Preamble: This isn't a review. It doesn't contain critical analysis, just the subjective opinions of one person. The intent is to remember the games I've come across in my life and share the nostalgia, nothing more. And some of those games I didn't play in great depth
Metal Slug
Developer: Nazca Platform: Neo Geo Arcade Platform Release Year: 1996 Stephen's Rating: 5/10
Metal Slug is a side scrolling platform action game.
Basic Plot
You take on the role of an elite solider (or pair of soldiers in multiplayer) looking to overthrow a military coup and the creation of a New World Order.
Gunfire, example of the graphics.
Gameplay
Unlike other platform games, Metal Slug requires battling a constant stream of enemies from the beginning to the end of each level (where the player fights a boss). The screen scrolls forward at a set pace and the player is forced to keep up with that pace.
EDIT: The screen doesn't scroll forward at a set pace, it moves forward as you move your character but cannot move backwards (like Mario). There are certain sections of the game(s) where the screen is moving constantly but not all the time. (Thanks nesteaplunger).
Enemies did not hurt the player by touching him, but most had a melee attack. The player characters also had a knife for melee engagements. There were power-ups for weapons throughout the game as well as a "tank" which one player could get inside.
Many scenery elements were destructible and often held secret items.
The game had a 2 player co-operative play on the same machine which was a drawcard.
Positives
Good artwork. The game was overall satisfying to play.
Negatives
The only real negative that it was an arcade game and we had to pay for each game.
Memorable Moments
One time we were at Wizard's arcade in Blenheim and the Metal Slug game ate our coin up. The owner came along and opened the machine up and gave us unlimited games as a kind of reimbursement. We went ahead and completed the game, it was a lot of fun.

This was my favorite game in the arcades. I spent so many days hunting down an arcade that even had it. I'm so happy that there's a blog about it!

Metal Slug 2 is probably my favourite arcade game of my entire childhood. I remember I used to play it so much that I new all the secret stuff. Wow... I really miss playing it. It's a real classic.

Ahha, I loved this series in the arcade. All the memories with my friends and I trying to finish the game with only 1-2 credits (rarely happened, lol).
I knew the in and outs of levels 1~3 in metal slug 2. :<
EDIT: This game with Brood War, none of us knew any English, so we never understood what the annoucer said. Heavy Machine Gun (H) sounded like animashinga back then. Only Shotgun and Laser were obvious. :<

They released a "Metal Slug Anthology" for the PSP that has basically all 5 or 6 Metal Slugs ever released. You could also get the console versions on PS1 or PS2 so you don't have to waste all them quarters.
A minor thing about the OP...the screen does not scroll on its own. It works like the original Mario where you can't back track once you've passed it but you progress at your own pace. There are some areas where the screen does move on its own though such as when you're trying to escape or something.
Anyways...great game. Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys 2D scrollers. The game is really challenging if you don't have infinite continues.

It has been a while since I played it I'll edit my original post.
