Oh give me a fucking break, get off your moral high horse. If half the internet warriors had some friends in high school people joke like this all the time. You don't joke with your buddies? The internet warrior machine aka reddit just needs something to "fight" about.

Well, he's going to Korea anyway. I don't know who you hang out with, but people don't "joke" about having sex with 14 year olds. I know plenty of people who make jokes about having sex with people's sisters (that are around 13-14). It's funny stuff to say to some close friends and what not, a bit weird when you're on the internet and are a sponsored player. No, it's not "a bit weird" You know plenty of people that joke about having sex with people's under-aged sisters? If I had a sister that was 14 and my best friend made a joke about raping her I'd punch him in the face and never talk to him again.
I agree that the rape part is completely over the line and and alone justify the the punishment. Raping is different than having sex but I don't see how a joke about sex with consent totally devoid of meaning whatsoever, that is similar to some sort of mother type of joke made by a good friend would make me want to stop talking to him.

People that are celebrities really needs to understand what it means to be well known sometimes. That stuff like this just bites you in the ass. I can understand that players doesn't want stuff to come out in public and I'm not a fanboy of any players out there. For me they are just a player like myself but i can understand them sometimes but if you get caught doing this it's ur own fault.
I didn't know you listen to private conversations between celebrities. It's obvious stephano didn't even realise it was a public conversation and joking between friends is perfectly fine. Any "public figure" can talk shit to a friend.

i thought it was something terrible he said in a public interview....
not some random msg between friends.
So unlucky for Stephano.

People get very sensitive about a 14yo having sex but it happens all the time, all over the world.

he NEVER talk about rape OMG.
ABUSE in french does NOT MEAN rape...

I do hope eg reacts to please their sponsors, because stephano does not deserve that for a poor private joke come on.. this is silly

LOL to the people who think whatever Stephano said was not public because it was a private chat that happened to be streamed at the time. You say something on the internet, then it is public whether you like it or not because it is on record. Yeah, I too joke about things that are inappropriate, but I do it only in real life face to face among friends, never on the internet even among closest friends. I don't know why people think anything is private on the internet...maybe online banking and stuffs are, but not any form of chat...

A joke between two friends ends up in a month of ban. No matter how hard the joke is, it's still a joke. eSports will end up killing the personality of players if goes this way.

tbh, me and my friends are making this kind of jokes quite often, about the sisters and the moms.. Tho it wouldnt be funny if one of them was actually raped tho Im not saying that the jokes are tastefull... but joking around with friends and saying the most retarded shit is fun, because EVERYONE knows it's bullshit.. and bullshit is fun.. I just can't believe how much people over here are just acting so hypocritical..

Joke, trolling, etc or not. Pedophilia is not something that should be accepted or be that amusing in any community.
If E-Sports wants to continue to grow their needs to be a little more thought process by the players in the public eye. A lot of people get mad at this statement, because that's why people love this community, its fairly uncensored and fun, but outside of starcraft in the professional world behavior like this is very unacceptable. If stupid shit like this snuck onto the USA today or CNN or a big news provider, the rest of the world would lose respect for our community, and its not due to the lack of humor you idiots or even them not understanding who stephano/bling or the context it was in, but because it bring a very disturbing issue in this world.
The ban itself is proper, I would even go as far as maybe banning him a tiny bit longer. Maybe another half a month. Not one to have people made examples of, but this is one of those situation where that fence got crossed a little in the public eye.
The apology statement honestly looks like total shit and something that was written or scripted by EG, but I think that goes with out saying for most other public apologies that we around the world see when faces of community fuck up. I'm sure EG has media people for that stuff
Doesn't reflect my view on EG, it's sponsors, or the games community itself. We as a community sorta look a little shitty that this slipped out and that there's some holy rebels in the community who defend what stepahno said based off them looking in only the view of stephano or bling and not what kind of image it gives our community.
|
Stephano clearly doesn't mean his apology. EG has obviously forced it upon him which makes it completely pointless. People have to stop taking all these things so damn seriously. Total outrage and a month ban over a private joke? If people are so fucking angry, where's the call for action on Bling for finding it so funny?
|
You all do realize that if any professional athlete made this joke (which I'm not entirely convinced it was, but that's unimportant) they'd probably face a fairly similar punishment?
And while I realize this was supposed to be a private conversation, when there's a chance your private conversation could be broadcast to 1k + people you should probably check before saying something like that. Maybe that's unfortunate, but that's just how it goes in today's media world.
Finally, there's a place in between being a faceless computer game playing machine and dude who jokes about fucking 14 year olds, I'm sure Stephano can find that and still be perfectly entertaining.
A lot of the posts here are sort of confusing to me. Most people would be in trouble if they were caught making jokes about "abusing" a 14yo, regardless of their job or where that conversation was seen/heard.

When you hire a player like stephano you know he WILL do stuff like that, stephano is a real buzzmaker and he enjoys it. Millenium had to face those kind of situation and even worse a lot and they didn't go apeshit for it. Seriously EG i'm dissapointed. EG (read as: sponsors) are paying him out the ass to perform on a world stage in front of tens of thousands. Shenanigans will only be tolerated so far. No one with good sense can imagine a situation where making a joke which can easily be interpreted as a confession of raping an underaged girl in a public setting while representing your employer will be brushed off. With income comes responsibility. If he doesn't act responsibly, he shouldn't be rewarded with income. Bravo EG. Him casually trolling on a convo that happened to be streamed has nothing to do with his ability to perform on world stage, or even represent his sponsors. It just incites the worst of our community. That's utter bullshit. He is one of the highest salaried players in all of esports because tech companies are willing to throw money at an organisation that will provide exposure to their brands. EG.Stephano.RC is a manifestation of their investment. He choose to join EG for the nearly unparalleled opportunities they can provide. But with that comes the responsibility to not pull stupid shit like this. He is in a position to be constantly scrutinized. He can ether retreat from the public eye as much as possible and let his games be his promotion or he can act clean enough to keep the pay train chugging. His choice.
Yeah except the people he's promoting to for the most part don't really care how eccentric his personality is.

The joke was in poor taste (it simply wasn't funny, no matter how you look at it) and just bad for image of the team. EG made the right decision in suspending Stephano, and duration of suspension is fair as well.

Well, he's going to Korea anyway. Jokes are usually followed up with a "haha just kiddin" or "I'm just playin man lol." Not a "Fuck, I hope you didn't show that to everyone on the stream"
I agree with you.
If someone makes a terrible joke, and leaves it as a joke, then I would be fine.
If they were worried that the public sees it, then I think that it is a problem.

These things are the reason why sports suck, pro players have to be so careful they might as well show no personality. It used to be the case that even the higher profile players could just post on the forums and be themselves, and while I won't defend the typical immature attitude that comes with it, now that's almost no longer the case: instead they are the stars and they have to be managed while we cheer for them and are far removed from them. I had hoped that we wouldn't go down this path when e-sports became bigger, that we would keep the kind of atmosphere where Stephano can say a dumb private joke without almost being run out of the community because of 'hurting e-sports'.
Dude really? If your a public figure you must understand the rules if you don't you shouldn't of choice that path. That's just how it is in this world like it or not. I can TOTALLY understand the situation and when you tell someone in private jokes.. But you must be careful really. Cause you can't just go around saying stuff like that and just think its ok.
As i said before if i saw that on the stream i wouldn't be the one posting it on tl.net or anywhere i would of just moved on and thought that Stephano has a weird humour.

Don't get me wrong, Stephano doesn't have a leg to stand on here, but those of you pulling the "How sick are you?" card have really got to take their head out of the hole they've got it stuck in and realize that you can joke about a lot of sad and unfortunate things and not be a monster. The problem in this case is the status of the utterance as a joke in the first place. Every stand-up or situational comedy, by virtue of their respective genre, comes with certain expectations from the audience. In this case, it being a casual conversation between two friends, one that Stephano believed was not being streamed, made it seem like he very well might have had sex with a minor. And that's not as funny as a good dirty joke.

Do you really think that going to a comedy show- a place where you purposely suspend your level of ethics and acknowledge that the comedian is going to appeal to certain types of jokes to get laughs- is anything like a pro-gamer posting a single, seemingly private, rape confession to a friend?
I assume Stephano's trolling, but I'm also quite glad that he was immediately punished for such a stupid thing. A comedian obviously wouldn't be removed from the stage for making a similar joke.
