how are the EG contracts designed to allow EG to stop him playing in tournaments and not paying him salary for a month. Obviously their contracts have a article like "dont hurt your team with stupid comments" but it was a "private" chat. So they don´t giving him money that he deserves.
Is this a US thing because in the EU there is no way to get away with that on an employee contract. A lot of employees are bound by a creed of ethics on how they are to behave outside their profession. Take teaching professions. In some districts (different states in the US are divided up into different school districts, each district having their own curriculum, standards, and rules for both teachers and students) teachers can't be seen engaging in behavior that would hurt the schools image. This could mean public drinking, going to clubs, or having sex with students. This is easily enforced because when you want a job, you will most likely sign a contract. This contract, depending on the State, can be enforced easily or heavily. Since EG can easily be seen as a brand rather than an e-sports team, sponsorships mean everything to them. Another important thing to note is that EG is located in New Mexico, which I believe is a right to work state meaning that employers could fire you at will with little to no notice. But EG seems like a stand up employer, they pay their employees decent salaries and seem overly fair when it comes to situations such as this. I'm sure EG has a very simple publicity contract stating that players are not to engage in behavior that might hurt EGs image, such behaviors include racial remarks or sentiments, acts of violence, etc etc. This is pretty standard protocol for a lot of jobs that require public appearances and images. If you hurt your employers image because of your antics, they will punish/fine you. You're being pad to represent and promote EG, not to be awesome at starcraft which is just a side benefit. Many professions, such as lawyers, journalists, engineers, nurses, and doctors abide by a rule of ethical guidelines and indeed some of these professionals have their own committees that are known to expel people from practicing their profession. Think of disbarring lawyers from practicing law. Or terminating medical licenses for malfeasance and neglect. Many countries have committees such as these for different professions. I feel like Stephano's closer to be in a rock star work position than to be a teacher, but I might be biased ! or just look at Stephano as an athlete. One who endorses sponsors. Sponsors drop athletes all the time for idiotic comments.

this is rather disappointing, I hope stephano doesn't take this too hard

Remember those words were taken out of the context.... Stephano's NOT pedophile or gay or whatever .... he did never rape animals, little sisters, vegetables... WTF guys he was just trolling around ... something YOU don't understand ... in "land of freedom"... The "it was just a joke folks" on the other hand fail to understand that he is a representing a company and whether EG management or even a significant majority of americans understands and appreciates the "joke" is irrelevant if it can still cause reputational damage due to sponsors being less interested in sponsoring teams or even sc2 as a whole if its flagship players are known for such juvenile and divisive humor Even professional NFL players can get suspended for eg racial slurs. A public figure in a company who behaves poorly in his private life can be fired if that private life somehow becomes publicly known. In other words, you and Stephano ought to both grow up I'm not specially talking about the company. I'm talking about the private nature of those words. I'm talking about people who can imagine Stephano as a pedophile after this (i guess ) bad joke...this is ridiculous. That was a PRIVATE joke taken out of his context ...
Joke's are supposed to be funny. This is not good for the scene, it's not good for Stephano, it's not good for EG. This happens far too often with him and EG understands it has to stop. So what do they do? Hit him where it hurts, his wallet and his popularity.
It's not about being a badass, it's about having taste. No one's saying Stephano's a pussy if he comes out and apologizes, and no one's calling french people pussies if they don't make joke's about raping children. It's not about whether or not he's a pedophile, it's about how these comments undermine his integrity. How are people supposed to respect and give him credibility if this is the kind of behaviour he portrays?
And it is business. Everything people tie to Stephano they tie to EG. If they think Stephano is a pedophile and EG does nothing, then logically EG condones his behaviour. That's not good for business. It became business the second it went public and by the coinciding fact that Stephano is contracted to EG. To say otherwise is either willful ignorance or stupidity.
If EG didn't do anything about this I would hope the community would. Just as it is damaging to EG it is damaging to our game. I know he was probably joking, or that maybe he didn't rape a 14 year old. It doesn't matter. The possibility, and the fact that he joked about it is damaging to our game. Just like Destiny's whole drama this is damaging to everyone associated with Stephano, to TL, to Twitch, to any video game trying to legitimize itself in the eyes of the general public.
We can't just excuse this kind of behaviour. When this happens the players need to know it's unacceptable, and the other organizations in the sport have to demonstrate that it's unacceptable. Destiny got kicked off his team, had his stream unfeatured and other public backlash. By comparison, Stephano got a slap on the wrist.

Now i am definitely in the "it was just a joke" camp, but i do realise that he is representing a company that is in need of sponsors. So what do the sponsors want? Do you really think they like this case blown up on the frontpage of teamliquid, and things getting blown out of proportion? I am pretty sure they would not want any of that. Infact I think they wish this had just stayed on some sub-forum of reddit, where only 1 % of the community would ever get to see that chat.
It might be that EG did it for the sponsors. But no matter what camp you are in, this is a class-study of failed damage control. No matter what EG does now, one side thinks that their star player is a pedhofile rapist (its funny even writing this in this context!) and the other side thinks EG is retarded for overreacting to a teenagers juvenile joke told to his friend. Its lose-lose for EG.
It just hit. thats properly why its on the frontpage of teamliquid! (TL_Stephano anyone?)

Someone posted earlier that it's normal and nothin unnsual for 19 y.o to do sexy time with 14 year old kid. Man what the fuck. Where u guys were growing up. It's huge difference when u are still somewhat young, and 5 years is a HUGE difference. If Stephano was 29 and this girl 24, then ofc no problem. But this? You guys are fuckin sick.
Also now he is trying to turn this into a joke. U can clearly see that this wasnt a joke when u look on the chat and his friends reaction when he actually was serious.
What do you mean? When a girl can have children, thats when shes ready for sex. Thats how it always have been in nature.
Then we made laws, and we should foloow the law. But your morals are way off.

seems like a pretty big overreaction. i mean how PC are EG trying to be here? are they gonna suspend their players for every 'harsh' comment now? their players say stupid shit all the time. why draw the line here? really stupid imo

I am truly appalled by these digusting comments.
Troll or not, they are highly inappropriate to say the least, and my respect for Stephano have plumited to none at all. Why would anyone say something like that? How is this funny (assuming he didn't actually commit a crime)? Do you have no decency at all, Stephano? Your apology doesn't even begin to mend the damage you have done to your reputation, and frankly it doesn't seem heartfelt or adequate at all.
EG's response to this is appropriate and should be an example for other teams to follow. I even think there should be further consequences by extending the ban trough the remainder of 2012. In my opinion Twitch.tv should freeze his account for the same period as well.
One of the tings i love about the SC2 community is the general requirement of good spotsmanship and manners, and i believe behavior as reprehensible as this needs to be severely punished.

thats the thing, a private chat are different from the public. While I agree that a punishment was in order, I think 1 month was too much as it happened in a private chat etc etc.
But who cares, doubt it will damage Stephano or EG in any way. With our without the punishment. ~~

But it didn't happen in a private chat. Sure, it was intended to be a private conversation, but seeing as it was streamed and ended up coming out to the whole world, it's anything but a private conversation anymore.

I don't understand how this thread is still going on.
This happens every time there's drama like this, and someone emails the sponsors - everyone debates ad infinitum about if what was said was inappropriate, what language actually means, if someone is or isn't actually a bad guy. What nobody seems to get is it doesn't matter what you think. What matters is the sponsors were emailed and likely threatened to pull support - and as a result the player has to be punished.
While this sucks, and especially sucks in this case when the player in question is one of the best players in the world, you cannot control everyone who watches Stephano's stream. You cannot control the people who will see the screenshots and get offended. You cannot prevent assholes who don't even care about Starcraft from emailing sponsors just to harm others. Arguing if what Stephano did was right or wrong is a waste of time, because no matter how dumb the situation, he will be punished once sponsors get involved.
What you can do with your time spent pontificating here is email sponsors yourself and tell them you appreciate their support because you really enjoy watching tournaments, leagues, etc.

I completely agree with your statement, though comparison between Stephano and Destiny is a bit stretched. Destiny had a history of such stunts while Stephano, apart from wasting himself on Dreamhack, forfeiting some tournaments have not said/done? shit of such caliber up to date.

for a community that frequently uses rape with zero regard to anything passed it's intent in context, it's pretty sad how hypocritical the majority are. obviously professionalism is a priority, so maybe this was the right decision by EG. However, it doesn't excuse the community.

So, why did you put "gay" in your sentence ? Is it anywhere near like being a pedophile ?
