I hope you guys are all doing good! This will be my fourth blog-entry, and I must say, I am taking a liking to it. It may not mean much, but over 400 views does mean a lot to me. It's not a huge number, but if we would all the people who clicked it (and hopefully read it) in a room, we would have ourselfs a crowded area don't you think. So, thank you very much for that, makes me feel good and also makes me want to write some more.
So, here we go.
Have you noticed it too?
As you all know, universities and such are usually located somewhere in the middle of a city. So is mine, Rotterdam to be precise. Now, walking around in a city always gives me a feeling of joy. Coming from the countryside, I'm not used to seeing so many different people who are almost all strangers. Not just to me, but to eachother too. And, lets be honest for a second, even though we say we don't, and we will never admit it nor say it out loud, we judge people on their looks and behaviour. It only takes a second to put someone in their frame and decide wether he/she looks good, has a nice personality etc. We form images in our head of what those people are most probably like by looking for reference in our experiences. Now, walking around in Rotterdam I noticed something. Over 40% of the people I see could lose a few/a lot pounds/kilo's. People get overweight. I don't really care about that, but what I do care about is the following.
I'm not the only one who noticed people tend to get heavier now a days. The media caught wind of it, the government knows it, scientists know it and most importantly the people who own gyms noticed it. Now, the media wouldnt me the media if they wouldn't push it in our face so hard we just have to see it too. And they judge. And when I say they judge, I don't mean they judge like most of us do. No, they scream it out loud in every possible way. People see this, notice what is said about people who are overweight and get the idea in their head that they have to lose weight (ofcourse this is not the only reason, but for the purpose of the story it is an important one). Now, like I said before, the people who own gyms noticed this too. And they acted upon it. Now we are getting to what I wrote this whole thing for. I'm getting so annoyed by the advertising done on the street by them. Not just one, not today I was on the subway, and at one point I saw 6 different gym advertisements for 6 different gyms. It gets shoved up in your face. Being curious as I am, I decided to look for some numbers about advertising and I got scared. On average, we see over 550 ads per day. That's a huge number right?
Lucky for us, there is something built in the human mind. We have the possibility to filter things out of our field of vision. When I say vision, I ofcourse mean things we see and be concious of it. I'll give you an example:
Imagine you live in a street that gets a new billboard. Now the first day, you notice it. 'O, look at that, there's a new *********'. So, next day, you see it,but you don't pay attention to it. Chances are, that the third or fourth time you go past it, you don't even notice it anymore. And thank god for that right? Now, they do have some tricks ofcourse, e.g. using bright colours in the advertisement. Long story short, ladies and gentlemen we live in a world of advertising and I'm not sure about wheter I like it or not. What do you think about that?
I wanted to talk about Starcraft too today, but I really can't think of anything. As you know, being bronze I have a lot to work on, and I won't bore you with any stories on how that is going, because it is nothing new for you all. You have all been there and done it. Ofcourse, tips are always welcome (besides work on droning, economy, injects, scouting). Or when you don't agree with what I write, let me know to, I love discussions.
Thanks for reading again!
Kindest regards,
Thomas
PS: as the first comment pointed out, the title might not suit this all to well. I'm sorry for that, but it seems I can't change it anymore.
