KartRider is a racing game that is very popular in Korea. Seasonal tournaments are held much in the same way that they are for Starcraft, attracting big crowds and having large prize pools.
A few years ago, Nexon attempted to bring KartRider to the North American scene. Unfortunately, shortly after the beta finished the project was scrapped. Many of the people who enjoyed the game migrated to the foreign servers, namely the Korean and Chinese versions. The Korean server is the most up-to-date version there is, and is the site of all of the new content. That is the reason I choose to play on this server.
Nexon recently changed their account registration policy to no longer require a KSSN upon registration. This allows people who previously couldn't play on the Korean server to now be able to. Please note though, without registering a KSSN on your account there are some restrictions. Such as, not being able to purchase NX Cash (Not 100% sure on this, but someone told me this) and having the same restrictions that a person who is 16 years of age or younger would have, according to Korean law. (Not being able to play from 12AM - 6AM KST)
Edit: As of 10/08/2012, you now require a KSSN to be able to log into KartRider again.
The registration page for a Nexon Korea account is: https://member.nexon.com/join/join.aspx?accesscode=139
I have a large amount of in-game currency (Lucci), so if you need a kart to get you started, let me know and I will gift you one

That's great news! I really wish companies understood how to step it up and properly advertise this game.
Highly recommend - honestly don't let the look of the game fool you. It's incredible fun.

i remember playing this game when it was released for NA, but they took it down was really fun though
|
wow this is pretty awesome, I remember playing on nexon, had like 3 finger rainbow glove or was it the black glove, the one that comes after lol. Was pretty fun doing mirror drifts everywhere. ^__^
|
I played in the beta also :D though I was really bad at drifting. They didn't have the higher karts available though so I just no-drifted/gripped the races back then.
|
You guys should play again ^_^
|
Is it actually possible to be competitive without drifting? I'm actually considering to register to play in my free time but my wrist is starting to hurt and I don't want to play another game that requires like 200 apm.
|
This looks fun! Is the game free to play? I'm trying to create an account, but unfortunately I don't know any Korean... I'm having some trouble registering!
|
I've been playing for a while on the Taiwan server actually... you don't need a KSSN to sign up now? Hmm, maybe I'll try... how does KST convert again?
|

From EDT->KST is easy, it's just +1 hour and then switch the AM/PM. If it's 12:00PM in EDT, it's 1:00AM in KST. (You can also see the KST time at the top right of the TL website)

Yep, it's free to play. Nexon makes money via micro-transactions for different characters/karts.
Which part are you having trouble on? I can help you out if you need it

There is another mode called "Item" where it's more like conventional Mario Kart. You pick up boxes along the track and use the items to attack your opponents/defend yourself. In that mode you don't gain N2O for drifting, so you don't need to worry about it With the new karts these days, though, not drifting in speed mode will be near impossible to be competitive.

So I was able to sign up for a nexon.com account and download the client, but attempting to play still brings up an identity verification page (or at least, that's what I've been able to guess from Google Translate) and I don't know where to go from there. Can anyone help?

You can try and use Nexon Plug to run the game aswell: http://help.nexon.com/help/page/nx.aspx?url=download/plug Instead of starting the game via the website you can do it from within Nexon Plug

Clicking on the button gets me this:
And clicking on any of those asks me for a KSSN or some ID thing that also apparently requires one.

Ah yep I just registered a new account to try it. You have to set a kssn if you try and launch it from the website.
Playing via nexon plug doesn't require one though, so download that

Ah, no need for a KSSN to play on KR now, awesome.
I'll probably pick this up when I get back home from Korea.

It doesn't seem to work in Firefox though... also, is there any English reference for all the (many!) features that have been added since the ill-fated NA server? I was just starting to figure out the TW features, and now this...
