs of dead people that had autopsies.
P.S. I'm 24 now. I turned 24 yesterday.

Sorry to hear that bro. My father passed away in Feb after a long battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis. I know how hard it is to work with and help take care of ailing parents.
If you need/want any other insight, read my series of blogs about the situation. Here is the last one, it links back to the previous ones. I hope for the best for you and your family and feel free to PM me if you need anyone to chat with about your fears and emotions.

Good god, that's an incredibly insensitive post on a blog like this. Dreadful stuff.
OP - good luck mate, hope she gets the all clear in the near future after treatment.

I'll be rooting for your mom!

That said, I agree with you on this once considering the OP obviously knows how bad cigarettes are. Just know that TOP's comment still has an ounce of sense in it.

People say "It causes cancer" "It causes cancer" and people hear "it causes cancer" "It causes cancer" a bit like a cliche... but now I know it's real.
According to the doctors who did work on my father, however, his heart attack was caused by Cholesterol. He hasn't smoked for 24 years.

My uncle has cancer as well, just know that if you have faith, you can fight it!
Good luck, TL is rooting for you!

This almost identical situation happened to me while I was in high school(I'm also 24.) My grandma got diagnosed with Alzheimer's in Freshman year, died after two years(it did not go well, she went from a spitfire to a mental wreck in that time. By that I mean she was unhappy with herself, not that she lessened as a person.)
My mom got diagnosed with Cancer in early junior year; looking I back I don't even remember crying about it at all then. Kind of tells you how much it got to me, afterwards I got addicted to WoW for a year or so and my grades/social life/hygiene slipped like crazy. She's still a survivor, it's in complete remission now.
I don't know how this will help you, I just wanted to share. But at least you're more mature now than I was when I was 16, I'm sure you can handle it better than I did back then too. Be there for her, don't become distant like I did!

cancer is a bitch. hope your mom will be ok

The new wife of my dad had breast cancer recently. If that cheers you up, its actually 'easy' (easier) to treat than cancer at any other point in your system. Ofcourse its still a terrible sickness, but they can potentially remove one or both breasts and rebuild them at a later stage. Ofcourse its not nice, losing your breats as woman and hair, but the mortality rate is actually not that high, especially if caught early.
So, good luck to your mom, just don't lose your will, you can beat that cancer bitch

My condolences. I hope it's benign and whatever treatment she gets, takes. Stay strong!

It will be ok. As you told, it was caught early. Breast Cancer has a high survival rate if caught early. Remember also that if you read something about 80% survival rate, usually the numbers are outdated, even if they are from 2005, the progress in this field is going fast. Not only they can cure more often, but also the treatment can be lighter than they used to be. Another positive note, once you have cancer and you are cured, you are followed closely and actually have less chance of dying from it. Just don't go read forums about this. My father had a Cancer, advanced state (4/5), with a very rare form. I went on forum to read and it was freaking gloomy. He made it. Anyway, the odds are with you! I know how scary it is, try to keep living normally. Go to Korea!

All the best. Hopefully the doctors were right and it was caught early.
|
My best wishes for your mother to recover quickly and hopefully see the cancer eradicated. I'm happy you are taking the first steps to cut out the causes of cancer like smoking in your life, and though it will be tough, all you need is the willpower and you can do it.
|
All the best. In a strange way it's actually lucky. Breast cancer, because it's been so devastating in the past, has had a huge amount of research and work done on it. It now has a reasonably good prognosis if caught early, so try not to kill yourself with worry. Odds are, everything will be challenging, but alright in the end.
I wish you both the best of luck, and strength of heart and mind for what's ahead.

Dont worry its very treatble and she will have most likely have projected life expectancy of 10 more years minimum. I'm a doctor and my mom had breast cancer 3 years ago. If you have any queries PM me. All the best,. Godbless.

My mother passed away from breast cancer last June, it's gonna be a rough ride for you and your family. When she was diagnosed she was given six months to live but survived for four years. Remember that even if you get the very worst news, there is always hope.
Stay strong, she needs you to be.

All the best, stay strong and support her all the way.

Keep strong my friend,I understand how hard life can be sometimes. My grandfather almost died from cancer. If you need emotional support don't hesitate to message me and we can chat or talk on skype or something.
Here is my blog that denotes some of my life's rough spots. Cheers and stay positive. http://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/viewblog.php?topic_id=411583

If it gets really bad, I advise lots of exercise, eating lots of fruits and veggies, and cutting losses and saying goodbye to the breast(s). You can't be too careful when it comes to you and your life, especially with something as painful and shitty as cancer.
I'm sure she'll make it! Stay strong!

Stay strong bro, the fact that they caught it early is a great sign. My mom got to it really late because she was too afraid to tell anyone and she had to get a masectomy and she is still undergoing treatments. Best of luck

Hi.
While it is true that smoking does cause cancer, it does not cause every cancer. Mainly the places where the actual cancer causing substances in the smoke touch your tissue. (mouth, throat, lungs)
Smoking is not considered a major risk for breast cancer, and overall, it may present no risk at all. But some studies have suggested that smoking may increase the risk of breast cancer in certain women. A study published in the November 18, 2002, issue of the British Journal of Cancer analyzed data from 53 epidemiological studies, including 58,515 women with breast cancer and 95,067 women who did not have breast cancer. It concluded that smoking had little or no independent effect on the incidence of breast cancer. But there appear to be some exceptions:
In short, the smoking probably had nothing to do with Breast cancer.
Also breast cancer is one of the most common and treatable kinds of cancer

My girlfriend had pancreas cancer, when she was 25 yrs old and she is fine now, they took care of her, they caught her at the early stage. Cancer doesn't mean it's the end, cheer up, it's gonna be okay

having cancer doesnt mean u will die. no worries. she can fight it no problem. its all in the mind.
|
I'm so sorry to hear about your mother's situation.
My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer a little over ten years ago. She went through significant surgery and a few difficult rounds of chemotherapy, and has gone through years of careful monitoring after the fact, but today she's in reasonably good health.
There's definitely reason to be hopeful, and staying positive can improve the likelihood of a good outcome, so hang in there.

This is bullshit. But you are right about the first part.

My mom had it as well a couple of years ago. I can't imagine how hard it has been, but she made it just fine.
I don't want to downplay the disease, it's certainly more than anyone should have to go through, but keep in mind that it's very much so treatable and certainly not lethal if diagnosed early.
If you want to have a laugh about it, there's a Southpark episode called "Breast Cancer Show Ever", wherein Cartman makes fun of it and gets the living crap beaten out of him to a Disturbed song. Very enjoyable!
