You definitely can do this--I use RLM, but immediately upon warping units in or grabbing them from rally, I add them to two CGs; first to the main army (Ctrl-S) and then to a microable subgroup; Ctrl-3 for short range (zealots, DTs, & archons), Ctrl-4 for stalkers, Ctrl-D for templar, and Ctrl-2 for basically everything else (colossi, immortals, voids). I'm not good enough to use phoenixes so I haven't really worked them into this system.
So like you say, this is useful for micro using 2/3/4/D while still having a group for large scale orchestrations, either for staging or as an oshit button.

So the control groups p and o in TRM, for example, become control groups [ and p in TSM.

Just press ALT to find the unit that is currently selected and then deselect the unit, building or asset by pressing SHIFT and clicking it. Now you can set your layered cameras.
The trick is to have nothing selected because ALT always centers on selected stuff.

This is over complicating things. you do not have to deselect anything.
1. Press and hold ALT. (it will at first center on current location) 2. Click desired location on the mini map. 3. Tap the desired camera location hot key (Repeat step 2 and 3 until all camera locations are set) 4. Release ALT

Salomonster's got the faster way, I'd go with that one

Yup... if you're not doing it this way then you're doing it wrong. One thing to add: If you hold down your mouse after clicking on the minimap, you can adjust your camera to accurately get it right where you want it.

If all (should) do it this way is "center camera on selection" on alt still needed?
- The only cases I can think of are for warpin cams, chrono cams and the first base.
- I don't want "center camera on selection" if I enable autocast with the hot key (alt + ability hotkey). - (I'm not so familiar with zerg but) I think when you create or add to the queen cg you don't want "center camera on selection".
what do you think? Did I forgot a case?

The nice thing about having center on selection on alt is that it saves you quite a bit of time of trying to get a base centered just right, but I do agree that it makes certain things annoying as zerg.
I guess if I played zerg I would bind "center on selection" to middle mouse button. No one should be using middle mouse button to drag their camera anyway.

Actually, as far as queens go, we will be changing the layered control group.
For JIOP versions:
Recall = Shift+P (same) Add = Ctrl+J Create = Ctrl+Shift+J
this is much faster and more ergonomic. Feel free to make changes to your own version until we can get the next update out on the skydrive :D
Thanks

Oh great! I've been struggling to find a comfortable way for adding to and creating the injecting queen hot key group. This seems really nice, will try it out as soon as I get some time to play. (guess I'll be back with a review in 2014 or something)

any other changes?

@maLaK1 We also moved the "halt" command to avoid conflicts. Should have 0.5.1 uploaded to the skydrive soon.

I've been playing with core since 0.3. I think the one consideration that should have been emphasized more in development is that it is possible that the most efficient (minimal travel) layout can lead to higher incidence of error.
I don't play Terran but others have mentioned accidentally lifting off all command centers. I do play Protoss and I frequently cast accidental force fields instead of storm.
I know these problems lessen with practice but since these can be game losing errors I'd rather give up some efficiency for robustness.
I think in my particular case I will experiment with changing up some of the spells so they aren't overlapping and moving some really uncommon ones further away e.g. hallucinate or vortex

At the worst its a trade off between Type-time (time it takes to hit the key) and typing error rate.
Type time is something you will never get back, but error rate is something you Can fix.
I don't think this layout increases Error rate except for those few games it takes to learn it in the first place.
If you have a high error rate and you attribute it to the keylayout this may fix errors since, some errors can be attributed to moving your hands away from its "core" position (to hit out of core positions keys) and not correctly repositioning it quickly and correctly.
So I believe this should fix a lot of errors we make instead of increasing them.

I can't decide between ZRM and ZRS
i've played both layouts a lot now and I'm very comfortable with both but I dont know which one is more efficient
the main differences for me are ZRS feels more compact and faster but all keys feel very tightly packed into one area, hitting CTRL+SHIFT is easier on ZRS but building units and the rest is better on ZRM because the keys on ZRS feel too close together
so with ZRM i have a bit more space for my fingers and it feels more comfortable any advice? at the moment im switching between both relatively often

Not related to TheCore, but maybe useful to the developers (although I guess they knew it already).
I just found out that by editing the hotkey file in the disk, it's possible to assign conflicting hotkeys. For example, it's possible to assign the same key to attack and to produce SCV. This would be impossible in the editor because the Planetary Fortress (PF) also has the attack command.
However using this setting and pressing the conflicting key results in the PF producing the SCV, not in attacking. This makes it usable, and because you are never going to attack-move the PF there are no major drawbacks in doing this.
Also, you can assign CTRL+A to attack (not that I would want to do that), and other great stuff that would not be possible to do with the software.
I guess it could be useful to assign "dangerous" commands such as Lift, Salvage, Templar's Merge and Baneling's Explode to a CTRL+whatever combination.
